Ontological Smart Contracts in OASIS: Ontology for Agents, Systems, and Integration of Services

In this contribution we extend an ontology for modelling agents and their interactions, called Ontology for Agents, Systems, and Integration of Services (in short, OASIS), with conditionals and ontological smart contracts (in short, OSCs). OSCs are ontological representations of smart contracts that allow to establish responsibilities and authorizations among agents and set agreements, whereas conditionals allow one to restrict and limit agent interactions, define activation mechanisms that trigger agent actions, and define constraints and contract terms on OSCs. Conditionals and OSCs, as defined in OASIS, are applied to extend with ontological capabilities digital public ledgers such as the blockchain and smart contracts implemented on it. We will also sketch the architecture of a framework based on the OASIS definition of OSCs that exploits the Ethereum platform and the Interplanetary File System.


Improving Solution Quality of Bounded Max-Sum Algorithm to Solve DCOPs involving Hard and Soft Constraints

Bounded Max-Sum (BMS) is a message-passing algorithm that provides approximation solution to a specific form of de-centralized coordination problems, namely Distributed Constrained Optimization Problems (DCOPs). In particular, BMS algorithm is able to solve problems of this type having large search space at the expense of low computational cost. Notably, the traditional DCOP formulation does not consider those constraints that must be satisfied(also known as hard constraints), rather it concentrates only on soft constraints. Hence, although the presence of both types of constraints are observed in a number of real-world applications, the BMS algorithm does not actively capitalize on the hard constraints. To address this issue, we tailor BMS in such a way that can deal with DCOPs having both type constraints. In so doing, our approach improves the solution quality of the algorithm. The empirical results exhibit a marked improvement in the quality of the solutions of large DCOPs.


Proceedings Second Workshop on Formal Methods for Autonomous Systems

Autonomous systems are highly complex and present unique challenges for the application of formal methods. Autonomous systems act without human intervention, and are often embedded in a robotic system, so that they can interact with the real world. As such, they exhibit the properties of safety-critical, cyber-physical, hybrid, and real-time systems. The goal of FMAS is to bring together leading researchers who are tackling the unique challenges of autonomous systems using formal methods, to present recent and ongoing work. We are interested in the use of formal methods to specify, model, or verify autonomous or robotic systems; in whole or in part. We are also interested in successful industrial applications and potential future directions for this emerging application of formal methods.


Multi-Objective Optimization of the Textile Manufacturing Process Using Deep-Q-Network Based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

Multi-objective optimization of the textile manufacturing process is an increasing challenge because of the growing complexity involved in the development of the textile industry. The use of intelligent techniques has been often discussed in this domain, although a significant improvement from certain successful applications has been reported, the traditional methods failed to work with high-as well as human intervention. Upon which, this paper proposed a multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) framework to transform the optimization process into a stochastic game and introduced the deep Q-networks algorithm to train the multiple agents. A utilitarian selection mechanism was employed in the stochastic game, which (-greedy policy) in each state to avoid the interruption of multiple equilibria and achieve the correlated equilibrium optimal solutions of the optimizing process. The case study result reflects that the proposed MARL system is possible to achieve the optimal solutions for the textile ozonation process and it performs better than the traditional approaches.


Leveraging Neural Network Gradients within Trajectory Optimization for Proactive Human-Robot Interactions

To achieve seamless human-robot interactions, robots need to intimately reason about complex interaction dynamics and future human behaviors within their motion planning process. However, there is a disconnect between state-of-the-art neural network-based human behavior models and robot motion planners -- either the behavior models are limited in their consideration of downstream planning or a simplified behavior model is used to ensure tractability of the planning problem. In this work, we present a framework that fuses together the interpretability and flexibility of trajectory optimization (TO) with the predictive power of state-of-the-art human trajectory prediction models. In particular, we leverage gradient information from data-driven prediction models to explicitly reason about human-robot interaction dynamics within a gradient-based TO problem. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach in a multi-agent scenario whereby a robot is required to safely and efficiently navigate through a crowd of up to ten pedestrians. We compare against a variety of planning methods, and show that by explicitly accounting for interaction dynamics within the planner, our method offers safer and more efficient behaviors, even yielding proactive and nuanced behaviors such as waiting for a pedestrian to pass before moving.


Second-Order Guarantees in Federated Learning

Federated learning is a useful framework for centralized learning from distributed data under practical considerations of heterogeneity, asynchrony, and privacy. Federated architectures are frequently deployed in deep learning settings, which generally give rise to non-convex optimization problems. Nevertheless, most existing analysis are either limited to convex loss functions, or only establish first-order stationarity, despite the fact that saddle-points, which are first-order stationary, are known to pose bottlenecks in deep learning. We draw on recent results on the second-order optimality of stochastic gradient algorithms in centralized and decentralized settings, and establish second-order guarantees for a class of federated learning algorithms.


