Novelty Heuristics, Multi-Queue Search, and Portfolios for Numeric Planning

Heuristic search is a powerful approach for solving planning problems and numeric planning is no exception. In this paper, we boost the performance of heuristic search for numeric planning with various powerful techniques orthogonal to improving heuristic informedness: numeric novelty heuristics, the Manhattan distance heuristic, and exploring the use of multi-queue search and portfolios for combining heuristics.


Interactive-FAR:Interactive, Fast and Adaptable Routing for Navigation Among Movable Obstacles in Complex Unknown Environments

This paper introduces a real-time algorithm for navigating complex unknown environments cluttered with movable obstacles. Our algorithm achieves fast, adaptable routing by actively attempting to manipulate obstacles during path planning and adjusting the global plan from sensor feedback. The main contributions include an improved dynamic Directed Visibility Graph (DV-graph) for rapid global path searching, a real-time interaction planning method that adapts online from new sensory perceptions, and a comprehensive framework designed for interactive navigation in complex unknown or partially known environments. Our algorithm is capable of replanning the global path in several milliseconds. It can also attempt to move obstacles, update their affordances, and adapt strategies accordingly. Extensive experiments validate that our algorithm reduces the travel time by 33%, achieves up to 49% higher path efficiency, and runs faster than traditional methods by orders of magnitude in complex environments. It has been demonstrated to be the most efficient solution in terms of speed and efficiency for interactive navigation in environments of such complexity. We also open-source our code in the docker demo to facilitate future research.


Proposed modified computational model for the amoeba-inspired combinatorial optimization machine

In the modern information society, conventional Neumann-type computers face a serious problem of increased complexity and cost in computation. While the information processing capacity of computers is predicted to reach its limits because of the limit of Moore's law and the von Neumann bottleneck, the required computing power is increasing exponentially. Under these circumstances, new efficient domain-specific computational architectures beyond the von Neumann type are demanded [1]. The serious problem particularly appears in combinatorial optimization problems [2]. Recently, the Ising machine has been proposed as a solution and its practical applications are being investigated [3-7]. There, the combinatorial optimization problem is mapped onto the ground-state search of the Ising model, which is originally a mathematical model of magnetic materials [8, 9]. On the other hand, research has been intensively conducted to construct combinatorial optimization machines that mimic the information processing of living organisms. This is because organisms often perform sophisticated information processing such as image recognitions, sound recognitions, and optimizations with low energy consumption. One of the simplest and most useful machines of such kinds is a computing technology inspired by the information processing of the amoeboid organism [10, 11].


Graph Reinforcement Learning for Combinatorial Optimization: A Survey and Unifying Perspective

Graphs are a natural representation for systems based on relations between connected entities. Combinatorial optimization problems, which arise when considering an objective function related to a process of interest on discrete structures, are often challenging due to the rapid growth of the solution space. The trial-and-error paradigm of Reinforcement Learning has recently emerged as a promising alternative to traditional methods, such as exact algorithms and (meta)heuristics, for discovering better decision-making strategies in a variety of disciplines including chemistry, computer science, and statistics. Despite the fact that they arose in markedly different fields, these techniques share significant commonalities. Therefore, we set out to synthesize this work in a unifying perspective that we term Graph Reinforcement Learning, interpreting it as a constructive decision-making method for graph problems. After covering the relevant technical background, we review works along the dividing line of whether the goal is to optimize graph structure given a process of interest, or to optimize the outcome of the process itself under fixed graph structure. Finally, we discuss the common challenges facing the field and open research questions. In contrast with other surveys, the present work focuses on non-canonical graph problems for which performant algorithms are typically not known and Reinforcement Learning is able to provide efficient and effective solutions.


Efficient and Robust Point Cloud Registration via Heuristics-guided Parameter Search

Estimating the rigid transformation with 6 degrees of freedom based on a putative 3D correspondence set is a crucial procedure in point cloud registration. Existing correspondence identification methods usually lead to large outlier ratios ($>$ 95 $\%$ is common), underscoring the significance of robust registration methods. Many researchers turn to parameter search-based strategies (e.g., Branch-and-Bround) for robust registration. Although related methods show high robustness, their efficiency is limited to the high-dimensional search space. This paper proposes a heuristics-guided parameter search strategy to accelerate the search while maintaining high robustness. We first sample some correspondences (i.e., heuristics) and then just need to sequentially search the feasible regions that make each sample an inlier. Our strategy largely reduces the search space and can guarantee accuracy with only a few inlier samples, therefore enjoying an excellent trade-off between efficiency and robustness. Since directly parameterizing the 6-dimensional nonlinear feasible region for efficient search is intractable, we construct a three-stage decomposition pipeline to reparameterize the feasible region, resulting in three lower-dimensional sub-problems that are easily solvable via our strategy. Besides reducing the searching dimension, our decomposition enables the leverage of 1-dimensional interval stabbing at all three stages for searching acceleration. Moreover, we propose a valid sampling strategy to guarantee our sampling effectiveness, and a compatibility verification setup to further accelerate our search. Extensive experiments on both simulated and real-world datasets demonstrate that our approach exhibits comparable robustness with state-of-the-art methods while achieving a significant efficiency boost.


