The folks at DeepMind are seeking to contribute to AI safety. They have designed a 2D testing environment for algorithms. The environment does not purport to cover all possible AI safety problems. For example, interpretability, multi-agent and formal verification safety problems are not covered. But a decent number is covered.
How John Young smuggled a corned-beef sandwich into space

One additional "passenger" on the real flight was a corned-beef sandwich that Young smuggled aboard in his pocket. While John Young, who died on Jan. 5 at age 87, is famous for his Apollo 16 moonwalks and his role as commander of the first space shuttle mission, the NASA astronaut is also remembered for a small scandal he triggered with a sneaky act: smuggling a corned-beef sandwich into space. Young slipped the sandwich into his pocket just before launching on Gemini 3 on March 23, 1965.
The DeepMind Strategy - How AI is Revolutionizing Business Models
The companies are purchased when they are still early stage, in their first 1โ3 years of life, where the focus is more on people and pure technological advancements rather than revenues (AI is the only sector in which the pure team value exceeds the business one). They maintain elements of their original brand and retain the entire existing team ("acqui-hire"). Companies maintain full independence, both physically speaking -- often they keep in place their original headquarters -- as well as operationally. This independence is so vast to allow them to pursue acquisition strategies in turn (DeepMind bought Dark Blue Labs and Vision Factory in 2014). The parent company uses the subsidiary services and integrates rather than replaces the existing business (e.g., Google Brain and Deepmind).

Humanity faces a wide range of challenges that are characterised by extreme complexity, from climate change to feeding and providing healthcare for an ever-expanding global population. Left unchecked, these phenomena have the potential to cause devastation on a previously untold scale. Fortunately, developments in AI could play an innovative role in helping us address these problems. At the same time, the successful integration of AI technologies into our social and economic world creates its own challenges. They could either help overcome economic inequality or they could worsen it if the benefits are not distributed widely.

If you use this package, please cite our accompanying accompanying tech report. MuJoCo Pro must be installed before dm_control, since dm_control's install script generates Python ctypes bindings based on MuJoCo's header files. By default, dm_control assumes that the MuJoCo Zip archive is extracted as /.mujoco/mjpro150.

The world's top Go player will take on an artificial intelligence opponent again this spring, but this time it will not be Google's DeepMind that provides the machine rival. Ke Jie had previously vowed never to play against AI again after repeatedly losing to DeepMind's AlphaGo. But according to Chinese media reports, he will take on a range AI opponents, including one from China's Tencent. The man-versus-machine series will take place in China in April 2018. The matches will form part of the the World AI Go Tournament.

Human Go champion backtracks on vow to never face an AI opponent again
Back in May, AlphaGo from Google, an AI algorithm that is part of DeepMind, defeated the human world champion Ke Jie in a three-part match. After it was over, Jie vowed never to play a computer again. But apparently something has changed his mind because Chinese news sources report that Jie will once again play an artificial intelligence at an AI tournament to be held in China in April 2018. Ke Jie is one of the tournament's ambassadors, and he will play against the AI Tianrang. Normally, a human representative places pieces on behalf of the AI, but in this case, a robotic arm developed by Fuzhou University will fulfill that role.
Applying machine learning to mammography screening for breast cancer DeepMind

We'll be working with a group of leading research institutions, led by the Cancer Research UK Centre at Imperial College London, and alongside the AI health research team at Google, to determine if cutting-edge machine learning technology could help improve the detection of breast cancer. Breast cancer is a significant global health problem. Every single year, over 1.6 million people are diagnosed with the disease, and while advances in early detection and treatment have improved survival rates, breast cancer still claims the lives of 500,000 people around the world every year, around 11,000 of whom are here in the UK.
