Drone saves the life of man, 71, suffering a heart attack by delivering defibrillator to his home

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A 71-year-old Swedish man who suffered a heart attack while shoveling snow in his driveway was saved by an unlikely hero - a delivery drone. Sven, a retiree who asked for his last name to be withheld, collapsed outside his home in the western town of Trollhättan in early December. Within moments of receiving the call from Sven's wife, emergency services dispatched the unmanned aerial vehicle carrying an AED, or automated external defibrillator, which arrived in less than four minutes. The system, called Emergency Medical Aerial Delivery (EMADE), was developed by Everdrones to assist patients within 10 minutes of experiencing cardiac arrest. 'Everything from the first 112 call to the drone getting the signal to start and go took about 15-30 seconds and then the whole process took about three and a half minutes,' Sven told AFP.

A base hosting U.S. troops at Baghdad's international airport came under rocket fire on Wednesday while indirect fire hit another base hosting U.S. troops in Syria, part of a string of attacks in the days after the anniversary of the death of top Iranian general Qassim Soleimani. Eight rounds of indirect fire hit the base in Syria run by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, causing minor damage inside the base but no casualties. No damage or casualties were reported from the Iraq attack, military officials said.

LEONARDO, the Bipedal Robot, Can Ride a Skateboard and Walk a Slackline

#artificialintelligence

Researchers at Caltech have built a bipedal robot that combines walking with flying to create a new type of locomotion, making it exceptionally nimble and capable of complex movements. Part walking robot, part flying drone, the newly developed LEONARDO (short for LEgs ONboARD drOne, or LEO for short) can walk a slackline, hop, and even ride a skateboard. Developed by a team at Caltech's Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies (CAST), LEO is the first robot that uses multi-joint legs and propeller-based thrusters to achieve a fine degree of control over its balance. A paper about the LEO robot was published online on October 6 and was featured on the October 2021 cover of Science Robotics. "We drew inspiration from nature. Think about the way birds are able to flap and hop to navigate telephone lines," says Soon-Jo Chung, corresponding author and Bren Professor of Aerospace and Control and Dynamical Systems.

Drone attack on Iraq base foiled, 2nd one in 24 hours: Coalition

Al Jazeera

For the second time in 24 hours, a United States-led coalition fighting ISIL (ISIS) in Iraq says it has foiled a drone attack on a base hosting US troops. An official of the international military coalition said on Tuesday two armed drones were shot down as they approached the base in western Anbar province. "Two fixed-wing drones rigged with explosives were engaged and destroyed by defensive capabilities at the Iraqi Ain al-Asad airbase early this morning," the official was quoted as saying by news agencies. "The attempted attack was unsuccessful. All forces are accounted for."

Iran Vows Revenge Unless Trump Tried For Soleimani Killing

International Business Times

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi vowed revenge against Donald Trump unless the former US president is tried over the killing of Qassem Soleimani, as Tehran marked two years since the revered commander's death. The Islamic republic and its allies across the Middle East held emotional commemorations for General Soleimani and his Iraqi lieutenant who were assassinated in a US drone strike at Baghdad airport on January 3, 2020. Tehran's arch enemies were targeted on the day of the anniversary in unclaimed drone and cyber attacks -- with two armed unmanned aerial vehicles intercepted by the US-led coalition in Iraq over Baghdad airport, and hackers attacking Israeli media sites. Soleimani headed the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, with links to armed groups in Iraq, Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Syria and Yemen. Raisi, addressing Tehran's largest prayer hall, said: "The aggressor and the main assassin, the then president of the United States, must face justice and retribution" alongside former US secretary of state Mike Pompeo "and other criminals".

Iraq: Drone attack on US base near Baghdad airport foiled

Al Jazeera

Two armed drones were shot down as they approached an Iraqi military base hosting US forces near Baghdad's international airport, Iraqi security sources said, adding that nobody was hurt in the incident. An official of the US-led international military coalition stationed there said the base's defence system engaged "two fixed-wing suicide drones… they were shot down without incident". "This was a dangerous attack on a civilian airport," the coalition official said in a brief statement on Monday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Footage provided by the coalition showed what the official said was debris of two fixed-wing drones destroyed in the attack, with writing clearly visible on the wing of one drone reading "Soleimani's revenge".

The Jerusalem Post said Monday that its website and Twitter account were targeted by "pro-Iranian hackers" who posted an ominous image of a model of the Israeli Dimona nuclear facility under a ballistic missile attack. "We are close to you where you do not think about it," the text in the image read. The paper pointed out that the missile seems to be fired from a ring known to be found on Qassem Soleimani's hand after a Jan. 2, 2020 U.S. drone strike at Baghdad International Airport that resulted in his death.

Robust Semi-supervised Federated Learning for Images Automatic Recognition in Internet of Drones

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Air access networks have been recognized as a significant driver of various Internet of Things (IoT) services and applications. In particular, the aerial computing network infrastructure centered on the Internet of Drones has set off a new revolution in automatic image recognition. This emerging technology relies on sharing ground truth labeled data between Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarms to train a high-quality automatic image recognition model. However, such an approach will bring data privacy and data availability challenges. To address these issues, we first present a Semi-supervised Federated Learning (SSFL) framework for privacy-preserving UAV image recognition. Specifically, we propose model parameters mixing strategy to improve the naive combination of FL and semi-supervised learning methods under two realistic scenarios (labels-at-client and labels-at-server), which is referred to as Federated Mixing (FedMix). Furthermore, there are significant differences in the number, features, and distribution of local data collected by UAVs using different camera modules in different environments, i.e., statistical heterogeneity. To alleviate the statistical heterogeneity problem, we propose an aggregation rule based on the frequency of the client's participation in training, namely the FedFreq aggregation rule, which can adjust the weight of the corresponding local model according to its frequency. Numerical results demonstrate that the performance of our proposed method is significantly better than those of the current baseline and is robust to different non-IID levels of client data.
