Drone-to-door medicines trial takes flight in Ireland

BBC News - Technology

A drone company that had to abandon its fast-food delivery tests has partnered with Ireland's health authority to deliver prescriptions instead. Manna Aero is working with the Health Service Executive to deliver medicines and other essential supplies to vulnerable people in the small rural town of Moneygall. The company's trial uses autonomous drones made in Wales. And it is looking at the possibility of testing in the UK within weeks. The UK has already announced a test of drones to carry supplies to the Isle of Wight during the pandemic.

UAE drone strike on factory near Tripoli killed 8 civilians: HRW

Al Jazeera

A United Arab Emirates (UAE) drone strike on a biscuit factory near the Libyan capital Tripoli on November 18 killed eight civilians and injured 27 others, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said. In a report released on Wednesday, the rights group said the UAE appeared to take little or no action to minimise civilian casualties and called on Emirati authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the incident. "Since the current armed conflict in Tripoli erupted in April 2019, the UAE has been conducting air and drone strikes to support the Libyan Arab Armed forces, previously known as the Libyan National Army [LNA], one of two major parties to the conflict, some of which have resulted in civilian casualties," HRW said. "All causalities in the November incident were civilian factory workers, including seven Libyans and 28 foreign nationals, all of them men." Human Rights Watch visited the site and found remnants of at least four Blue Arrow-7 (BA-7) laser-guided missiles that were launched by a Wing Loong-II drone.

Delivery Robots Aren't Ready--When They Could Be Needed Most

WIRED

Americans choosing to --or forced to--stay inside during the Covid-19 pandemic are leaning heavily on food delivery. Instacart sales soared 98 percent, and Amazon Fresh sales 68 percent, in March, compared with February, according to the consumer analytics firm Second Measure. Restaurants that can't open their doors are tapping delivery services to preserve some revenue. But many delivery workers say they don't feel safe. Workers for Instacart have said they lack the gloves, face masks, and disinfectant to do the job safely; others who have received equipment complain it's subpar.

DJI Mavic Air 2: Specs, Price, Release Date

WIRED

Drone maker DJI announced an update to its popular Mavic Air quadcopter today. The Mavic Air 2 will cost $799 when it ships to US buyers in late May. That's the same price as the previous Mavic Air model, so the drone stays as DJI's mid-range option between its more capable Mavic 2 and its smaller, cheaper Mavic Mini. The Mavic Air 2 is still plenty small, but the new version has put on some weight. DJI says that testing and consumer surveys suggested that most people don't mind lugging a few extra grams in exchange for a considerable upgrade in flight time and, presumably, better handling in windy conditions.

Anchor Neural World gaining momentum

#artificialintelligence

Anchor Neural World blockchain platform, is receiving increasing support from Japan's investment holdings and high-tech companies around the world. The recent strategic partnership agreement between Anchor Value (that invested in ANW blockchain platform) and the Shenzhen Drone Manufacturers Association (Shenzhen UAV Industry Association) has attracted attention not only from specialists but also from the major Japanese media. Publications in SANSPO, ASAHI, NICOVIDEO and DREAM NEWS highlighted not only the potential of artificial intelligence in the management and opportunities provided by blockchain technologies but also the uniqueness of ANW artificial intelligence engine, which can be used with maximum efficiency in any of spheres from finance to education. The visibility and recognisability of the ANW platform is already increasing according to the principle of a snow bowl: as companies join the project, its development becomes more powerful, which increases the attractiveness of the platform for innovative business.

DJI's Mavic Air 2 offers 34 minutes of flight time and 48-megapixel photos

Engadget

If you happened across DJI's website this week, you can't have missed the prominent teaser for a new product -- or maybe you saw the leak that basically gave the game away. Well, it's finally official: say hello to the Mavic Air 2. As the name suggests, it's a sequel to the 2018's Mavic Air -- a drone I was very taken with. According to the company, the Mavic Air 2 isn't a simple tune-up, it was redesigned from the ground up with a particular focus on the user experience and not just ramping up the specs. Though we'll be the judge of that once we get our hands on it. DJI might be focusing on how much easier the Mavic Air 2 is to fly, but to be fair, the specs definitely weren't an afterthought.

UPS and CVS set to deliver prescription medication by drone to a Florida retirement community

Daily Mail - Science & tech

CVS and the United Parcel Service (UPS) will use drones to deliver prescription medication to residents in a Florida retirement community that is under lockdown due to the coronavirus. Starting on May 4th, those living in The Villages will receive their prescriptions from a Matternet's M2 drone. The drones will drop off orders at a designated spot outside of the community and an employee will transport the items to each person's home. The Villages, which is home to some 135,000 people, is the US's largest retirement community and has reported 171 cases and 12 deaths during the pandemic. Scott Price, UPS chief strategy and transformation officer, said: 'Our new drone delivery service will help CVS provide safe and efficient deliveries of medicines to this large retirement community, enabling residents to receive medications without leaving their homes.'

Drone Deliveries, Food Supplies, and More Car News This Week

WIRED

This week, we talked to people trying to help stem the hurt of the Covid-19 pandemic--with mixed success. One company, Zipline, is using drones to help deliver virus testing supplies and personal protective equipment in Ghana. It has accelerated efforts to bring the approach to the US, though don't expect to see helper drones in the air before later this year. Farmers, packers, and processors want to get their produce, milk, and meat to consumers, but complex supply chains--and basic economics--are proving hard to hack. Let's get you caught up.
