OAFuser: Towards Omni-Aperture Fusion for Light Field Semantic Segmentation

Light field cameras, by harnessing the power of micro-lens array, are capable of capturing intricate angular and spatial details. This allows for acquiring complex light patterns and details from multiple angles, significantly enhancing the precision of image semantic segmentation, a critical aspect of scene interpretation in vision intelligence. However, the extensive angular information of light field cameras contains a large amount of redundant data, which is overwhelming for the limited hardware resources of intelligent vehicles. Besides, inappropriate compression leads to information corruption and data loss. To excavate representative information, we propose a new paradigm, Omni-Aperture Fusion model (OAFuser), which leverages dense context from the central view and discovers the angular information from sub-aperture images to generate a semantically consistent result. To avoid feature loss during network propagation and simultaneously streamline the redundant information from the light field camera, we present a simple yet very effective Sub-Aperture Fusion Module (SAFM) to embed sub-aperture images into angular features without any additional memory cost. Furthermore, to address the mismatched spatial information across viewpoints, we present a Center Angular Rectification Module (CARM) to realize feature resorting and prevent feature occlusion caused by asymmetric information. Our proposed OAFuser achieves state-of-the-art performance on the UrbanLF-Real and -Syn datasets and sets a new record of 84.93% in mIoU on the UrbanLF-Real Extended dataset, with a gain of +4.53%. FusionPlanner: A Multi-task Motion Planner for Mining Trucks via Multi-sensor Fusion

In recent years, significant achievements have been made in motion planning for intelligent vehicles. However, as a typical unstructured environment, open-pit mining attracts limited attention due to its complex operational conditions and adverse environmental factors. A comprehensive paradigm for unmanned transportation in open-pit mines is proposed in this research. Firstly, we propose a multi-task motion planning algorithm, called FusionPlanner, for autonomous mining trucks by the multi-sensor fusion method to adapt both lateral and longitudinal control tasks for unmanned transportation. Then, we develop a novel benchmark called MiningNav, which offers three validation approaches to evaluate the trustworthiness and robustness of well-trained algorithms in transportation roads of open-pit mines. Finally, we introduce the Parallel Mining Simulator (PMS), a new high-fidelity simulator specifically designed for open-pit mining scenarios. PMS enables the users to manage and control open-pit mine transportation from both the single-truck control and multi-truck scheduling perspectives. The performance of FusionPlanner is tested by MiningNav in PMS, and the empirical results demonstrate a significant reduction in the number of collisions and takeovers of our planner. We anticipate our unmanned transportation paradigm will bring mining trucks one step closer to trustworthiness and robustness in continuous round-the-clock unmanned transportation.


From Generalized Laughter to Personalized Chuckles: Unleashing the Power of Data Fusion in Subjective Humor Detection

The vast area of subjectivity in Natural Language Processing (NLP) poses a challenge to the solutions typically used in generalized tasks. As exploration in the scope of generalized NLP is much more advanced, it implies the tremendous gap that is still to be addressed amongst all feasible tasks where an opinion, taste, or feelings are inherent, thus creating a need for a solution, where a data fusion could take place. We have chosen the task of funniness, as it heavily relies on the sense of humor, which is fundamentally subjective. Our experiments across five personalized and four generalized datasets involving several personalized deep neural architectures have shown that the task of humor detection greatly benefits from the inclusion of personalized data in the training process. We tested five scenarios of training data fusion that focused on either generalized (majority voting) or personalized approaches to humor detection. The best results were obtained for the setup, in which all available personalized datasets were joined to train the personalized reasoning model. It boosted the prediction performance by up to approximately 35% of the macro F1 score. Such a significant gain was observed for all five personalized test sets. At the same time, the impact of the model's architecture was much less than the personalization itself. It seems that concatenating personalized datasets, even with the cost of normalizing the range of annotations across all datasets, if combined with the personalized models, results in an enormous increase in the performance of humor detection.


