This DJI Phantom 3 drone hit a Quebec woman in the head
That's exactly what happened to 38-year-old Stรฉphanie Creignou, who unfortunately suffered injuries when the drone fell from the sky and crashed directly into her head. She's yet to get back to work, and as a result of her injuries, she was forced to cancel a vacation she had already planned with her husband. You can see it in the video footage captured by VTOL-X Drones, a professional drone provider that was, in an ironic turn of events, hired by event organizers to obtain aerial footage of the event. Drone operator Rosaire Turcotte is unsure of how he lost control of the drone or how the incident occurred. In an interview with VAT News, he attests that he has "zero explanation" and believes he "acted in the safest way possible."
First successful ship-to-shore drone delivery takes place in New Jersey
A drone successfully delivered medical supplies to the New Jersey coastline straight from the deck of a ship, marking the first ship-to-shore delivery in the US. The flight was designed to test whether drones could be used to carry human medical supplies to and from areas that cannot be access during major storms, earthquakes or other disasters. The test was run by disaster preparedness non-profit Field Innovation Team. Drone-firm Flirtey, which managed the first land-based drone delivery of medical supplies to a rural health clinic in July 2015, flew medical samples to Camp May in partnership with Dr Timothy Amukele, assistant professor of pathology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. While drones have already been muted as one way to deliver goods, such as Amazon's Air Prime drones, Amukele said that biological samples "are not like a shoe or a book, they are pretty fragile items".
Watch The First-Ever Drone Delivery From Ship To Land
It was a much a technological demonstration as it was a trial run for the future. Yesterday, a small hexacopter collected medical samples from people on the land, flew to its home ship, and then returned to shore, carrying medicine. Operated by drone delivery service Flirtey, the promise is better medicine after coastal tragedies. First, though, the drones have to get from shore to ship. And then from ship to shore (or floating shore-like stand-in).
Don't Look Now But The Chroma 4K Camera Drone May Be Following You
As the video shows, while the Follow Me mode is not perfect, it is very impressive. How long before everyone has a drone following them around, recording everything they do, in rock steady 4K video? At 700, this drone is still out of the price range of the casual consumer but we are already seeing these high end features make their way onto lower cost drones.
How to Build a Neuron: Exploring AI in JavaScript Pt 1 -- JavaScript Scene
Years ago, I was working on a project that needed to be adaptive. Essentially, the software needed to learn and get better at a frequently repeated task over time. I'd read about neural networks and some early success people had achieved with them, so I decided to try it out myself. That marked the beginning of a life-long fascination with AI. AI is a really big deal.
The future of technology is folding: From pocket drones to backpack scooters, DailyMail.com tries out the gadgets vying to become this year's Christmas must-haves
The future is folding, if the exhibits at a major New York tech exhibition are to be believed. Pocket size drones, 3D printers, phone accessories and cutting-edge wearables all took center stage at CE Week, which kicks off today. CE Week is designed to showcase products and services set to launch in the second half of 2016, which all focus around the world of technology. 'This is the year that a new ecosystem of products that communicate with other products, immersive entertainment systems and emerging technologies will really begin to take hold,' said Eric Schwartz, executive producer, CE Week. 'CE Week is a way for those most passionate about technology to see the future, now.' 'New York City, with its burgeoning finance, media and high tech industries provides a great backdrop.'
New Application for Drones: Disaster Relief
Flirtey's flight was a first on U.S. soil, but it doesn't necessarily mean the company now has free reign of the skies. Unrestricted drone-operated delivery of any kind in the U.S. โ be it humanitarian relief or postal delivery โ is still obstructed by layers of legislative red tape. And although Flirtey has received approval in the past for big-name events like these, experts tend to believe practical commercial drone delivery in any capacity is still a ways off.
Agency hopes apps will keep drones away from wildfires
FILE - In this July 2, 2015, file photo, Peter Koerber, a pilot and air tactical officer with the U.S. Forest Service, talks about the hazards of flying drones over wildfire areas during a news conference in Redding, Calif. The U.S. Department of the Interior says it's working with drone makers and mapping companies to create a system allowing smartphones to quickly update no-fly zones at wildfires.
Laser vs. drone swarms
Drones may be fantastic as a consumer hobby, but these small unmanned aerial vehicles pose a significant security threat when they fall into the wrong hands. One weaponized drone is bad enough, but drone swarms are a security nightmare for military officials. Drones, whether alone or in groups, are difficult to spot when approaching, tough to follow on radar, and cannot be easily shot down using conventional weapons. To combat this potential threat, Lockheed Martin is developing a laser-based weapon that'll blow such drones out of the sky. Traditional military protocol relies on the use of missiles and guns fired from the ground or from ships or vehicle platforms.
Chinese-Made Drone Crashes In Pakistan
Last weekend, a drone flown by Pakistan's air force crashed just shy of four miles from an airbase in the Punjab. The drone appears to have been a Chinese-made Wing Loong. The drone, also known as the Pterodactyl, serves with the Chinese military, as well as that of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Until this crash, Pakistan was not a known operator of the Wing Loong. The drone resembles America's iconic Predator drone, and like how the Predator begat the Reaper, there's likely an improved version in the works, which might be what Pakistan is really after.
