Abstract: Prior work has extensively studied the latent space structure of GANs for unconditional image synthesis, enabling global editing of generated images by the unsupervised discovery of interpretable latent directions. However, the discovery of latent directions for conditional GANs for semantic image synthesis (SIS) has remained unexplored. In this work, we specifically focus on addressing this gap. We propose a novel optimization method for finding spatially disentangled class-specific directions in the latent space of pretrained SIS models. We show that the latent directions found by our method can effectively control the local appearance of semantic classes, e.g., changing their internal structure, texture or color independently from each other.


Active manifolds, stratifications, and convergence to local minima in nonsmooth optimization

We show that the subgradient method converges only to local minimizers when applied to generic Lipschitz continuous and subdifferentially regular functions that are definable in an o-minimal structure. At a high level, the argument we present is appealingly transparent: we interpret the nonsmooth dynamics as an approximate Riemannian gradient method on a certain distinguished submanifold that captures the nonsmooth activity of the function. In the process, we develop new regularity conditions in nonsmooth analysis that parallel the stratification conditions of Whitney, Kuo, and Verdier and extend stochastic processes techniques of Pemantle.


ATM-R: An Adaptive Tradeoff Model with Reference Points for Constrained Multiobjective Evolutionary Optimization

The goal of constrained multiobjective evolutionary optimization is to obtain a set of well-converged and welldistributed feasible solutions. To complete this goal, there should be a tradeoff among feasibility, diversity, and convergence. However, it is nontrivial to balance these three elements simultaneously by using a single tradeoff model since the importance of each element varies in different evolutionary phases. As an alternative, we adapt different tradeoff models in different phases and propose a novel algorithm called ATM-R. In the infeasible phase, ATM-R takes the tradeoff between diversity and feasibility into account, aiming to move the population toward feasible regions from diverse search directions. In the semi-feasible phase, ATM-R promotes the transition from "the tradeoff between feasibility and diversity" to "the tradeoff between diversity and convergence", which can facilitate the discovering of enough feasible regions and speed up the search for the feasible Pareto optima in succession. In the feasible phase, the tradeoff between diversity and convergence is considered to attain a set of well-converged and well-distributed feasible solutions. It is worth noting that the merits of reference points are leveraged in ATM-R to accomplish these tradeoff models. Also, in ATM-R, a multiphase mating selection strategy is developed to generate promising solutions beneficial to different evolutionary phases. Systemic experiments on a wide range of benchmark test functions demonstrate that ATM-R is effective and competitive, compared against five state-of-the-art constrained multiobjective optimization evolutionary algorithms.


Efficient Approximation of Gromov-Wasserstein Distance Using Importance Sparsification

As a valid metric of metric-measure spaces, Gromov-Wasserstein (GW) distance has shown the potential for matching problems of structured data like point clouds and graphs. However, its application in practice is limited due to the high computational complexity. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel importance sparsification method, called \textsc{Spar-GW}, to approximate GW distance efficiently. In particular, instead of considering a dense coupling matrix, our method leverages a simple but effective sampling strategy to construct a sparse coupling matrix and update it with few computations. The proposed \textsc{Spar-GW} method is applicable to the GW distance with arbitrary ground cost, and it reduces the complexity from $O(n^4)$ to $O(n^{2+\delta})$ for an arbitrary small $\delta>0$. Theoretically, the convergence and consistency of the proposed estimation for GW distance are established under mild regularity conditions. In addition, this method can be extended to approximate the variants of GW distance, including the entropic GW distance, the fused GW distance, and the unbalanced GW distance. Experiments show the superiority of our \textsc{Spar-GW} to state-of-the-art methods in both synthetic and real-world tasks.


Federated Learning for Energy Constrained IoT devices: A systematic mapping study

Federated Machine Learning (Fed ML) is a new distributed machine learning technique applied to collaboratively train a global model using clients local data without transmitting it. Nodes only send parameter updates (e.g., weight updates in the case of neural networks), which are fused together by the server to build the global model. By not divulging node data, Fed ML guarantees its confidentiality, a crucial aspect of network security, which enables it to be used in the context of data-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile applications, such as smart Geo-location and the smart grid. However, most IoT devices are particularly energy constrained, which raises the need to optimize the Fed ML process for efficient training tasks and optimized power consumption. In this paper, we conduct, to the best of our knowledge, the first Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) on Fed ML optimization techniques for energy-constrained IoT devices. From a total of more than 800 papers, we select 67 that satisfy our criteria and give a structured overview of the field using a set of carefully chosen research questions. Finally, we attempt to provide an analysis of the energy-constrained Fed ML state of the art and try to outline some potential recommendations for the research community.


Do Performance Aspirations Matter for Guiding Software Configuration Tuning?