Self-supervised Adaptive Weighting for Cooperative Perception in V2V Communications

Perception of the driving environment is critical for collision avoidance and route planning to ensure driving safety. Cooperative perception has been widely studied as an effective approach to addressing the shortcomings of single-vehicle perception. However, the practical limitations of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications have not been adequately investigated. In particular, current cooperative fusion models rely on supervised models and do not address dynamic performance degradation caused by arbitrary channel impairments. In this paper, a self-supervised adaptive weighting model is proposed for intermediate fusion to mitigate the adverse effects of channel distortion. The performance of cooperative perception is investigated in different system settings. Rician fading and imperfect channel state information (CSI) are also considered. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed adaptive weighting algorithm significantly outperforms the benchmarks without weighting. Visualization examples validate that the proposed weighting algorithm can flexibly adapt to various channel conditions. Moreover, the adaptive weighting algorithm demonstrates good generalization to untrained channels and test datasets from different domains.


Achelous++: Power-Oriented Water-Surface Panoptic Perception Framework on Edge Devices based on Vision-Radar Fusion and Pruning of Heterogeneous Modalities

Urban water-surface robust perception serves as the foundation for intelligent monitoring of aquatic environments and the autonomous navigation and operation of unmanned vessels, especially in the context of waterway safety. It is worth noting that current multi-sensor fusion and multi-task learning models consume substantial power and heavily rely on high-power GPUs for inference. This contributes to increased carbon emissions, a concern that runs counter to the prevailing emphasis on environmental preservation and the pursuit of sustainable, low-carbon urban environments. In light of these concerns, this paper concentrates on low-power, lightweight, multi-task panoptic perception through the fusion of visual and 4D radar data, which is seen as a promising low-cost perception method. We propose a framework named Achelous++ that facilitates the development and comprehensive evaluation of multi-task water-surface panoptic perception models. Achelous++ can simultaneously execute five perception tasks with high speed and low power consumption, including object detection, object semantic segmentation, drivable-area segmentation, waterline segmentation, and radar point cloud semantic segmentation. Furthermore, to meet the demand for developers to customize models for real-time inference on low-performance devices, a novel multi-modal pruning strategy known as Heterogeneous-Aware SynFlow (HA-SynFlow) is proposed. Besides, Achelous++ also supports random pruning at initialization with different layer-wise sparsity, such as Uniform and Erdos-Renyi-Kernel (ERK). Overall, our Achelous++ framework achieves state-of-the-art performance on the WaterScenes benchmark, excelling in both accuracy and power efficiency compared to other single-task and multi-task models. A wearable Gait Assessment Method for Lumbar Disc Herniation Based on Adaptive Kalman Filtering

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a prevalent orthopedic condition in clinical practice. Inertial measurement unit sensors (IMUs) are an effective tool for monitoring and assessing gait impairment in patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). However, the current gait assessment of LDH focuses solely on single-source acceleration signal data, without considering the diversity of sensor data. It also overlooks the individual differences in motor function deterioration between the healthy and affected lower limbs in patients with LDH. To address this issue, we developed an LDH gait feature model that relies on multi-source adaptive Kalman data fusion of acceleration and angular velocity. We utilized an adaptive Kalman data fusion algorithm for acceleration and angular velocity to estimate the attitude angle and segment the gait phase. Two Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) were used to analyze the gait characteristics of patients with lumbar disc issues and healthy individuals. This analysis included 12 gait characteristics, such as gait spatiotemporal parameters, kinematic parameters, and expansibility index numbers. Statistical methods were employed to analyze the characteristic model and confirm the biological differences between the healthy affected side of LDH and healthy subjects. Finally, a classifier based on feature engineering was utilized to classify the gait patterns of the affected side of patients with lumbar disc disease and healthy subjects. This approach achieved a classification accuracy of 95.50%, enhancing the recognition of LDH and healthy gait patterns. It also provided effective gait feature sets and methods for assessing LDH clinically.


