Nebraska City on the Verge of Regulating Drone Flights

U.S. News

The city's resolution is based on regulations put in place by the Federal Aviation Administration last year. The proposal will require drones to remain within 400 feet of the ground and within the operator's eyesight. They'll only be allowed to fly during daylight hours and only over property where owners have granted permission. Drone flying would be banned near airports, electric facilities and wires, and water intake facilities. Violations carry a $500 fine.

China, Russia and the US are in an artificial intelligence arms race

#artificialintelligence

For Russia and Vladimir Putin, it is clear that planetary domination and artificial intelligence (AI) are inextricably intertwined. "Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia but for all humankind," he said via live video feed as schools started this month. "Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world." Putin isn't an outlier in his thinking; he is simply vocalizing to match the intensity a race that China, Russia, and the US are already running, to acquire smart military power. Each nation has formally recognized the critical importance of intelligent machines to the future of their national security, and each sees AI-related technologies such as autonomous drones and intelligence processing software as tools for augmenting human soldier capital.

Banksy donates funds from anti-arms artwork sale

BBC News

The anonymous street artist Banksy has donated ยฃ205,000 from the sale of a protest piece to anti-arms campaigners. The artwork, Civilian Drone Strike, was on display at the Stop the Arms Fair art exhibition in east London. It depicts drones destroying a cartoon image of a house, while a child and her dog look on in distress. The exhibition was held alongside the world's largest arms fair, the Defence and Security Equipment International - both exhibitions closed on Friday. The art exhibition claimed to highlight "the inhumanity of the arms trade" through art, with work by more than 1,600 exhibitors from 54 countries.

A foldable cargo drone

Robohub

The field of drone delivery is currently a big topic in robotics. However, the reason that your internet shopping doesn't yet arrive via drone is that current flying robots can prove a safety risk to people and are difficult to transport and store. A team from the Floreano Lab, NCCR Robotics and EPFL present a new type of cargo drone that is inspired by origami, is lightweight and easily manoeuvrable and uses a foldaway cage to ensure safety and transportability. A foldable protective cage sits around a multicopter and around the package to be carried, shielding spinning propellers and ensuring safety of all people around it. When the folding cage is opened in order to either load or unload the drone, a safety mechanism ensures that the engine is cut off, meaning that safety is ensured, even with completely untrained users.

Drone Strike Kills 3 Militants in NW Pakistan, Say Officials

U.S. News

ISLAMABAD (AP) -- Two Pakistani officials say a suspected U.S. drone strike has targeted a compound in a northwestern tribal region along the Afghan border, killing three suspected militants. The officials said two suspects were also wounded in Friday's strike on a border village in the Kurram tribal region. If confirmed, it would be the first U.S. drone strike on Pakistan since President Donald Trump announced his new strategy for Afghanistan. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief media. The officials said apparently Afghan Taliban, including member Abdul Salam, were targeted but it was unclear whether they were present at the time. Salam is a relative of Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, who served as ambassador to Pakistan during the Taliban's rule.

Suspected U.S. Drone Strike Targets Militants in Pakistan, Regional Official Says

U.S. News

PARACHINAR/PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A suspected U.S. drone strike killed three people in the tribal area of Pakistan near the Afghanistan border on Friday, a senior regional official said, in what Afghan Taliban sources say was an attack targeting a Haqqani network militant.

Hurricane Harvey and the transformative power of commercial UAVs - TotalCIO

@machinelearnbot

For an example of the transformative role drones -- or unmanned aerial vehicles, as they're known in the industry -- will play across industries, just consider, said Michael Huerta, administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, what happened after Hurricane Harvey struck Texas last week. Looking to establish accountability across disparate project teams? Trying to automate processes or allow for lean methodology support? Hoping to enable business consequence modeling or real-time reporting? If you answered'yes' to any of these questions, then you need to download this comprehensive, 68-page PDF guide on selecting, managing, and tracking IT projects for superior service delivery. EPFL's Collapsable Delivery Drone Protects Your Package With an Origami Cage

IEEE Spectrum Robotics

Of the many, many (many many many) challenges that are inherent to urban drone delivery, safety is one of the most important. Nobody has a reliable, cost-effective solution for this, although we've seen some unreliable ones (dangling packages on strings) and cumbersome ones (dedicated, protected landing pads), so we've been missing an elegant way of protecting end users from robots that fly with spinning blades of death. EPFL in Switzerland has had a solution for this for years--drones surrounded by protective cages that allow them to bounce off of obstacles. As far as the drones are concerned, humans are obstacles as well, so a protective cage does pretty well at protecting them from us (and vice versa). The annoying thing about these cages has always been that they're all kinds of bulky, especially if they're protecting a quadrotor beefy enough to be useful.

Parrot's Mambo FPV mini quadcopter gives you a drone's eye view

Engadget

If you're a fan of racing drones, then you may want to pay attention to Parrot's latest product release. The drone company has announced the Parrot Mambo FPV, a minidrone equipped with a first-person HD camera that allows both live streaming and video recording. The drone can fly up to 18 miles per hour and has three piloting modes, Easy, Racing and Drift, depending on what your goals and experience level are. We're not sure when exactly it will be available, though we know it's sometime this month. It will cost you $180.
