Will alleged drone sales to Russia impact Iran's nuclear deal?

Al Jazeera

Tehran, Iran – Iran and the West are clashing over Tehran's alleged drone sales to Russia for the war in Ukraine, an issue now being linked to a UN resolution backing the country's nuclear deal with world powers. UN Security Council Resolution 2231 was unanimously adopted in 2015 to endorse the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – the accord that Iran signed with China, Russia, United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany to get sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme. The US unilaterally abandoned the accord in 2018 and imposed harsh sanctions that remain in place today. Efforts since April 2021 to restore the deal have stalled. European powers are now trying to use a periodic reporting mechanism in the resolution.

Zelenskyy says Russia is 'probably' paying for Iranian drones with nuclear research assistance

FOX News

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says it's time for everyone to take a stand against the Iranian regime on'One Nation with Brian Kilmeade.' Russia is "probably" paying for Iranian kamikaze drones by assisting Iran's nuclear research programs, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday. Zelenskyy made the statement during an address to the Haaretz Democracy Conference on Monday, saying Russia has purchased at least 2,000 Shahed-136 drones and has used them to bombard Ukraine. Iranian instructors have been spotted in Belarus teaching Russian forces to coordinate drone strikes with the Iranian-made drone system, leading to further fears that Belarus' role in the conflict in Ukraine may soon escalate. "Russia has used almost 4,500 missiles against us, and their stock of missiles is dwindling," Zelenskyy said.

The US Navy wants swarms of thousands of small drones

MIT Technology Review

"The significance of drone swarms is that they can be conceivably applied to virtually any mission." Many nations are working on such swarms, including China, Russia, India, the UK, Turkey, and Israel, which in 2021 became the first nation to use swarming drones in combat. The US Navy has always been a leader in this field, and while they did not respond to requests to discuss their work, the budget documents that MIT Technology Review has read reveal ambitious plans for swarms vastly bigger than anything yet seen. Buried in hundreds of pages of budget numbers are details of several projects not previously revealed, which involve drone boats and submarines as well as uncrewed air vehicles. Together they fall under a project named Super Swarm.

FlowDrone: Wind Estimation and Gust Rejection on UAVs Using Fast-Response Hot-Wire Flow Sensors

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are finding use in applications that place increasing emphasis on robustness to external disturbances including extreme wind. However, traditional multirotor UAV platforms do not directly sense wind; conventional flow sensors are too slow, insensitive, or bulky for widespread integration on UAVs. Instead, drones typically observe the effects of wind indirectly through accumulated errors in position or trajectory tracking. In this work, we integrate a novel flow sensor based on micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) hot-wire technology developed in our prior work onto a multirotor UAV for wind estimation. These sensors are omnidirectional, lightweight, fast, and accurate. In order to achieve superior tracking performance in windy conditions, we train a `wind-aware' residual-based controller via reinforcement learning using simulated wind gusts and their aerodynamic effects on the drone. In extensive hardware experiments, we demonstrate the wind-aware controller outperforming two strong `wind-unaware' baseline controllers in challenging windy conditions. Humpback whale pulls off stunning move during rescue in Canada, video shows

FOX News

A humpback whale caught in a fishing rope off the western coast of Canada stunned rescuers when it pulled off a magnificent maneuver to free itself. A humpback whale entangled in fishing gear off the coast of western Canada was caught on video pulling off a spectacular maneuver to free itself as rescuers worked to help the sea creature. The ocean mammal was caught in the ropes of a buoy used to catch prawn for two days when rescuers caught up with the whale near Texada Island on Oct. 14, Fisheries and Oceans Canada said. The department's Marine Mammal Rescue team was following the distressed whale when its aerial drone spotted two more humpback whales swimming alongside the creature. Before rescuers attempted to cut the rope that was caught in the animal's mouth, they added some drag to slow the whale down, Paul Cottrell, with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, told the BBC.

Russia's Shoigu warns of 'uncontrolled escalation' in Ukraine conflict

FOX News

Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told his French counterpart in a telephone call on Sunday that the situation in Ukraine was rapidly deteriorating and trending towards "uncontrolled escalation". In a phone call with French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu published by the Russian side, Shoigu said Moscow had concerns Ukraine could use a "dirty bomb" in the conflict, without providing evidence to support the suggestion that Ukraine might use such a weapon. "They discussed the situation in Ukraine which is rapidly deteriorating," the defense ministry said in a readout of the call.

Desarollo de un Dron Low-Cost para Tareas Indoor

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

ABSTRACT: Commercial drones are not yet dimensioned to perform indoor autonomous tasks, since they use GPS for their location in the environment. When it comes to a space with physical obstacles (walls, metal, etc.) between the communication of the drone and the satellites that allow the precise location of the same, there is great difficulty in finding the satellites or it generates interference for this location. This problem can cause an unexpected action of the drone, a collision and a possible accident can occur, The work to follow presents the development of a drone capable of operating in a physical space (indoor), without the need for GPS. In this proposal, a prototype of a system for detecting the distance (lidar) that the drone is from the walls is also developed, with the aim of being able to take this information as the location of the drone.

Iran slams call for UN probe into alleged use of its drones

Al Jazeera

Iran has strongly condemned a call by France, Germany and the United Kingdom for the United Nations to investigate the accusations that Russia has used Iranian-origin drones to attack Ukraine, according to its foreign ministry. Nasser Kanaani, spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, said on Saturday that the call by the so-called E-3 group of countries was "false and baseless" and that it was "strongly rejected and condemned". Ukraine says Russia has used Iranian-made Shahed-136 attack drones that cruise towards their target and explode on impact. "The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in its pursuit to protect its national interest and to secure the rights of the noble Iranian people, reserves the right to respond to any irresponsible action," the Iranian foreign ministry website quoted Kanaani as saying. "It will not hesitate to defend the interests of the Iranian people," he said, without elaborating.

'Star Wars' actor Mark Hamill donated 500 drones to Ukraine forces through charity

FOX News

Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin provides insight on responding to drone attacks in Ukraine on'America Reports.' "Star Wars" actor Mark Hamill donated 500 drones to assist Ukraine in its efforts to push back Russian forces. "Very simply: Ukraine needs drones," Hamill told host Joe Mathieu during an appearance on Bloomberg Radio's "Sound On." "They define war outcomes, they protect their land, their people, they monitor the border, they're eyes in the sky," Hamill said, adding that he was "honored" to support the mission, which would include raising funds to support Ukraine's UNITED24 "Army of Drones" project. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the program's launch last year, including Hamill's role as an ambassador for the program. So far, donations through UNITED24 have reached more than $210 million. CONOR KENNEDY, RFK'S GRANDSON AND TAYLOR SWIFT'S EX, REVEALS UKRAINE SERVICE: 'I WAS … WILLING TO DIE' "I was really shocked because they give me these updates at least two or three times a week about what's going on, and they said they've received over 500 drones since I started this," the actor revealed.

FedEx is shutting down its robot delivery program

Roxo was announced in 2019 as a collaboration with DEKA, makers of the iBot wheelchair, which used multiple sets of wheels to "walk" up and down stairs, and raise its user from a sitting level to eye-height. Roxo also used multiple sets of wheels to climb steps and curbs. The robot had a top speed of 10mph, a cargo capacity of 100lbs (45kg), and was able to autonomously navigate around cars and pedestrians using cameras and LIDAR sensors. Human operators were used to oversee its movements and steer it manually if necessary.
