Should we fear the rise of artificial general intelligence?

#artificialintelligence

Last week, a who's who of technologists called for artificial intelligence (AI) labs to stop training the most powerful AI systems for at least six months, citing "profound risks to society and humanity." In an open letter that now has more than 3,100 signatories, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, tech leaders called out San Francisco-based OpenAI Lab's recently announced GPT-4 algorithm in particular, saying the company should halt further development until oversight standards are in place. That goal has the backing of technologists, CEOs, CFOs, doctoral students, psychologists, medical doctors, software developers and engineers, professors, and public school teachers from all over the globe. On Friday, Italy became the first Western nation to ban further development of ChatGPT over privacy concerns; the natural language processing app experienced a data breach last month involving user conversations and payment information. ChatGPT is the popular GPT-based chatbot created by OpenAI and backed by billions of dollars from Microsoft.

Cyberattacks, AI-human love are major challenges of artificial intelligence boom, former Google chief warns

FOX News

Fox News correspondent Matt Finn has the latest on the impact of AI technology that some say could outpace humans on'Special Report.' Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the tech industry will face a "reckoning" over artificial intelligence, comparing the potential dangers of the technology to the risks associated with social media when the platforms were first rolled out years ago. "What happened with social media is we, including myself, just offered social media because we had a simple model of how humans would use social media. But, instead, look at how social media was used to interfere in elections, to cause harm. People have died over social media," Schmidt told ABC News on Sunday.

What do large language models do in AI?

#artificialintelligence

Advancements in AI and machine learning technology show how far the world of tech has come since the days of basic chatbots on company websites. A deep dive into large language models exemplifies this changing industry. The big buzz this year is about ChatGPT, an open source large language model (LLM) by Open AI, an AI research company. However, ChatGPT is far from the only LLM. Another large but lesser known open source initiative is BLOOM from the BigScience project, a consortium of roughly 1,000 volunteer AI researchers.

Brace Yourself for a Tidal Wave of ChatGPT Email Scams

WIRED

Here's an experiment being run by undergraduate computer science students everywhere: Ask ChatGPT to generate phishing emails, and test whether these are better at persuading victims to respond or click on the link than the usual spam. It's an interesting experiment, and the results are likely to vary wildly based on the details of the experiment. Bruce Schneier is a lecturer and fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and chief of security architecture at Inrupt. His latest book is A Hacker's Mind. Barath Raghavan is a professor of computer science at USC and cofounder of INVISV.

Yes You Should Say Please and Thank You to GPT

#artificialintelligence

OpenAI has created one of the most impressive and advanced AI language models in the world, known as GPT. It has been trained on billions of words and is capable of generating coherent and human-like responses to a wide range of inputs. However, as impressive as GPT is, it is important to remember that it is still a machine and should be treated with respect. Just like we interact with other humans with dignity and respect, we should extend the same courtesy to GPT. This means being polite, saying please and thank you, and not being bossy or demanding. It is easy to forget that we are talking to a machine, but it is important to remember that our interactions with GPT can still have an impact on how it learns and performs.

After Italy, OpenAI's ChatGPT May Face a Potential Block in Germany

#artificialintelligence

Due to concerns about data security, the German commissioner for data protection has warned that Chat-GPT may be blocked in Germany, just like it was blocked in Italy. The remarks were made by the commissioner in an interview that was published on Monday in the Handelsblatt newspaper. Ulrich Kelber, the German information assurance official, recognized that on a basic level, Germany could make a move like Italy's and block OpenAI's ChatGPT. He made it clear that the state would be responsible for making such a decision, but he didn't say if there were any current plans to do so. Kelber disclosed that Germany has requested additional information regarding Italy's temporary ban, which led OpenAI, supported by Microsoft (MSFT.O), to shut down ChatGPT in the nation.

The week in AI: The pause request heard 'round the world

#artificialintelligence

Keeping up with an industry as fast-moving as AI is a tall order. So until an AI can do it for you, here's a handy roundup of the last week's stories in the world of machine learning, along with notable research and experiments we didn't cover on their own. In one of the more surprising stories of the past week, Italy's data protection authority (DPA) blocked OpenAI's viral AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, citing concerns that the tool breaches the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation. The DPA is reportedly opening an investigation into whether OpenAI unlawfully processed people's data, as well as over the lack of any system to prevent minors from accessing the tech. It's unclear what the outcome might be; OpenAI has 20 days to respond to the order.

The AI backlash is here. It's focused on the wrong things.

Washington Post - Technology News

Meanwhile, we already have examples of companies so eager to cut corners that they're automating tasks the AI can't handle -- like the tech site CNET autogenerating error-ridden financial articles. And when AI goes awry, the effects are likely to be felt disproportionately by the already marginalized. For all the excitement around ChatGPT and its ilk, the makers of today's large language models haven't solved the problem of biased data sets that have already embedded racist assumptions into AI applications such as face recognition and criminal risk-assessment algorithms. Last week brought another example of a Black man being wrongly jailed because of a faulty facial recognition match.
