Having suffered through a period of stagnation, artificial intelligence (AI) is now reaching a point of super human ability. For an industry looking to take human drivers out of the loop, this is welcome news. It has taken quite some time to reach this point however, with innovation dwindling during a number of'AI winters' over the last 60 years or so. Despite periodic interest in AI, a significant milestone was reached in 2012, observes Continental's Demetrio Aiello, who heads up the supplier's Artificial Intelligence & Robotics Labs.
