The benefits and pitfalls of ChatGPT for journalists

#artificialintelligence

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) language model created by OpenAI, has been making waves across the internet, leading to questions on how AI will change the way we work and write. In the latest ICFJ Pamela Howard Forum on Global Crisis Reporting webinar, Jenna Burrell, director of research at Data & Society, dove into the pros of ChatGPT and how it can be a tool for journalists, as well as its limitations and what journalists should be cautious about. One of the most important tasks for journalists is simplifying complex topics for a general audience. ChatGPT makes this easier, Burrell said. Using the language model allows journalists to plug an abstract or part of an academic article into ChatGPT and ask the software to simplify it.

Hands-On Workshop: AI-Assisted Data Science End to End Platform Tickets, Tue, Feb 21, 2023 at 9:00 AM

#artificialintelligence

Join us for a 2 hour hands-on workshop and learn how to easily create and deploy models. Tomorrow's AI systems will be built by AI while data science teams play a supervisory role. Much like Tony Stark instructing Jarvis, data science teams can instruct generative AI to executive tasks. We will be doing a 2-hour end to end demonstration and workshop of our state of the art AI-Assisted Data Science platform. The workshop will kick off with a technical talk surrounding Generative AI, LLMs, and its implications within the industry.

Google Bets Big on Its AI Service 'Bard' to Counter ChatGPT

TIME - Tech

Google is girding for a battle of wits in the field of artificial intelligence with "Bard," a conversational service apparently aimed at countering the popularity of the ChatGPT tool backed by Microsoft. Bard initially will be available exclusively to a group of "trusted testers" before being widely released later this year, according to a Monday blog post from Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Google's chatbot is supposed to be able to explain complex subjects such as outer space discoveries in terms simple enough for a child to understand. It also claims the service will also perform other more mundane tasks, such as providing tips for planning a party, or lunch ideas based on what food is left in a refrigerator. Pichai didn't say in his post whether Bard will be able to write prose in the vein of William Shakespeare, the playwright who apparently inspired the service's name.

Genius or Subpar AI Mathematician?

#artificialintelligence

The November release of ChatGPT garnered unprecedented public and media attention. OpenAI's conversational large language model (LLM) was widely applauded for its ability to answer complex queries, generate correct computer code and coherent long-form essays, and even solve math problems. But might that last claim have been premature? In the new paper Mathematical Capabilities of ChatGPT, a research team from the University of Oxford, TU Wein, University of Cambridge, University of Vienna, and Princeton University tests ChatGPT's mathematical capabilities on publicly available and hand-crafted datasets and evaluates its suitability as an assistant to professional mathematicians. The team concludes that despite the glowing media reviews, ChatGPT's mathematical abilities "are significantly below those of an average mathematics graduate student." To effectively evaluate ChatGPT on advanced math problems, the researchers build a new dataset, GHOSTS, comprising a total of 728 prompts in six carefully crafted subdatasets: Grad-Text, Holes-in-Proofs, Olympiad-Problem-Solving, Symbolic-Integration, MATH, and Search-Engine-Aspects.

A Beginner's Guide to ChatGPT – The OpenAI tool

#artificialintelligence

ChatGPT is a new AI tool that has taken the world by storm. Thinking more like a human brain, OpenAI just revolutionized artificial intelligence (AI) to a level that no public API provider has. Well, if you are wondering how you can get started with ChatGPT, here is how. In the past, several C-programmed tools were available for Windows and Linux users, all you needed to do was interact with the tool like you would with a fellow human, and prompts like Hi, my name is this, how are you today provided a benchmark for your next replies. With ChatGPT, to get started, you don't need to salute the AI tool, simply get straight to the point, and you will most definitely receive a reply that may excite you.

Chart: Which Sectors Are Working With OpenAI?

#artificialintelligence

While OpenAI has really risen to fame with the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, the U.S.-based artificial intelligence research and deployment company is about much more than its popular AI-powered chatbot. In fact, OpenAI's technology is already being used by hundreds of companies around the world. According to data published by the enterprise software platform Enterprise Apps Today, companies in the technology and education sectors are most likely to take advantage of OpenAI's solutions, while business services, manufacturing and finance are also high on the list of industries utilizing artificial intelligence in their business processes. Broadly defined as "the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages" artificial intelligence (AI) can now be found in various applications, including for example web search, natural language translation, recommendation systems, voice recognition and autonomous driving. In healthcare, AI can help synthesize large volumes of clinical data to gain a holistic view of the patient, but it's also used in robotics for surgery, nursing, rehabilitation and orthopedics.

If you're having trouble with Chat GPT, OpenAI Playground has got you covered. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to use OpenAI Playground, including their new speech-to-text feature. Once inside, select'Playground' from the top menu. One cool feature that OpenAI has, and is not available with Chat GPT, is the speech-to-text option. Click it and try it out now. Click'Start Recording' to say your prompt instead of typing it.

Google to release ChatGPT rival named Bard

The Japan Times

San Francisco/Paris – Google said on Monday that it will release a conversational chatbot named Bard, setting up an artificial intelligence showdown with Microsoft which has invested billions in the creators of ChatGPT, the hugely popular language app that convincingly mimics human writing. ChatGPT, created by San Francisco company OpenAI, has caused a sensation for its ability to write essays, poems or programming code on demand within seconds, sparking widespread fears of cheating or of entire professions becoming obsolete. Microsoft announced last month that it was backing OpenAI and has begun to integrate ChatGPT features into its Teams platform, with expectations that it will adapt the app to its Office suite and Bing search engine. This could be due to a conflict with your ad-blocking or security software. Please add japantimes.co.jp and piano.io to your list of allowed sites.

Stochastic parrot or world model? How large language models learn

#artificialintelligence

Large language models show impressive capabilities. Are they just superficial statistics – or is there more to them? Systems such as OpenAI's GPT-3 have shown that large language models have capabilities that can make them useful tools in areas as diverse as text processing and programming. With ChatGPT the company has released a model that puts these capabilities in the hands of the general public, creating new challenges for educational institutions, for example. Impressive capabilities quickly lead to the overestimation of AI systems like ChatGPT.

Augmenting Zero-Shot Dense Retrievers with Plug-in Mixture-of-Memories

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In this paper we improve the zero-shot generalization ability of language models via Mixture-Of-Memory Augmentation (MoMA), a mechanism that retrieves augmentation documents from multiple information corpora ("external memories"), with the option to "plug in" new memory at inference time. We develop a joint learning mechanism that trains the augmentation component with latent labels derived from the end retrieval task, paired with hard negatives from the memory mixture. We instantiate the model in a zero-shot dense retrieval setting by augmenting a strong T5-based retriever with MoMA. Our model, MoMA, obtains strong zero-shot retrieval accuracy on the eighteen tasks included in the standard BEIR benchmark. It outperforms systems that seek generalization from increased model parameters and computation steps. Our analysis further illustrates the necessity of augmenting with mixture-of-memory for robust generalization, the benefits of augmentation learning, and how MoMA utilizes the plug-in memory at inference time without changing its parameters. We plan to open source our code.
