What are the strengths and weaknesses of artificial neural networks?

I understand that ANNs are extremely useful in searching for patterns, but I've also heard that ANNs aren't too good at approximating convoluted mathematics. The argument was suggested it is difficult to express such relationships in a graph structure. I'm not sure if it's true, but I ask generally.