Configurable software systems can be tuned for better performance. Leveraging on some Pareto optimizers, recent work has shifted from tuning for a single, time-related performance objective to two intrinsically different objectives that assess distinct performance aspects of the system, each with varying aspirations. Before we design better optimizers, a crucial engineering decision to make therein is how to handle the performance requirements with clear aspirations in the tuning process. For this, the community takes two alternative optimization models: either quantifying and incorporating the aspirations into the search objectives that guide the tuning, or not considering the aspirations during the search but purely using them in the later decision-making process only. However, despite being a crucial decision that determines how an optimizer can be designed and tailored, there is a rather limited understanding of which optimization model should be chosen under what particular circumstance, and why. In this paper, we seek to close this gap. Firstly, we do that through a review of over 426 papers in the literature and 14 real-world requirements datasets. Drawing on these, we then conduct a comprehensive empirical study that covers 15 combinations of the state-of-the-art performance requirement patterns, four types of aspiration space, three Pareto optimizers, and eight real-world systems/environments, leading to 1,296 cases of investigation. We found that (1) the realism of aspirations is the key factor that determines whether they should be used to guide the tuning; (2) the given patterns and the position of the realistic aspirations in the objective landscape are less important for the choice, but they do matter to the extents of improvement; (3) the available tuning budget can also influence the choice for unrealistic aspirations but it is insignificant under realistic ones.


Learning-based Design and Control for Quadrupedal Robots with Parallel-Elastic Actuators

Parallel-elastic joints can improve the efficiency and strength of robots by assisting the actuators with additional torques. For these benefits to be realized, a spring needs to be carefully designed. However, designing robots is an iterative and tedious process, often relying on intuition and heuristics. We introduce a design optimization framework that allows us to co-optimize a parallel elastic knee joint and locomotion controller for quadrupedal robots with minimal human intuition. We design a parallel elastic joint and optimize its parameters with respect to the efficiency in a model-free fashion. In the first step, we train a design-conditioned policy using model-free Reinforcement Learning, capable of controlling the quadruped in the predefined range of design parameters. Afterwards, we use Bayesian Optimization to find the best design using the policy. We use this framework to optimize the parallel-elastic spring parameters for the knee of our quadrupedal robot ANYmal together with the optimal controller. We evaluate the optimized design and controller in real-world experiments over various terrains. Our results show that the new system improves the torque-square efficiency of the robot by 33% compared to the baseline and reduces maximum joint torque by 30% without compromising tracking performance. The improved design resulted in 11% longer operation time on flat terrain.


Word Segmentation on Discovered Phone Units with Dynamic Programming and Self-Supervised Scoring

Recent work on unsupervised speech segmentation has used self-supervised models with phone and word segmentation modules that are trained jointly. This paper instead revisits an older approach to word segmentation: bottom-up phone-like unit discovery is performed first, and symbolic word segmentation is then performed on top of the discovered units (without influencing the lower level). To do this, I propose a new unit discovery model, a new symbolic word segmentation model, and then chain the two models to segment speech. Both models use dynamic programming to minimize segment costs from a self-supervised network with an additional duration penalty that encourages longer units. Concretely, for acoustic unit discovery, duration-penalized dynamic programming (DPDP) is used with a contrastive predictive coding model as the scoring network. For word segmentation, DPDP is applied with an autoencoding recurrent neural as the scoring network. The two models are chained in order to segment speech. This approach gives comparable word segmentation results to state-of-the-art joint self-supervised segmentation models on an English benchmark. On French, Mandarin, German and Wolof data, it outperforms previous systems on the ZeroSpeech benchmarks. Analysis shows that the chained DPDP system segments shorter filler words well, but longer words might require some external top-down signal.

Abstract: In this paper, we study randomized and cyclic coordinate descent for convex unconstrained optimization problems. We improve the known convergence rates in some cases by using the numerical semidefinite programming performance estimation method. Abstract:: Convex function constrained optimization has received growing research interests lately. For a special convex problem which has strongly convex function constraints, we develop a new accelerated primal-dual first-order method that obtains an $\Ocal(1/\sqrt{\vep})$ complexity bound, improving the $\Ocal(1/{\vep})$ result for the state-of-the-art first-order methods. The key ingredient to our development is some novel techniques to progressively estimate the strong convexity of the Lagrangian function, which enables adaptive step-size selection and faster convergence performance.


Fully Dynamic Online Selection through Online Contention Resolution Schemes

We study fully dynamic online selection problems in an adversarial/stochastic setting that includes Bayesian online selection, prophet inequalities, posted price mechanisms, and stochastic probing problems subject to combinatorial constraints. In the classical ``incremental'' version of the problem, selected elements remain active until the end of the input sequence. On the other hand, in the fully dynamic version of the problem, elements stay active for a limited time interval, and then leave. This models, for example, the online matching of tasks to workers with task/worker-dependent working times, and sequential posted pricing of perishable goods. A successful approach to online selection problems in the adversarial setting is given by the notion of Online Contention Resolution Scheme (OCRS), that uses a priori information to formulate a linear relaxation of the underlying optimization problem, whose optimal fractional solution is rounded online for any adversarial order of the input sequence. Our main contribution is providing a general method for constructing an OCRS for fully dynamic online selection problems. Then, we show how to employ such OCRS to construct no-regret algorithms in a partial information model with semi-bandit feedback and adversarial inputs.
