The Combined Joint Task Force, coalition military forces conducted 32 strikes against ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq on January 12th alone, hitting an ISIS drone launch site in Northwestern Iraq. With the exception of just one day (January 10th), the forces have hit ISIS drones, drone launch sites or drone production sites daily since January 7th. IEDs consist of a range of components that include an initiator, switch, main charge, power source, and a container. C.I.A. Names New Iran Chief in a Sign of Trump's Hard Line

NYT > Middle East

He is known as the Dark Prince or Ayatollah Mike, nicknames he earned as the Central Intelligence Agency officer who oversaw the hunt for Osama bin Laden and the American drone strike campaign that killed thousands of Islamist militants and hundreds of civilians. Now the official, Michael D'Andrea, has a new job. He is running the C.I.A.'s Iran operations, according to current and former intelligence officials, an appointment that is the first major sign that the Trump administration is invoking the hard line the president took against Iran during his campaign. Mr. D'Andrea's new role is one of a number of moves inside the spy agency that signal a more muscular approach to espionage and covert operations under the leadership of Mike Pompeo, the conservative Republican and former congressman, the officials said. The agency also recently named a new chief of counterterrorism, who has begun pushing for greater latitude to strike militants.

Watch a Navy robot submarine launch a drone

Popular Science

"The Unmanned surface vehicle/Unmanned Aerial Vehicle combination gives the former the ability to increase its surveillance capabilities when a desired contact is acoustically detected," said Matthew Hipple, a Defense writer and naval officer. "This saves perishable surveillance assets until they are best utilized, and decrease the exposure of surveillance assets to detection." A floating robot that can launch a flying robot exactly when it needs to means that the flying robot can be a lot cheaper than if it has to be airborne all the time, and therefore if it's lost to weather or enemy fire, it's less of an expense, and there will likely be cheap replacements on hand.

The Uncanny Valley of human-robot interactions

The device named "Spark" flew high above the man on stage with his hands waving in the direction of the flying object. In a demonstration of DJI's newest drone, the audience marveled at the Coke can-sized device's most compelling feature: gesture controls. Instead of a traditional remote control, this flying selfie machine follows hand movements across the sky. Gestures are the most innate language of mammals, and including robots in our primal movements means we have reached a new milestone of co-existence. Madeline Gannon of Carnegie Mellon University is the designer of Mimus, a new gesture controlled robot featured in an art installation at The Design Museum in London, England.

Bought 2 of these drones, purchased 1 of them 4 days after the mavic was announced... took 3 months to receive... While waiting for this drone, I purchased and recommend many aftermarket accessories for the mavic... drone landing gear, waterproof decals, extra batteries, props, carry bag, SD card, drone mat, remote control 3D stick protector, and control adapter for ipad, etc. I had plenty of time to take my time and purchase these items, and also read up on and seen a lot of how to videos on youtube... so I was very prepared to know somewhat how to operate the drone. Now after receiving this drone, I had been waiting so long, so there was no reason I could not take my time to calibrate, go through most of prep before I flew this, changing modes, from stick control to drone control, for very smooth footages. When flying indoors... make sure your radio control reads between drone and controller, do not fly if this is in the red, even though the screen says it's ready to fly... the obstacle avoidance symbol can turn read and can't read, the drone could drift off real fast not giving you much time to control and land.. ( learned this the hard way, damaging props).

Amazon Granted Patent For Drone-And-Parachute Delivery System

International Business Times

Amazon could drop off your package using a drone and parachute, a patent found by GeekWire shows. The patent, titled "Aerial Package Delivery System," was filed on Aug. 26, 2015, and was granted this week. The documents show Amazon is trying to safely deliver your purchased items using a drone without damaging them. "The system can comprise a label that includes a parachute to enable the packages to be dropped from the aerial vehicle, yet land at the package's destination without damage," the patent says. Here's a photo of the drone and parachute delivery included in the documents: Amazon patent shows delivery system using a drone and parachute.

Denver's LaMar's Donuts teamed up with Drone Dispatch -- from Austin, Texas -- to make this hungry tech-lover's dream become a reality and give the world a glimpse into the future of drone delivery. The drones delivered four boxes of LaMar's doughnuts to honor a tradition dating back to World War I when Salvation Army volunteers made doughnuts for soldiers. "We're doing it completely legal, we have very, very short deliveries from the drone where we have a safe takeoff location and the landing area is a Drone Dispatch team member who's receiving the box of doughnuts," CEO of Drone Dispatch, Chris Bonnet, told the AP. Amazon has been testing the delivery-by-drone method since 2016 when it made its first drone delivery of an Amazon Fire TV and a bag of popcorn in the United Kingdom.

Aquatic Fixed-Wing Drone Could Lake-Hop Across Canada

IEEE Spectrum Robotics

Fixed-wing drones are the way to go for efficient flying, but they pose challenges for long term autonomy because of how demanding they are when it comes to takeoffs and landings. You need a nice big flat area, and usually you need infrastructure support. A drone that needs to operate for days or weeks at a time completely on its own can't rely on either, which means you need to get creative. At ICRA this week, researchers from the University of Sherbrooke in Canada have gotten creative, and came up with a very clever design for a fixed wing drone called SUWAVE (Sherbrooke University Water-Air VEhicle) that uses lakes as landing pads. It crash lands in them, recharges with solar power, and then takes off again with a brilliant hinged propeller.

Drones take to the skies to supply doughnuts in Denver

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Drones have taken to the skies in Denver to make doughnut deliveries. A team of UAVs flew through parking lots to deliver doughnuts to Denver's mayor and the city's police and fire department. The event provided a glimpse at a future where groceries and merchandise are delivered quickly and cheaply by drone, according to its organizers. Denver's LaMar's Donuts hired Austin, Texas-based company Drone Dispatch to deliver four boxes of doughnuts using piloted drones flown within a block. LaMar's spokesman Tami Osifodunrin said Federal Aviation Administration regulations prohibit commercial drone pilots from losing sight of drones.
