Analysis: ChatGPT is great at what it's designed to do. You're just using it wrong

#artificialintelligence

It doesn't take much to get ChatGPT to make a factual mistake. My son is doing a report on U.S. presidents, so I figured I'd help him out by looking up a few biographies. Garry Wills famously wrote "Lincoln at Gettysburg," and Lincoln himself wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, of course, but it's not a bad start. Then I tried something harder, asking instead about the much more obscure William Henry Harrison, and it gamely provided a list, nearly all of which was wrong. Books about Harrison, fewer than half of which are correct.

ChatGPT leads race for new way to search the net

BBC News

Whether you have asked it to write you a song in the style of your favourite musician, sneaked in a homework question (500 words on the end of World War Two? no problem), tasked it to write copy for your company website, write a speech or even churn out specific program code, ChatGPT has proved that it can deliver - and in a convincing way.

The Dark Side Of ChatGPT: How AI Will Create More Work For Us, Not Less - AI Summary

#artificialintelligence

The burden of work is increasing as new technologies are developed. ChatGPT is one example of a technology that has created new burdens for people. The new tool from OpenAI that tries to determine the likelihood that a chunk of text was AI-generated will likely add to the burden of work. Artificial intelligence could spare you some effort. Even if it does, it will create a lot more work in the process.

A Machine Crushed Us at Pokรฉmon

The Atlantic - Technology

For a brief moment, we could taste victory. On the first turn of our online Pokรฉmon battle against the player Athena2023, our Aegislash dealt some serious damage to Athena2023's Gengar. One more blow like that, and Gengar, a little purple ghost with a sinister grin, would be toast. But Athena2023 had other ideas. Before we could make another move, Gengar blew away Aegislash, a levitating Pokรฉmon with the appearance of a zoomorphic sword and shield, with a single attack.

The Race to Build a ChatGPT-Powered Search Engine

WIRED

Jiang Chen, a machine learning expert who previously worked at Google, was mesmerized when he first tried ChatGPT, the remarkably coherent and seemingly well-informed chatbot from OpenAI that has become an internet sensation. But the technology's aura of power dimmed when Chen tried using the same underlying artificial intelligence technology to build a better search tool for the startup he cofounded, Moveworks. The company uses AI to help employees sift through information such as technical support documents and HR pages. Chen's new AI search tool was great at pulling up all sorts of useful information from such documents, including serving up addresses and phone numbers--but some of them weren't real. "Its ability to fabricate is just amazing," Chen says.

In the ChatGPT era, evaluating student performance through traditional term papers no longer makes sense. The best solution to this most modern of dilemmas is a return to the past. There's no need to seek out a technological remedy when history's oldest teaching style points to a better way. When the Socratic method is used in place of lecturing, students are forced to trade their passive role in the classroom for an active one in which participation is the primary measure of mastery. Named for Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher, the Socratic method employs skillful questioning to test the limits of each student's grasp of the material while the instructor and students explore the difficult ideas and concepts together.

What to know about OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT

Washington Post - Technology News

Now, OpenAI, the company behind the chatbot, is rocketing into the mainstream. Microsoft is reportedly investing up to $10 billion in the company, hoping it can use ChatGPT to resuscitate its search engine, Bing, and improve products in its Microsoft Office suite.

ChatGPT's Explosive Popularity Makes It the Fastest-Growing App in Human History

#artificialintelligence

According to reporting from Reuters, OpenAI's ChatGPT is now the fastest-growing app in human history, reaching an estimated 100 million active monthly users in just the two months since its November release. "In 20 years following the internet space," UBS analysts reportedly wrote in a note to Reuters, citing a report from web traffic analytics firm SimilarWeb, "we cannot recall a faster ramp in a consumer internet app." Per that report, an average of roughly 13 million unique visitors were using ChatGPT per day in January -- a jaw-dropping figure, and double the average number of individual users that were using the tech each day in December. To say this thing has taken off like wildfire hardly cuts it, and VCs have paid attention. Of course, comparing ChatGPT, certainly the newest Silicon Valley darling, to established SV behemoths like Google, Apple, or Meta isn't totally fair, considering the role that social media in particular has played in ChatGPT's exponential success.

An interview with AI: What ChatGPT says about itself

#artificialintelligence

Though others have interviewed ChatGPT, I had some anxiety-riddled questions of my own: Will you take my job? Is the singularity upon us? These questions are half facetious, half serious. If you've been hidden away and somehow missed the ruckus, here's what all the commotion's about: In November, conversational AI tool ChatGPT took the world by storm, crossing one million users a mere five days after its release, according to its developer, San Francisco's OpenAI. If you are still one of those who think this is all hype, take it up with Microsoft (MSFT).