Decentralized Multi-Agent Linear Bandits with Safety Constraints

We study decentralized stochastic linear bandits, where a network of $N$ agents acts cooperatively to efficiently solve a linear bandit-optimization problem over a $d$-dimensional space. For this problem, we propose DLUCB: a fully decentralized algorithm that minimizes the cumulative regret over the entire network. At each round of the algorithm each agent chooses its actions following an upper confidence bound (UCB) strategy and agents share information with their immediate neighbors through a carefully designed consensus procedure that repeats over cycles. Our analysis adjusts the duration of these communication cycles ensuring near-optimal regret performance $\mathcal{O}(d\log{NT}\sqrt{NT})$ at a communication rate of $\mathcal{O}(dN^2)$ per round. The structure of the network affects the regret performance via a small additive term - coined the regret of delay - that depends on the spectral gap of the underlying graph. Notably, our results apply to arbitrary network topologies without a requirement for a dedicated agent acting as a server. In consideration of situations with high communication cost, we propose RC-DLUCB: a modification of DLUCB with rare communication among agents. The new algorithm trades off regret performance for a significantly reduced total communication cost of $\mathcal{O}(d^3N^{2.5})$ over all $T$ rounds. Finally, we show that our ideas extend naturally to the emerging, albeit more challenging, setting of safe bandits. For the recently studied problem of linear bandits with unknown linear safety constraints, we propose the first safe decentralized algorithm. Our study contributes towards applying bandit techniques in safety-critical distributed systems that repeatedly deal with unknown stochastic environments. We present numerical simulations for various network topologies that corroborate our theoretical findings.


Gaussian Process Based Message Filtering for Robust Multi-Agent Cooperation in the Presence of Adversarial Communication

In this paper, we consider the problem of providing robustness to adversarial communication in multi-agent systems. Specifically, we propose a solution towards robust cooperation, which enables the multi-agent system to maintain high performance in the presence of anonymous non-cooperative agents that communicate faulty, misleading or manipulative information. In pursuit of this goal, we propose a communication architecture based on Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), which is amenable to a novel Gaussian Process (GP)-based probabilistic model characterizing the mutual information between the simultaneous communications of different agents due to their physical proximity and relative position. This model allows agents to locally compute approximate posterior probabilities, or confidences, that any given one of their communication partners is being truthful. These confidences can be used as weights in a message filtering scheme, thereby suppressing the influence of suspicious communication on the receiving agent's decisions. In order to assess the efficacy of our method, we introduce a taxonomy of non-cooperative agents, which distinguishes them by the amount of information available to them. We demonstrate in two distinct experiments that our method performs well across this taxonomy, outperforming alternative methods. For all but the best informed adversaries, our filtering method is able to reduce the impact that non-cooperative agents cause, reducing it to the point of negligibility, and with negligible cost to performance in the absence of adversaries.


An Artificial Consciousness Model and its relations with Philosophy of Mind

This work seeks to study the beneficial properties that an autonomous agent can obtain by implementing a cognitive architecture similar to the one of conscious beings. Along this document, a conscious model of autonomous agent based in a global workspace architecture is presented. We describe how this agent is viewed from different perspectives of philosophy of mind, being inspired by their ideas. The goal of this model is to create autonomous agents able to navigate within an environment composed of multiple independent magnitudes, adapting to its surroundings in order to find the best possible position in base of its inner preferences. The purpose of the model is to test the effectiveness of many cognitive mechanisms that are incorporated, such as an attention mechanism for magnitude selection, pos-session of inner feelings and preferences, usage of a memory system to storage beliefs and past experiences, and incorporating a global workspace which controls and integrates information processed by all the subsystem of the model. We show in a large experiment set how an autonomous agent can benefit from having a cognitive architecture such as the one described.


Human vs. supervised machine learning: Who learns patterns faster?

The capabilities of supervised machine learning (SML), especially compared to human abilities, are being discussed in scientific research and in the usage of SML. This study provides an answer to how learning performance differs between humans and machines when there is limited training data. We have designed an experiment in which 44 humans and three different machine learning algorithms identify patterns in labeled training data and have to label instances according to the patterns they find. The results show a high dependency between performance and the underlying patterns of the task. Whereas humans perform relatively similarly across all patterns, machines show large performance differences for the various patterns in our experiment. After seeing 20 instances in the experiment, human performance does not improve anymore, which we relate to theories of cognitive overload. Machines learn slower but can reach the same level or may even outperform humans in 2 of the 4 of used patterns. However, machines need more instances compared to humans for the same results. The performance of machines is comparably lower for the other 2 patterns due to the difficulty of combining input features.
