Shark 'Feeding Frenzy' Seen in Incredible Aerial View
A massive school of fish in the ocean forms a fascinating natural sight. But for sharks, they become breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A vacationer with a drone camera captured a scene fit for a horror movie: a group of sharks, also known as a shiver, feasting on a school of menhaden fish off the coast of New York's Hamptons, one of the most famous vacation spots in the United States. Gregory Skomal, a senior scientist with Massachusetts Marine Fisheries, says sharks often feed on large schools like this, even off popular vacation spots like the Hamptons. "Sharks' travel patterns in the area are well documented, and include regularly feeding on large schools of fish," he said.
Africa Leads the World on Drone Delivery: Flights to Begin in Tanzania in 2018
Drone delivery is finally getting off the ground. And the action is happening in East Africa. Zipline, a pioneering drone startup that began delivering blood packs to Rwanda's remote hospitals in October 2016, today announced a major expansion into Tanzania. In early 2018 the company will begin flying its delivery drones to more than 1000 health care facilities around Tanzania, bringing urgently needed medicines and supplies to big hospitals and tiny rural clinics alike. Keller Rinaudo, founder and CEO of Zipline, says that "the richest companies in the world" are still trying to figure out how to make instant drone delivery work as a commercial service (as IEEE Spectrum has noted in it's coverage of Google's Project Wing and Amazon's Prime Air).
World's first drone delivery service launches in Iceland
Locals in Reykjavik are now getting their takeaways delivered by drone. The world's first operational drone delivery service has launched this week in Iceland's capital city. The company behind the service plans to scale it up in the next few months to make hundreds of drone deliveries each day. If you order a takeaway while in Reykjavik, there's a good chance it will be delivered to you by a drone. Zipline Launches Medical Supply Drone Deliveries in Tanzania
Last month in Rwanda, a young woman started bleeding after giving birth by C-section. Try as they might, her doctors couldn't stop it. They'd already transfused the two units of matching blood that they had on-hand. They could have called the national blood bank in the capital of Kigali to request more, but ordering it, and sending it the 25 miles over mountainous roads to the hospital would take up to four hours. The woman didn't have that kind of time.
Drones are delivering packages in Iceland's capital city
At last, a fully operational urban delivery drone system is here... only you probably won't get to use it. Drone logistics startup Flytrex has teamed up with Iceland's main online retailer, AHA, to launch a courier drone service in Reykjavik. Specifically, it's serving one part of Reykjavik -- robotic fliers carry food across a river in the city, cutting the delivery time from 25 minutes to 4. That doesn't sound like a whole lot, but it could make a big difference both in terms of getting your food quickly and cutting back on delivery costs. This undoubtedly comes across as a publicity grab. The delivery drones aren't carrying large packages, and it's relatively easy to handle a modestly-sized city with few big buildings.
Should the LAPD test drones? Police ask the public to weigh in
Should Los Angeles police be allowed to test the use of drones? The question will be one of many posed Wednesday evening at a series of forums held by the Los Angeles Police Department as it tries to gauge public reaction to its proposal to fly drones during a one-year pilot program. The meetings, scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m., will be held in four locations: the Westwood Recreation Center; Peck Park Recreation Center in San Pedro; Friendship Auditorium near Griffith Park; and the Marvin Braude San Fernando Valley Constituent Service Center in Van Nuys. The LAPD's proposal is still in the early stages -- the civilian Police Commission must sign off on both the pilot program and a policy for testing the drones before any are flown. Drones have been hailed by law enforcement across the country as a valuable technology that could help find missing hikers or monitor armed suspects without jeopardizing the safety of officers.
Why aren't we testing whether planes can survive a drone crash?
But no one has actually done the tests that could reveal what would happen and inform safety. That's strange, given the increasing risk of such an incident. We need to know if it could cause an aircraft engine to explode in what is known as an "uncontained failure", with hot, fast-spinning engine parts being shed in all directions, potentially piercing wings, fuel tanks and even the cabin.
Walmart could use blimps to transport home delivery drones
Amazon's blimps will have company in the sky, according to a new patent revealing that Walmart too wants to develop the aircraft. The discount retail giant has been granted a patent for'gas-filled carrier aircrafts' that would serve as airborne bases for fleets of delivery drones. It strikes similar to the one filed last year by Amazon, indicating that tensions are heating up between the two companies as they compete to dominate e-commerce shopping.
