WAVE-DETR Multi-Modal Visible and Acoustic Real-Life Drone Detector

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We introduce a multi-modal WAVE-DETR drone detector combining visible RGB and acoustic signals for robust real-life UAV object detection. Our approach fuses visual and acoustic features in a unified object detector model relying on the Deformable DETR and Wav2Vec2 architectures, achieving strong performance under challenging environmental conditions. Our work leverage the existing Drone-vs-Bird dataset and the newly generated ARDrone dataset containing more than 7,500 synchronized images and audio segments. We show how the acoustic information is used to improve the performance of the Deformable DETR object detector on the real ARDrone dataset. We developed, trained and tested four different fusion configurations based on a gated mechanism, linear layer, MLP and cross attention. The Wav2Vec2 acoustic embeddings are fused with the multi resolution feature mappings of the Deformable DETR and enhance the object detection performance over all drones dimensions. The best performer is the gated fusion approach, which improves the mAP of the Deformable DETR object detector on our in-distribution and out-of-distribution ARDrone datasets by 11.1% to 15.3% for small drones across all IoU thresholds between 0.5 and 0.9. The mAP scores for medium and large drones are also enhanced, with overall gains across all drone sizes ranging from 3.27% to 5.84%.

Ukraine targets key Russian oil refinery as Moscow tests hypersonic missile

How is Russia replenishing its military? What is a'coalition of the willing'? How China forgot promises and'debts' to Ukraine How are Europe, the US pulling apart on Ukraine? Russia and Ukraine have been engaging in major aerial battles, targeting energy and transportation infrastructure, as Moscow presses its fierce ground assault in the Ukrainian east in the war's fourth year and tests a type of hypersonic weapon. Russia's Ministry of Defence announced on Sunday that its air defences shot down 361 drones, four guided aerial bombs, and rockets from a US-made high mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) overnight.

Romania becomes second Nato country to detect Russian drone in its airspace

BBC News

Romania says a Russian drone has breached its airspace - the second Nato country to report such an incursion. Romanian fighter jets were in the air monitoring a Russian attack in Ukraine on Saturday and were able to track the drone near Ukraine's southern border, the defence ministry said in a statement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the incursion could not be a mistake - it was an obvious expansion of the war by Russia. Moscow has not commented on the Romanian claims. On Wednesday, Poland said it had shot down at least three Russian drones which had entered its airspace.

Strikes on Qatar, Poland shake U.S. sway among friend and foe

The Japan Times

Strikes on Qatar, Poland shake U.S. sway among friend and foe U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at the Museum of the Bible in Washington on Sept. 8. Israeli strikes in Qatar and Russian drone incursions into Poland have challenged the U.S. leaders claims of global respect. The shock Israeli strike against Hamas officials in Doha, followed by Russian drones piercing the airspace of NATO ally Poland, delivered twin blows to President Donald Trump's longtime boast that friends and foes respect the U.S. under his leadership like never before. Trump voiced unhappiness with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for sending warplanes to attack the capital of Qatar, a major U.S. ally, but has otherwise resisted getting more involved. He has declined to denounce Russia's drone incursion into Poland, saying Thursday it could have been a mistake but regardless I'm not happy about anything having to do with that whole situation." Trump's removed attitude contrasts sharply with his repeated claims about his unique ability to solve the world's intractable conflicts. While he has conceded that Russia's war in Ukraine -- which he once pledged to resolve on his first day back in office -- has been more difficult than anticipated, he recently said President Vladimir Putin wants to make a deal for me."

Romania reports drone incursion during Russian attack on Ukraine

How is Russia replenishing its military? What is a'coalition of the willing'? How China forgot promises and'debts' to Ukraine How are Europe, the US pulling apart on Ukraine? Romania has scrambled fighter jets after a drone breached the country's airspace during a Russian attack on neighbouring Ukraine, its Ministry of National Defence said, as Kyiv accused Moscow of expanding its war. The Romanian move on Saturday came as Poland also deployed aircraft and closed an airport in the eastern city of Lublin over the threat of a drone attack.

NATO fighter jets headed to eastern Europe under new'Eastern Sentry' Russian attacks on Ukraine killed at least three people in the Donetsk region and another in Kharkiv, the Kyiv Independent reported on Saturday, citing local officials. A drone breached Romanian airspace during a Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure, prompting Romania to scramble fighter jets, the country's defence minister, Ionut Mosteanu, said.

Drone breaches Romanian airspace during Russian attack on Ukraine

The Japan Times

BUCHAREST - Romania scrambled fighter jets on Saturday when a drone breached the country's airspace during a Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border, the defense ministry said. Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu said the F-16 pilots came close to taking down the drone as it was flying very low before it left national airspace toward Ukraine. A threat of drone strikes also prompted Poland to deploy aircraft and close an airport in the eastern city of Lublin on Saturday, three days after it shot down Russian drones in its airspace with the backing of aircraft from its NATO allies. Romania, a European Union and NATO state which shares a 650-km (400-mile) border with Ukraine, has had Russian drone fragments fall onto its territory repeatedly since Russia began waging war on its neighbor. On Saturday, it scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and later two Eurofighters -- part of German air policing missions in Romania -- and warned citizens in the southeastern county of Tulcea near the Danube and its Ukrainian border to take cover, the defense ministry said in a statement.

As drones swarm battlefields, militaries seek cheaper defenses

The Japan Times

A British SkySpyke anti-drone system by Quell is seen during the international military exercise Baltic Trust 25 at the Selonia military training ground near Viesite, Latvia, on Aug. 27. The proliferation of uncrewed systems in the Ukraine-Russia war has highlighted the importance of drone defense capabilities. But the dilemma militaries around the world face is that the attack weapons tend to be far cheaper than the response to destroy them. Drone costs can range from just a few hundred to several thousand dollars, and their price tag is rapidly depreciating as innovation and mass production pick up. Efforts to solve that conundrum were on display this week at the DSEI defense expo in London, where the halls were packed with lasers, missiles, jammers and even other drones designed to defeat small, uncrewed threats. What they all had in common was an attempt to bring down the cost per kill."

New Nato mission to bolster eastern flank after Russia drone incursion

BBC News

More Nato countries will move their troops and fighter jets eastwards after Poland accused Russia of an unprecedented drone incursion on Wednesday. Denmark, France and Germany have joined a new mission to bolster the military alliance's eastern flank. Other Nato allies are expected to take part later. It came as the Kremlin said on Friday that peace talks with Kyiv were on pause, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying: You can't wear rose-tinted glasses and expect that the negotiation process will yield immediate results. Political tensions have been high across Europe after Poland said 19 Russian drones had flown through its airspace on Wednesday.

An early morning Russian attack on Friday killed three people in northern Ukraine's Sumy region, a regional official reported. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow's attempts to advance in the Sumy area had failed with heavy losses, and Russian operations in the region were being "completely foiled by our forces".
