IBM Watson Serves Cognitive Insights at the 2016 US Open Tennis Tournament

#artificialintelligence

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) today announced that IBM Watson is coming to the US Open Tennis Championships for the first time via a new cognitive concierge feature being piloted within the tournament's official mobile apps to enhance the fan experience at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The US Open mobile app Guest Services companion will pilot a Watson-enabled discovery tool that allows fans to input natural language questions and receive immediate responses about a range of tournament topics, such as transportation and directions, food and drink options, on-site services and facilities, as well as other topics. By tapping into the Natural Language API from the Watson platform, the AI-infused app will enable fans to ask questions in natural language and get the information they need to plan and navigate their tournament experience. For example, fans can ask questions like, "Where can I get a soda?" or "Where are the taxi stands?" Due to Watson's machine learning capabilities, the app also continuously learns from previous interactions helping further refine its responses over time.

IBM Watson Created The First-Ever AI-Made Movie Trailer For 'Morgan'

#artificialintelligence

One of the tense moments Watson chose for the Morgan trailer. For a film about the risks of pushing the limits of technology too far, it only makes sense to advertise for it using artificial intelligence. Morgan, staring Kate Mara and Paul Giamatti, is a sci-fi thriller about scientists who've created a synthetic humanoid whose potential has grown dangerously beyond their control. Fitting, then, that they'd employ the help of America's AI sweetheart IBM Watson to build the film's trailer. IBM used machine learning and experimental Watson APIs, parsing out the trailers of 100 horror movies.

IBM's Watson Is Playing at This Year's US Open

#artificialintelligence

There are few jobs that IBM's Watson won't do. The supercomputer has created movie trailers, written musical scores, and even goofed around with Pokรฉmon Go. Now, its newest task is running one of the biggest events in tennis: this month's US Open championships. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people gather at New York's Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch tennis' biggest names compete for the prestigious title. But coordinating an event of that size takes a lot of work, which is why IBM and the United States Tennis Association, the organization that runs the tournament, asked Watson to do a lot of the heavy lifting.

IBM Watson becomes the first AI to cut a movie trailer with horror flick 'Morgan'

#artificialintelligence

IBM's artificial intelligence programme obviously reached the pinnacle when it guest-edited an issue of the The Drum magazine but now it has also conceived the world's first ever movie trailer composed by an AI (trailer above - behind the scenes follows). Watson was fed the trailers of more than 100 horror films to help it identify the normative structure and path in the horror genre. It embarked on a visual, audio, and composition analysis of these clips, categorising the variables and generating the movie using probabilities once it gained an understanding of the genre. The tricky part was teaching the machine the tropes involved in cutting the trailers, from moments of terror, suspense and more using sequential clips from the movie, making the most of audio and visual cues. John R Smith of IBM said: "There are patterns and types of emotions in horror movies that resonate differently with each viewer, and the intricacies and interrelation of these are what an AI system would have to identify and understand in order to create a compelling movie trailer. "Our team was faced with the challenge of not only teaching a system to understand, 'what is scary', but then to create a trailer that would be considered'frightening and suspenseful' by a majority of viewers.