Learning Language-guided Adaptive Hyper-modality Representation for Multimodal Sentiment Analysis

Though Multimodal Sentiment Analysis (MSA) proves effective by utilizing rich information from multiple sources (e.g., language, video, and audio), the potential sentiment-irrelevant and conflicting information across modalities may hinder the performance from being further improved. To alleviate this, we present Adaptive Language-guided Multimodal Transformer (ALMT), which incorporates an Adaptive Hyper-modality Learning (AHL) module to learn an irrelevance/conflict-suppressing representation from visual and audio features under the guidance of language features at different scales. With the obtained hyper-modality representation, the model can obtain a complementary and joint representation through multimodal fusion for effective MSA. In practice, ALMT achieves state-of-the-art performance on several popular datasets (e.g., MOSI, MOSEI and CH-SIMS) and an abundance of ablation demonstrates the validity and necessity of our irrelevance/conflict suppression mechanism.


Multi-Granularity Framework for Unsupervised Representation Learning of Time Series

Representation learning plays a critical role in the analysis of time series data and has high practical value across a wide range of applications. including trend analysis, time series data retrieval and forecasting. In practice, data confusion is a significant issue as it can considerably impact the effectiveness and accuracy of data analysis, machine learning models and decision-making processes. In general, previous studies did not consider the variability at various levels of granularity, thus resulting in inadequate information utilization, which further exacerbated the issue of data confusion. This paper proposes an unsupervised framework to realize multi-granularity representation learning for time series. Specifically, we employed a cross-granularity transformer to develop an association between fine- and coarse-grained representations. In addition, we introduced a retrieval task as an unsupervised training task to learn the multi-granularity representation of time series. Moreover, a novel loss function was designed to obtain the comprehensive multi-granularity representation of the time series via unsupervised learning. The experimental results revealed that the proposed framework demonstrates significant advantages over alternative representation learning models.


More than Vanilla Fusion: a Simple, Decoupling-free, Attention Module for Multimodal Fusion Based on Signal Theory

The vanilla fusion methods still dominate a large percentage of mainstream audio-visual tasks. However, the effectiveness of vanilla fusion from a theoretical perspective is still worth discussing. Thus, this paper reconsiders the signal fused in the multimodal case from a bionics perspective and proposes a simple, plug-and-play, attention module for vanilla fusion based on fundamental signal theory and uncertainty theory. In addition, previous work on multimodal dynamic gradient modulation still relies on decoupling the modalities. So, a decoupling-free gradient modulation scheme has been designed in conjunction with the aforementioned attention module, which has various advantages over the decoupled one. Experiment results show that just a few lines of code can achieve up to 2.0% performance improvements to several multimodal classification methods. Finally, quantitative evaluation of other fusion tasks reveals the potential for additional application scenarios.


Non-contact Multimodal Indoor Human Monitoring Systems: A Survey

Indoor human monitoring systems leverage a wide range of sensors, including cameras, radio devices, and inertial measurement units, to collect extensive data from users and the environment. These sensors contribute diverse data modalities, such as video feeds from cameras, received signal strength indicators and channel state information from WiFi devices, and three-axis acceleration data from inertial measurement units. In this context, we present a comprehensive survey of multimodal approaches for indoor human monitoring systems, with a specific focus on their relevance in elderly care. Our survey primarily highlights non-contact technologies, particularly cameras and radio devices, as key components in the development of indoor human monitoring systems. Throughout this article, we explore well-established techniques for extracting features from multimodal data sources. Our exploration extends to methodologies for fusing these features and harnessing multiple modalities to improve the accuracy and robustness of machine learning models. Furthermore, we conduct comparative analysis across different data modalities in diverse human monitoring tasks and undertake a comprehensive examination of existing multimodal datasets. This extensive survey not only highlights the significance of indoor human monitoring systems but also affirms their versatile applications. In particular, we emphasize their critical role in enhancing the quality of elderly care, offering valuable insights into the development of non-contact monitoring solutions applicable to the needs of aging populations.
