President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration can't come soon enough. We need an overhaul of our drone defenses nationwide. Our national security infrastructure is not set up to defend against what's coming.

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., said he is "frustrated" by the government's lack of transparency surrounding the recent drone sightings in his state and surrounding areas in the mid-Atlantic region. On Capitol Hill on Thursday, the senator said that he has issued a letter asking for more information because Americans should be aware of what is happening in the skies. "I've been a little frustrated," he told reporters. "There hasn't been enough transparency letting people know what's happening. It's allowing a lot of potentially misinformation to spread, or at least fear. We should know what's going on over our skies."

New Jersey residents frustrated with a lack of answers regarding dozens of potential drone sightings in the skies above their homes are threatening to take action on their own if the government doesn't start providing answers. James Ward, a Jersey Shore Realtor, shared video on Facebook that he said shows "SUV-size drones" above Island Beach State Park taken Sunday. It's difficult to judge their size in the clip, which shows a number of lights hovering in the sky. "Dozens of SUV-size drones in all directions," the caption says. "Emerging at same time and flying over the ocean and then heading in different directions – what do you think?" "A good shotgun will fix that problem," one commenter replied.

Several drones were allegedly spotted in the skies above a Connecticut suburb on Thursday night, adding to recent drone sightings that have perplexed locals and raised questions about possible national security and public safety concerns. A social media user on X posted videos of possible drones in Fairfield, 55 miles northeast of New York City. Drones hovering over New Jersey and near Staten Island, New York in recent weeks have raised concerns amid a lack of clarity over their origin. A social media user said she filmed several drones hovering over Fairfield, Connecticut on Thursday night.


Magnisketch Drone Control

The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for aerial tasks and environmental manipulation is increasingly desired. This can be demonstrated via art tasks. This paper presents the development of Magnasketch, capable of translating image inputs into art on a magnetic drawing board via a Bitcraze Crazyflie 2.0 quadrotor. Optimal trajectories were generated using a Model Predictive Control (MPC) formulation newly incorporating magnetic force dynamics. A Z-compliant magnetic drawing apparatus was designed for the quadrotor. Experimental results of the novel controller tested against the existing Position High Level Commander showed comparable performance. Although slightly outperformed in terms of error, with average errors of 3.9 cm, 4.4 cm, and 0.5 cm in x, y, and z respectively, the Magnasketch controller produced smoother drawings with the added benefit of full state control.


BatDeck -- Ultra Low-power Ultrasonic Ego-velocity Estimation and Obstacle Avoidance on Nano-drones

Nano-drones, with their small, lightweight design, are ideal for confined-space rescue missions and inherently safe for human interaction. However, their limited payload restricts the critical sensing needed for ego-velocity estimation and obstacle detection to single-bean laser-based time-of-flight (ToF) and low-resolution optical sensors. Although those sensors have demonstrated good performance, they fail in some complex real-world scenarios, especially when facing transparent or reflective surfaces (ToFs) or when lacking visual features (optical-flow sensors). Taking inspiration from bats, this paper proposes a novel two-way ranging-based method for ego-velocity estimation and obstacle avoidance based on down-and-forward facing ultra-low-power ultrasonic sensors, which improve the performance when the drone faces reflective materials or navigates in complete darkness. Our results demonstrate that our new sensing system achieves a mean square error of 0.019 m/s on ego-velocity estimation and allows exploration for a flight time of 8 minutes while covering 136 m on average in a challenging environment with transparent and reflective obstacles. We also compare ultrasonic and laser-based ToF sensing techniques for obstacle avoidance, as well as optical flow and ultrasonic-based techniques for ego-velocity estimation, denoting how these systems and methods can be complemented to enhance the robustness of nano-drone operations.


DNN Task Assignment in UAV Networks: A Generative AI Enhanced Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Approach

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) possess high mobility and flexible deployment capabilities, prompting the development of UAVs for various application scenarios within the Internet of Things (IoT). The unique capabilities of UAVs give rise to increasingly critical and complex tasks in uncertain and potentially harsh environments. The substantial amount of data generated from these applications necessitates processing and analysis through deep neural networks (DNNs). However, UAVs encounter challenges due to their limited computing resources when managing DNN models. This paper presents a joint approach that combines multiple-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) and generative diffusion models (GDM) for assigning DNN tasks to a UAV swarm, aimed at reducing latency from task capture to result output. To address these challenges, we first consider the task size of the target area to be inspected and the shortest flying path as optimization constraints, employing a greedy algorithm to resolve the subproblem with a focus on minimizing the UAV's flying path and the overall system cost. In the second stage, we introduce a novel DNN task assignment algorithm, termed GDM-MADDPG, which utilizes the reverse denoising process of GDM to replace the actor network in multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG). This approach generates specific DNN task assignment actions based on agents' observations in a dynamic environment. Simulation results indicate that our algorithm performs favorably compared to benchmarks in terms of path planning, Age of Information (AoI), energy consumption, and task load balancing.

A Chinese man has been arrested for allegedly flying a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base, as the FBI investigates mysterious drones in New Jersey. Yinpiao Zhou, 39, a Chinese National now living in Brentwood, California, was charged with failure to register an aircraft not providing transportation and violation of national defense airspace. Zhou was arrested Monday at San Francisco International Airport prior to boarding a China-bound flight and made his initial appearance Tuesday in United States District Court in San Francisco. He is in federal custody pending prosecutors' appeal of a federal magistrate judge's decision to release him. No plea was taken and his arraignment is expected to be scheduled in US District Court in Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

"There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there's no so-called mother ship launching drones towards the United States," said Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh. She added there is "no evidence" to suggest the drones are "the work of a foreign adversary."
