A drone strike in Odesa shatters a family's life

The Japan Times

In the photograph, Anna Haidarzhy and her 4-month-old son, Tymofii, are barely visible under the bloodstained blanket. They lie in the rubble, at the feet of rescue workers in black and fluorescent uniforms. Just two arms, one from the mother, 31, one from her son, can be seen sticking out of the blanket. "It looked like they were saying goodbye," one of the rescuers, Serhii Mudrenko, said of the image. Their bodies were found in the smoking ruins of an apartment block hit in a Russian drone attack in March in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa that killed 12 people.

FlyNeRF: NeRF-Based Aerial Mapping for High-Quality 3D Scene Reconstruction

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Current methods for 3D reconstruction and environmental mapping frequently face challenges in achieving high precision, highlighting the need for practical and effective solutions. In response to this issue, our study introduces FlyNeRF, a system integrating Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) with drone-based data acquisition for high-quality 3D reconstruction. Utilizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for capturing images and corresponding spatial coordinates, the obtained data is subsequently used for the initial NeRF-based 3D reconstruction of the environment. Further evaluation of the reconstruction render quality is accomplished by the image evaluation neural network developed within the scope of our system. According to the results of the image evaluation module, an autonomous algorithm determines the position for additional image capture, thereby improving the reconstruction quality. The neural network introduced for render quality assessment demonstrates an accuracy of 97%. Furthermore, our adaptive methodology enhances the overall reconstruction quality, resulting in an average improvement of 2.5 dB in Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) for the 10% quantile. The FlyNeRF demonstrates promising results, offering advancements in such fields as environmental monitoring, surveillance, and digital twins, where high-fidelity 3D reconstructions are crucial.

US imposes new sanctions on Iran after attack on Israel

Al Jazeera

The administration of United States President Joe Biden has imposed new sanctions on Iran in response to its missile and drone attack on Israel, as tensions mount over the possibility of further escalation in the Middle East. In a statement on Thursday, Biden said the sanctions targeted "leaders and entities connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's Defense Ministry, and the Iranian government's missile and drone program that enabled" the April 13 attack on Israel. "As I discussed with my fellow G7 [Group of Seven] leaders the morning after the attack, we are committed to acting collectively to increase economic pressure on Iran," the US president said. "And our allies and partners have or will issue additional sanctions and measures to restrict Iran's destabilizing military programs." Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel in the early hours on Sunday, in retaliation for the deadly bombing of the Iranian consulate in Syria's capital, Damascus, earlier this month.

Automated Real-Time Inspection in Indoor and Outdoor 3D Environments with Cooperative Aerial Robots

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This work introduces a cooperative inspection system designed to efficiently control and coordinate a team of distributed heterogeneous UAV agents for the inspection of 3D structures in cluttered, unknown spaces. Our proposed approach employs a two-stage innovative methodology. Initially, it leverages the complementary sensing capabilities of the robots to cooperatively map the unknown environment. It then generates optimized, collision-free inspection paths, thereby ensuring comprehensive coverage of the structure's surface area. The effectiveness of our system is demonstrated through qualitative and quantitative results from extensive Gazebo-based simulations that closely replicate real-world inspection scenarios, highlighting its ability to thoroughly inspect real-world-like 3D structures.

Attack by Hezbollah Injures 14 Israeli Soldiers in Border Village

NYT > Middle East

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a cross-border drone and missile attack in northern Israel on Wednesday that the Israeli military said had injured 14 soldiers, six of them severely. It was one of the most damaging attacks in recent months by Hezbollah, Iran's most powerful regional proxy, in its continuing clashes with Israel. The attack came a day after Israel's targeted killing of two Hezbollah commanders as fears continue to grow of a broader conflict between Israel and Tehran, which mounted a wide aerial attack on Israel over the weekend. An internal Israeli army memo said an initial investigation found that Hezbollah had fired two anti-tank rockets at an Israeli Bedouin border village, Arab al-Aramshe, before dispatching an exploding drone. An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on the memo.

Tesla's Cybertruck disaster: Insider reveals 'serious safety issues' behind scenes of EV rollout - as drone footage shows hundreds of unfinished trucks backed up at Texas factory

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Customer reports that Tesla has halted deliveries for its futuristic Cybertruck amid allegedly dangerous safety issues with its gas pedal come as no surprise to one former insider. 'After I left, it got worse,' said Balan, who is suing her former boss Elon Musk's electric car company for defamation. 'I have quite a few people that are right now in Tesla,' Balan said. 'They brought some serious safety issues to my attention.' New Cybertruck owners have described its gas pedal as a'deathtrap,' demonstrating how the pedal cover can slide off the accelerator and become snagged on the carpet, locking it in place and spurring the car to accelerate at top speed.

Ukraine city hit with Russian missiles, killing at least 14 people and leaving many more civilians wounded

FOX News

Video captures the moment and aftermath of what appears to be a drone, allegedly of Ukrainian origin, striking Russian drone production facility. Russian officials claimed that only a worker's dormitory was hit. Three Russian missiles slammed into a downtown area of the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv on Wednesday, hitting an eight-floor apartment building and killing at least 14 people, authorities said. At least 61 people, including two children, were wounded in the morning attack, Ukrainian emergency services said. Chernihiv lies about 90 miles north of the capital, Kyiv, near the border with Russia and Belarus, and has a population of around 250,000 people.

Ukraine alleges Russia increasingly using tear gas illegally in battle

FOX News

The river in the small city of Penza suddenly turned green, residents said. The Ukrainian infantryman, call sign "Ray", said he quickly pulled on his gas mask after a Russian drone flying above his trench on the eastern front dropped a tear gas grenade. "It's like pepper spray, it makes your eyes tear up. It's not lethal, but it disturbs and knocks you out. It makes it very difficult to carry out your duties once you've inhaled it," he told Reuters of the attack he said he experienced in January.

How well could Iran defend itself against a potential Israeli attack?

Al Jazeera

Tehran, Iran – Israel has pledged to "exact a price" from Iran in response to missile and drone attacks launched by Tehran in retaliation to the deadly bombing of its consulate in Syria at the beginning of this month. Israel's war cabinet has met several times to debate a course of action to complement a diplomatic push against Iran since Saturday's unprecedented direct attacks on Israel, with Israeli army chief of staff Herzi Halevi saying a military response is certain. Iranian President Raisi threatened a "massive and harsh response" on Wednesday if Israel decides to launch a direct military assault on Iranian soil. So how effectively can Iran defend itself if such an attack occurs? For decades, Iran has increasingly insisted on relying on its local capabilities when it comes to its economy, but a similar push can also be seen in its military sector.