Towards Building a Robust Toxicity Predictor

Recent NLP literature pays little attention to the robustness of toxicity language predictors, while these systems are most likely to be used in adversarial contexts. This paper presents a novel adversarial attack, \texttt{ToxicTrap}, introducing small word-level perturbations to fool SOTA text classifiers to predict toxic text samples as benign. ToxicTrap exploits greedy based search strategies to enable fast and effective generation of toxic adversarial examples. Two novel goal function designs allow ToxicTrap to identify weaknesses in both multiclass and multilabel toxic language detectors. Our empirical results show that SOTA toxicity text classifiers are indeed vulnerable to the proposed attacks, attaining over 98\% attack success rates in multilabel cases. We also show how a vanilla adversarial training and its improved version can help increase robustness of a toxicity detector even against unseen attacks.


Tree Search-Based Policy Optimization under Stochastic Execution Delay

The standard formulation of Markov decision processes (MDPs) assumes that the agent's decisions are executed immediately. However, in numerous realistic applications such as robotics or healthcare, actions are performed with a delay whose value can even be stochastic. In this work, we introduce stochastic delayed execution MDPs, a new formalism addressing random delays without resorting to state augmentation. We show that given observed delay values, it is sufficient to perform a policy search in the class of Markov policies in order to reach optimal performance, thus extending the deterministic fixed delay case. Armed with this insight, we devise DEZ, a model-based algorithm that optimizes over the class of Markov policies. Thus, it handles delayed execution while preserving the sample efficiency of EfficientZero. Through a series of experiments on the Atari suite, we demonstrate that although the previous baseline outperforms the naive method in scenarios with constant delay, it underperforms in the face of stochastic delays. In contrast, our approach significantly outperforms the baselines, for both constant and stochastic delays. The conventional Markov decision process (MDP) framework commonly assumes that all of the information necessary for the next decision step is available in real time: the agent's current state is immediately observed, its chosen action instantly actuated, and the corresponding reward feedback concurrently perceived (Puterman, 2014). However, these input signals are often delayed in real-world applications such as robotics (Mahmood et al., 2018), healthcare (Politi et al., 2022), or autonomous systems, where they can manifest in different ways.


Electric Vehicle Routing Problem for Emergency Power Supply: Towards Telecom Base Station Relief

As a telecom provider, our company has a critical mission to maintain telecom services even during power outages. To accomplish the mission, it is essential to maintain the power of the telecom base stations. Here we consider a solution where electric vehicles (EVs) directly supply power to base stations by traveling to their locations. The goal is to find EV routes that minimize both the total travel distance of all EVs and the number of downed base stations. In this paper, we formulate this routing problem as a new variant of the Electric Vehicle Routing Problem (EVRP) and propose a solver that combines a rule-based vehicle selector and a reinforcement learning (RL)-based node selector. The rule of the vehicle selector ensures the exact environmental states when the selected EV starts to move. In addition, the node selection by the RL model enables fast route generation, which is critical in emergencies. We evaluate our solver on both synthetic datasets and real datasets. The results show that our solver outperforms baselines in terms of the objective value and computation time. Moreover, we analyze the generalization and scalability of our solver, demonstrating the capability toward unseen settings and large-scale problems. Transform then Explore: a Simple and Effective Technique for Exploratory Combinatorial Optimization with Reinforcement Learning

Many complex problems encountered in both production and daily life can be conceptualized as combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) over graphs. Recent years, reinforcement learning (RL) based models have emerged as a promising direction, which treat the COPs solving as a heuristic learning problem. However, current finite-horizon-MDP based RL models have inherent limitations. They are not allowed to explore adquately for improving solutions at test time, which may be necessary given the complexity of NP-hard optimization tasks. Some recent attempts solve this issue by focusing on reward design and state feature engineering, which are tedious and ad-hoc. In this work, we instead propose a much simpler but more effective technique, named gauge transformation (GT). The technique is originated from physics, but is very effective in enabling RL agents to explore to continuously improve the solutions during test. Morever, GT is very simple, which can be implemented with less than 10 lines of Python codes, and can be applied to a vast majority of RL models. Experimentally, we show that traditional RL models with GT technique produce the state-of-the-art performances on the MaxCut problem. Furthermore, since GT is independent of any RL models, it can be seamlessly integrated into various RL frameworks, paving the way of these models for more effective explorations in the solving of general COPs.


A Survey of Route Recommendations: Methods, Applications, and Opportunities

Nowadays, with advanced information technologies deployed citywide, large data volumes and powerful computational resources are intelligentizing modern city development. As an important part of intelligent transportation, route recommendation and its applications are widely used, directly influencing citizens` travel habits. Developing smart and efficient travel routes based on big data (possibly multi-modal) has become a central challenge in route recommendation research. Our survey offers a comprehensive review of route recommendation work based on urban computing. It is organized by the following three parts: 1) Methodology-wise. We categorize a large volume of traditional machine learning and modern deep learning methods. Also, we discuss their historical relations and reveal the edge-cutting progress. 2) Application\-wise. We present numerous novel applications related to route commendation within urban computing scenarios. 3) We discuss current problems and challenges and envision several promising research directions. We believe that this survey can help relevant researchers quickly familiarize themselves with the current state of route recommendation research and then direct them to future research trends.
