Effect of Swarm Density on Collective Tracking Performance

How does the size of a swarm affect its collective action? Despite being arguably a key parameter, no systematic and satisfactory guiding principles exist to select the number of units required for a given task and environment. Even when limited by practical considerations, system designers should endeavor to identify what a reasonable swarm size should be. Here, we show that this fundamental question is closely linked to that of selecting an appropriate swarm density. Our analysis of the influence of density on the collective performance of a target tracking task reveals different `phases' corresponding to markedly distinct group dynamics. We identify a `transition' phase, in which a complex emergent collective response arises. Interestingly, the collective dynamics within this transition phase exhibit a clear trade-off between exploratory actions and exploitative ones. We show that at any density, the exploration-exploitation balance can be adjusted to maximize the system's performance through various means, such as by changing the level of connectivity between agents. While the density is the primary factor to be considered, it should not be the sole one to be accounted for when sizing the system. Due to the inherent finite-size effects present in physical systems, we establish that the number of constituents primarily affects system-level properties such as exploitation in the transition phase. These results illustrate that instead of learning and optimizing a swarm's behavior for a specific set of task parameters, further work should instead concentrate on learning to be adaptive, thereby endowing the swarm with the highly desirable feature of being able to operate effectively over a wide range of circumstances.


EFX Exists for Four Agents with Three Types of Valuations

In this paper, we address the problem of determining an envy-free allocation of indivisible goods among multiple agents. EFX, which stands for envy-free up to any good, is a well-studied problem that has been shown to exist for specific scenarios, such as when there are only three agents with MMS valuations, as demonstrated by Chaudhury et al(2020), and for any number of agents when there are only two types of valuations as shown by Mahara(2020). Our contribution is to extend these results by showing that EFX exists for four agents with three distinct valuations. We further generalize this to show the existance of EFX allocations for n agents when n-2 of them have identical valuations.


Interaction Modeling with Multiplex Attention

Modeling multi-agent systems requires understanding how agents interact. Such systems are often difficult to model because they can involve a variety of types of interactions that layer together to drive rich social behavioral dynamics. Here we introduce a method for accurately modeling multi-agent systems. We present Interaction Modeling with Multiplex Attention (IMMA), a forward prediction model that uses a multiplex latent graph to represent multiple independent types of interactions and attention to account for relations of different strengths. We also introduce Progressive Layer Training, a training strategy for this architecture. We show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art models in trajectory forecasting and relation inference, spanning three multi-agent scenarios: social navigation, cooperative task achievement, and team sports. We further demonstrate that our approach can improve zero-shot generalization and allows us to probe how different interactions impact agent behavior.


Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning for Efficient Passenger Delivery in Urban Air Mobility

It has been considered that urban air mobility (UAM), also known as drone-taxi or electrical vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL), will play a key role in future transportation. By putting UAM into practical future transportation, several benefits can be realized, i.e., (i) the total travel time of passengers can be reduced compared to traditional transportation and (ii) there is no environmental pollution and no special labor costs to operate the system because electric batteries will be used in UAM system. However, there are various dynamic and uncertain factors in the flight environment, i.e., passenger sudden service requests, battery discharge, and collision among UAMs. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel cooperative MADRL algorithm based on centralized training and distributed execution (CTDE) concepts for reliable and efficient passenger delivery in UAM networks. According to the performance evaluation results, we confirm that the proposed algorithm outperforms other existing algorithms in terms of the number of serviced passengers increase (30%) and the waiting time per serviced passenger decrease (26%).


HoLA Robots: Mitigating Plan-Deviation Attacks in Multi-Robot Systems with Co-Observations and Horizon-Limiting Announcements

Emerging multi-robot systems rely on cooperation between humans and robots, with robots following automatically generated motion plans to service application-level tasks. Given the safety requirements associated with operating in proximity to humans and expensive infrastructure, it is important to understand and mitigate the security vulnerabilities of such systems caused by compromised robots who diverge from their assigned plans. We focus on centralized systems, where a *central entity* (CE) is responsible for determining and transmitting the motion plans to the robots, which report their location as they move following the plan. The CE checks that robots follow their assigned plans by comparing their expected location to the location they self-report. We show that this self-reporting monitoring mechanism is vulnerable to *plan-deviation attacks* where compromised robots don't follow their assigned plans while trying to conceal their movement by mis-reporting their location. We propose a two-pronged mitigation for plan-deviation attacks: (1) an attack detection technique leveraging both the robots' local sensing capabilities to report observations of other robots and *co-observation schedules* generated by the CE, and (2) a prevention technique where the CE issues *horizon-limiting announcements* to the robots, reducing their instantaneous knowledge of forward lookahead steps in the global motion plan. On a large-scale automated warehouse benchmark, we show that our solution enables attack prevention guarantees from a stealthy attacker that has compromised multiple robots.


