Trump Personal Pilot Under Consideration for FAA Chief: Sources

U.S. News

The FAA is part of a Trump administration effort to expand testing of drones to include flights over people, nighttime operations and flights out of sight of the operator. The White House and the FAA in October announced a test program to speed up the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles into the national airspace system and to test drone detection and tracking while waiving some limits on their use.

Could drones replace fireworks in the UK?

BBC News

The Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang came to a spectacular close on Sunday - but in addition to the usual fireworks finish, there was an added technique that prompted gasps from the audience. Organisers used an army of drones covered in LED lights to make patterns to illuminate the South Korean sky with illusions of the Olympic rings, patterns of Soohorang - the white tiger mascot - and figures of competitors. But could this technology spread across the globe and takeover from our more traditional whizz bang fireworks? The internet reaction to the drones was overwhelmingly positive. Give the drone pilots a gold medal!

Industrial drones are the new 'sensor network' ZDNet

#artificialintelligence

We usually think of aerial drones as consumer technology or used by the military to fly pilot-less missions. But there is an entire industry dedicated to using drones in industrial settings like mining, construction, and insurance. The technology of industrial drones is fascinating and involves components such as ruggedized flight bodies, GPS, and LIDAR, in addition to cameras. These industrial drones combine data collection from a network of sensors with advanced image processing techniques and artificial intelligence. So I could learn more, public relations ninja, Laura Hoang, introduced me to George Mathew, CEO of industrial drone supplier, Kespry.

MFW: Dolce and Gabbana chiefs use drones to carry bags

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The Dolce and Gabbana fashion show in Milan has delighted attendees by using drones to fly handbags down the catwalk. Guests were reportedly kept waiting 45 minutes - after organisers had to ensure everyone turned off their Wi-Fi - while being kept in the dark about the upcoming demonstration. The drones' appearance was accompanied by a Kendrick Lamar song - 'All The Stars' - while men and women wearing white lab coats walked alongside the aircraft with remote controls. But after the exhibition of nifty technology, old-fashioned human models were brought out to show off D&G's latest clothes. At drone fair, Chinese show off armed model likely being used by UAE military

The Japan Times

ABU DHABI – Walking through a trade show all about military drones, Emirati officials made a point on Sunday to stop first at a stand run by Chinese officials with a mock armed drone hanging above them. Defense analysts believe that drone, the Wing Loong II, is now being used by the Emirati military while the United Arab Emirates remains barred from purchasing weaponized drones from the United States. That purchase, as well as Abu Dhabi hosting the Unmanned Systems Exhibition & Conference this week in the Emirati capital, shows the power these weapons now hold across the Middle East. Top UAE officials, including Abu Dhabi's powerful crown prince, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, were on hand for the drone conference, which opened on Sunday. The UAE, home to skyscraper-studded Dubai, already has embraced drones.

Chinese drone maker is competing with Uber to develop flying taxis

#artificialintelligence

In Guangzhou earlier this month 40 people, including the deputy mayor of the southern Chinese province, lined up for a taste of the future of transport – an autonomous flying taxi. The Ehang 184 drone flew the passengers on round trips of up to 15 kilometres, with some reaching the top speed of 130km per hour. The successful passenger flights by the Guangzhou-based company come as tech firms around the world race to launch new methods of mobility and carve out a slice of the fast-growing market. "This makes you feel like you have travelled into the future, like you're in a sci-fi movie. But this is real," Ehang's founder and chief executive Hu Huazhi said in a company video that showed footage of the flight tests.
