Coco Delivery Robot Spotted in Santa Monica

#artificialintelligence

During an extended weekend in Santa Monica, I came across a series of Coco delivery robots. These cooler-sized robots on wheels are parked in a few spots between Ocean Avenue and 3rd Street, waiting for their orders. This Coco delivery robot was spotted in Santa Monica on 2nd Street crossing Santa Monica Boulevard at about 10:30am. This article was also published in German.

UK's Sunak meets Zelenskyy in Kyiv, offers new arms for Ukraine

Al Jazeera

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a new air defence package worth $60m as he met Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his first trip to Kyiv since becoming prime minister. "I am here today to say that the UK will continue to stand with you โ€ฆ until Ukraine has won the peace and security it needs and deserves," Sunak said in a news conference with Zelenskyy in Kyiv. The British prime minister said the defence package includes "120 aircraft guns, radar and anti-drone equipment". It comes as Russia has disabled nearly half of the country's energy system, forcing blackouts across the country amid winter temperatures dipping to as low as zero degrees. With friends like you by our side, we are confident in our victory.

The racing drone that could kill

Washington Post - Technology News

The Lanius's ability to use algorithms to differentiate enemies from allies seems worrisome, she said. The general public should know how the drone distinguishes between combatant and civilian, what data the system's algorithm is trained on to make those calls, who has labeled the data being used, and what kind of behavior is being flagged as making someone seem threatening, she said.

SeaDroneSim: Simulation of Aerial Images for Detection of Objects Above Water

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are known for their fast and versatile applicability. With UAVs' growth in availability and applications, they are now of vital importance in serving as technological support in search-and-rescue(SAR) operations in marine environments. High-resolution cameras and GPUs can be equipped on the UAVs to provide effective and efficient aid to emergency rescue operations. With modern computer vision algorithms, we can detect objects for aiming such rescue missions. However, these modern computer vision algorithms are dependent on numerous amounts of training data from UAVs, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive for maritime environments. To this end, we present a new benchmark suite, SeaDroneSim, that can be used to create photo-realistic aerial image datasets with the ground truth for segmentation masks of any given object. Utilizing only the synthetic data generated from SeaDroneSim, we obtain 71 mAP on real aerial images for detecting BlueROV as a feasibility study. This result from the new simulation suit also serves as a baseline for the detection of BlueROV.

Vicor Powering Innovation Podcast Features DPI UAV Systems Tethered Drone

#artificialintelligence

The Vicor Corporation Powering Innovation podcast focuses on world-changing innovations, examining how electronics technologies can be applied to solve real-world challenges. The first episode in the series features DPI UAV Systems (DPI), a manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. This episode takes a deep dive into an Unmanned Multirotor Aerial Relay system and how DPI is extending communications range 3x with a new class of tethered UAVs. Joe Pawelczyk, Vice President of Operations at DPI, joins Robert Gendron, Vicor's Corporate Vice President, Product Development, to discuss the cutting-edge technology driving change that addresses real-world problems. The episode examines the communication networks needed for high-security communications, such as in military applications, and how DPI's technology is far exceeding today's standards.

UAV Assisted Data Collection for Internet of Things: A Survey

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Thanks to the advantages of flexible deployment and high mobility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely applied in the areas of disaster management, agricultural plant protection, environment monitoring and so on. With the development of UAV and sensor technologies, UAV assisted data collection for Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted increasing attentions. In this article, the scenarios and key technologies of UAV assisted data collection are comprehensively reviewed. First, we present the system model including the network model and mathematical model of UAV assisted data collection for IoT. Then, we review the key technologies including clustering of sensors, UAV data collection mode as well as joint path planning and resource allocation. Finally, the open problems are discussed from the perspectives of efficient multiple access as well as joint sensing and data collection. This article hopefully provides some guidelines and insights for researchers in the area of UAV assisted data collection for IoT.

Israel, US point to Iran after drone strikes Israeli-controlled tanker off Oman's coast

FOX News

Netanyahu spoke to Fox News Digital following the release of his new memoir, "Bibi: My Story." Officials in Israel say Iran is responsible for a drone strike that hit an Israel-associated, Liberian-flagged oil tanker off the coast of Oman on Tuesday. The tanker, the Pacific Zircon, sustained minor damage to its hull with no injuries or spillage of the gas oil cargo, Israeli-controlled Eastern Pacific Shipping said Wednesday, and an Israeli official said Iran was responsible. Three maritime sources told Reuters that a drone was suspected to have attacked the tanker. An Israeli official said Iran was responsible for the attack by using a Shahed-136 drone, the type it has been supplying to Russia for use in its war against Ukraine.

Israel Blames Iran As 'Drone Strike' Hits Tanker Off Oman

International Business Times

Israel blamed Iran on Wednesday after what it said was a drone strike hit a tanker operated by an Israeli-owned firm carrying gas oil off the coast of Oman. The Pacific Zircon was "hit by a projectile approximately 150 miles off the coast of Oman ... on 15 November," Singapore-based firm Eastern Pacific Shipping which operates the vessel said in a statement, adding that there were no reports of casualties or any leakage of the cargo. "There is some minor damage to the vessel's hull but no spillage of cargo or water ingress," said the company which is owned by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer -- one of two sons of shipping magnate Sammy Ofer, who died in 2011. The tanker was carrying 42,000 tonnes of gas oil and bound for Buenos Aires, according to Samir Madani, co-founder of website TankerTrackers.com, The Bahrain-based United States Fifth Fleet said it was "aware of the incident".

Ukraine Shares Video Demonstrating How It Shot Down 73 Russian Cruise Missiles

International Business Times

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (MOD) has shared footage of what appeared to be an air defense system destroying an object amid reports that Ukraine was able to shoot down more than 70 Russian cruise missiles in one day. Russian forces launched about 100 missiles on Ukraine Tuesday, Ukrinform reported, citing Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat. Russia's previous heaviest attack was on Oct. 10, which involved 84 projectiles. Ukrainian air defenses were able to destroy 73 of the Russian cruise missiles, 10 Iranian-made Shahed 131 or 136 drones as well as one Orion unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during the most recent bombardment. "This is how our air defenses shot down 73 cruise missiles today," the MOD said in a post that included footage of what appeared to be an air defense system destroying an object.
