After Ukraine, 'whole world' is a customer for Turkish drone, maker says

The Japan Times

BAKU, Azerbaijan – Ukraine's destruction of Russian artillery systems and armored vehicles with Turkish Bayraktar TB2 aerial drones has made "the whole world" a customer, according to its designer. Selcuk Bayraktar, who runs the Istanbul firm Baykar with his brother Haluk, said the drones had shown how technology was revolutionizing modern warfare. 28-Drone Swarm Just Led The Way For A Simulated Air Assault Mission

#artificialintelligence

We don't know for sure how the ALTIUS-600s were configured for this particular event, but the drone weighs between 20-and 27 pounds, depending on its payload. It has a range of 276 miles and can stay aloft for at least four hours. It launches from either a Pneumatically Integrated Launch System (PILS), the Common Launch Tube (CLT), and the Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform (RIwP). It can carry a variety of payloads to perform a range of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and signals intelligence (SIGINT) missions. ALTIUS can also be fitted with a warhead for offensive missions or used as a counter-drone weapon using Lockheed Martin's MoRFIUS or Mobile Radio Frequency-Integrated UAS Suppressor. The FVL CFT posted a clip of an ALTIUS being launched from a ground-based catapult to Twitter.

Lithuanians crowdfund $5.4m for combat drone to Ukraine

Al Jazeera

Hundreds of Lithuanians contributed to a fundraiser to buy an advanced military drone for Ukraine in its war against Russia in a show of solidarity with a fellow country formerly under Moscow's rule. The target of 5 million euros ($5.4m) was raised in just three and a half days in Lithuania – a country of 2.8 million people – largely in small amounts to fund the purchase of a Byraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicle from Turkey. Laisves TV, a Lithuanian internet broadcaster, launched the fund-raising drive. "Before this war started, none of us thought that we would be buying guns. Something must be done for the world to get better," said Agne Belickaite, 32, who sent 100 euros as soon as the effort began last week.

China Launches World's First Drone Mothership; Likely To Be Used For Military Purposes

International Business Times

China has launched the world's first drone carrier, a vessel that will likely be used for military purposes. The ship, Zhu Hai Yun, can be controlled remotely to navigate autonomously in open water. Zhu Hai Yun, launched last week, has a wide deck equipped to carry dozens of unmanned vehicles including drones, unmanned ships and submersibles, reported the South China Morning Post. This also makes it a powerful platform to launch UAVs for military purposes, though Beijing claims the vehicle has been designed for marine research purposes. The drone mothership is expected to be commissioned by the end of the year after sea trials. According to the Chinese state-run Science and Technology Daily, the ship could be an "efficient tool in marine disaster prevention and mitigation, environmental monitoring and offshore wind farm maintenance besides delivering accurate marine information."

Last year, a meteorite was discovered at the remote Kybo Station on the Nullarbor Plain. It's only 70g – roughly the same as a large egg – and looks suspiciously like kangaroo faeces. Drone imagery of a 5 square kilometre'fall zone' was used to find the small space rock in the vast WA desert. The footage was then examined for meteorites using artificial intelligence, and voila! This is the first time this strategy has worked anyplace on the planet.

Russia Probably Has Not Used AI-Enabled Weapons in Ukraine, but That Could Change

#artificialintelligence

In March, WIRED ran a story with the headline "Russia's Killer Drone in Ukraine Raises Fears About AI in Warfare," with the subtitle, "The maker of the lethal drone claims that it can identify targets using artificial intelligence." The story focused on the KUB-BLA, a small kamikaze drone aircraft that smashes itself into enemy targets and detonates an onboard explosive. The KUB-BLA is made by ZALA Aero, a subsidiary of the Russian weapons manufacturer Kalashnikov (best known as the maker of the AK-47), which itself is partly owned by Rostec, a part of Russia's government-owned defense-industrial complex. The WIRED story understandably attracted a lot of attention, but those who only read the sensational headline missed the article's critical caveat: "It is unclear if the drone may have been operated in this [an AI-enabled autonomous] way in Ukraine." Other outlets re-reported the WIRED story, but irresponsibly did so without the caveat.

Droning the Future of India

As an avid (retail and otherwise) investor and contributor in Indian and world technology markets, with the inputs from my friend from one of the largest Indian online brokerage firm; I am expressing my and collective views on Indian Drone Industry Growth in general. Please expect a technical analysis of the mechanism of Drone in separate post- however, right now i am trying and attempting to spice up and invite interest of non scientific community to this beautiful application based on ground Indian reality. These Drone companies, will provide commercial robotic drones and drone-based solutions for crop protection, crop health, precision farming, and yield monitoring using artificial intelligence and analytics for the agricultural sector. Some of the very promising Indian stocks worth buying in this area (***pls check for yourself and analyze instead of buying them straight way). Adani Enterprises*** announced on May 27 that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a 50 percent stake in General Aeronautics Private Limited.

Sensitive Iranian Military Site Was Targeted in Attack

NYT > Middle East

In early February, Israel sent six quadcopter drones containing explosives into a facility near the city of Kermanshah that was Iran's main manufacturing and storage plant for military drones, according to a senior intelligence official briefed on the operation. That Israeli attack destroyed dozens of Iran's drones. Iran retaliated by firing ballistic missiles at a housing complex in northern Iraq that it said had been used by Israeli agents to plot attacks against Iran. In June 2021, another attack using a quadcopter drone -- which explodes on impact -- was also launched from within the country. It struck the Iran Centrifuge Technology Company, or TESA, in the city of Karaj.

Pixy drone hands-on: A flying robot photographer for Snapchat users

Engadget

Drones are everywhere these days, filming dramatic reveals and awe-inspiring scenery for social media platforms. The problem is, they're not exactly approachable for beginners who have only ever used a smartphone. Last month, Snap debuted the $230 Pixy drone exactly for those people. It requires very little skill and acts like a personal robot photographer to help you produce nifty aerial shots. You don't need to pilot the Pixy.
