What's the Deal With the Mysterious Drone Attack on Putin?

Slate

So, who fired two drones at the Kremlin in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, and what does the act say about the course of the war in Ukraine? The whole business is a mystery, and may remain so forever, except to those who did the deed. The two questions are, of course, related; the intended impact on the war depends on who launched the weapons. But there might also be separate impacts, depending on who the combatants think fired the shots. So, it may be worth scurrying down the rabbit holes of straight or madcap logic to examine the possibilities.

Ukraine war: US denies masterminding Moscow drone attack

BBC News

The ICC has issued an arrest warrant for President Putin for alleged war crimes in Ukraine. It says he is responsible for war crimes during the Ukraine war, which includes the unlawful deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia. But it has no mandate to prosecute the crime of aggression.

Alleged Putin assassination is 'false flag' orchestrated to bolster Russia's war effort, experts claim

FOX News

Video appeared to show a drone being shot down over the Kremlin Wednesday, in what Russia says was an assassination attempt against President Vladimir Putin. Experts have accused Russia of staging a false-flag operation to justify increased mobilization, with a warning that more such attacks could occur in the coming months. "The alleged strike on Putin's residence in the Kremlin is likely a false flag operation orchestrated by Russian intelligence and security services and authorized by Putin himself," Rebekah Koffler, strategic military intelligence analyst and former DIA intel officer, told Fox News Digital. Russian government officials on Wednesday claimed that Ukrainian forces attempted to kill President Vladimir Putin with a failed drone attack. Video released by Russian media showed a small explosion over the president's residence at the Kremlin compound, which officials say were attacks by two drones that were disabled by defense systems, with no injuries or damage to the residence reported.

'Ludicrous': US denies involvement in Moscow drone attack

Al Jazeera

Washington, DC – The United States has dismissed as "ludicrous" Russia's claim that it was responsible for a drone attack against the Kremlin, an incident that risks inflaming international tensions. White House National Security spokesman John Kirby denied on Thursday any US involvement in the attack on Wednesday, which Moscow said targeted President Vladimir Putin. Kirby stressed that Washington is not even aware of the details of what happened. The United States had nothing to do with this," Kirby told CNN. "We don't even know exactly what happened here, but I can assure you the United States had no role in it whatsoever." Earlier on Thursday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the US, a key ally of Ukraine, was "undoubtedly" behind the attack.

This past week: What happened in the Russia-Ukraine war?

Al Jazeera

Drones, missiles and cross-border artillery took centre stage during the 62nd week of Russia's war in Ukraine, as the 63rd began with a dramatic allegation from Russia – that Ukraine made an attempt on President Vladimir Putin's life. Ukraine may have targeted Russian fuel depots – a possible preamble to its expected counteroffensive. Russia, meanwhile, sharply intensified strikes against Ukrainian civilians, claiming dozens of lives. Ukraine was likely responsible for explosions in Kozacha Bay, near Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula, where the Russian Black Sea Fleet has a base, on April 29. Footage showed a massive black mushroom cloud rising from a fuel tank park.

Russian drone attack in Ukraine after oil refinery targeted

Al Jazeera

Russia has blamed Ukraine for setting ablaze one of its oil refineries, while Kyiv has accused Moscow of launching dozens of overnight strikes by unmanned aerial vehicles for the second day running. The targeting of the fuel facility on Thursday occurred at the Ilsky refinery near the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in the Krasnodar region, Russia's TASS news agency reported citing local emergency services. A fuel reservoir was on fire, it said, but gave no further details. A day earlier, a fuel depot further to the west caught fire near a bridge linking Russia's mainland with the occupied Crimean Peninsula. "A second turbulent night for our emergency services," Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev wrote on Telegram, confirming tanks with oil products were set ablaze.

Drones becoming indispensable for Indo-Pacific navies

The Japan Times

Singapore – With Indo-Pacific countries ramping up defense spending, especially on naval capabilities, particular attention is being given to assets that will become core elements in next-generation naval fleets: unmanned systems. Commonly known as drones, these systems come in all shapes and sizes and can be used on land, in the air and at sea, particularly in inhospitable or dangerous environments. They are designed to minimize human losses while substantially adding to a force's capabilities, which is why they are often referred to as force multipliers. Guidance & Control Networks for Time-Optimal Quadcopter Flight

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Reaching fast and autonomous flight requires computationally efficient and robust algorithms. To this end, we train Guidance & Control Networks to approximate optimal control policies ranging from energy-optimal to time-optimal flight. We show that the policies become more difficult to learn the closer we get to the time-optimal 'bang-bang' control profile. We also assess the importance of knowing the maximum angular rotor velocity of the quadcopter and show that over- or underestimating this limit leads to less robust flight. We propose an algorithm to identify the current maximum angular rotor velocity onboard and a network that adapts its policy based on the identified limit. Finally, we extend previous work on Guidance & Control Networks by learning to take consecutive waypoints into account. We fly a 4x3m track in similar lap times as the differential-flatness-based minimum snap benchmark controller while benefiting from the flexibility that Guidance & Control Networks offer.

State Department 'unable to confirm' video purporting to show drone attack on Kremlin

FOX News

Video appeared to show a drone being shot down over the Kremlin Wednesday, in what Russia says was an assassination attempt against President Vladimir Putin. The State Department says that it's "unable to confirm" the authenticity of a video purporting to show a drone attack on the Kremlin. State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel was responding to claims from Russian government officials who said that Ukrainian forces attempted to kill President Vladimir Putin by a failed drone attack. "We are aware of these, but unable to confirm the authenticity of this," Patel said during a press conference Wednesday. "We're continuing to assess this and confirm the authenticity."