In Which Graph Structures Can We Efficiently Find Temporally Disjoint Paths and Walks?

A temporal graph has an edge set that may change over discrete time steps, and a temporal path (or walk) must traverse edges that appear at increasing time steps. Accordingly, two temporal paths (or walks) are temporally disjoint if they do not visit any vertex at the same time. The study of the computational complexity of finding temporally disjoint paths or walks in temporal graphs has recently been initiated by Klobas et al. [IJCAI '21]. This problem is motivated by applications in multi-agent path finding (MAPF), which include robotics, warehouse management, aircraft management, and traffic routing. We extend Klobas et al.'s research by providing parameterized hardness results for very restricted cases, with a focus on structural parameters of the so-called underlying graph. On the positive side, we identify sufficiently simple cases where we can solve the problem efficiently. Our results reveal some surprising differences between the "path version" and the "walk version" (where vertices may be visited multiple times) of the problem, and answer several open questions posed by Klobas et al.


TIP: A Trust Inference and Propagation Model in Multi-Human Multi-Robot Teams

Trust has been identified as a central factor for effective human-robot teaming. Existing literature on trust modeling predominantly focuses on dyadic human-autonomy teams where one human agent interacts with one robot. There is little, if not no, research on trust modeling in teams consisting of multiple human agents and multiple robotic agents. To fill this research gap, we present the trust inference and propagation (TIP) model for trust modeling in multi-human multi-robot teams. We assert that in a multi-human multi-robot team, there exist two types of experiences that any human agent has with any robot: direct and indirect experiences. The TIP model presents a novel mathematical framework that explicitly accounts for both types of experiences. To evaluate the model, we conducted a human-subject experiment with 15 pairs of participants (N=30). Each pair performed a search and detection task with two drones. Results show that our TIP model successfully captured the underlying trust dynamics and significantly outperformed a baseline model. To the best of our knowledge, the TIP model is the first mathematical framework for computational trust modeling in multi-human multi-robot teams.


E(n)-equivariant Graph Neural Cellular Automata

Cellular automata (CAs) are computational models exhibiting rich dynamics emerging from the local interaction of cells arranged in a regular lattice. Graph CAs (GCAs) generalise standard CAs by allowing for arbitrary graphs rather than regular lattices, similar to how Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) generalise Convolutional NNs. Recently, Graph Neural CAs (GNCAs) have been proposed as models built on top of standard GNNs that can be trained to approximate the transition rule of any arbitrary GCA. Existing GNCAs are anisotropic in the sense that their transition rules are not equivariant to translation, rotation, and reflection of the nodes' spatial locations. However, it is desirable for instances related by such transformations to be treated identically by the model. By replacing standard graph convolutions with E(n)-equivariant ones, we avoid anisotropy by design and propose a class of isotropic automata that we call E(n)-GNCAs. These models are lightweight, but can nevertheless handle large graphs, capture complex dynamics and exhibit emergent self-organising behaviours. We showcase the broad and successful applicability of E(n)-GNCAs on three different tasks: (i) pattern formation, (ii) graph auto-encoding, and (iii) simulation of E(n)-equivariant dynamical systems.


A Practical Influence Approximation for Privacy-Preserving Data Filtering in Federated Learning

Federated Learning by nature is susceptible to low-quality, corrupted, or even malicious data that can severely degrade the quality of the learned model. Traditional techniques for data valuation cannot be applied as the data is never revealed. We present a novel technique for filtering, and scoring data based on a practical influence approximation (`lazy' influence) that can be implemented in a privacy-preserving manner. Each participant uses his own data to evaluate the influence of another participant's batch, and reports to the center an obfuscated score using differential privacy. Our technique allows for highly effective filtering of corrupted data in a variety of applications. Importantly, we show that most of the corrupted data can be filtered out (recall of $>90\%$, and even up to $100\%$), even under really strong privacy guarantees ($\varepsilon \leq 1$).


Conversational Information Seeking

Conversational information seeking (CIS) is concerned with a sequence of interactions between one or more users and an information system. Interactions in CIS are primarily based on natural language dialogue, while they may include other types of interactions, such as click, touch, and body gestures. This monograph provides a thorough overview of CIS definitions, applications, interactions, interfaces, design, implementation, and evaluation. This monograph views CIS applications as including conversational search, conversational question answering, and conversational recommendation. Our aim is to provide an overview of past research related to CIS, introduce the current state-of-the-art in CIS, highlight the challenges still being faced in the community. and suggest future directions.
