In this paper, we explore the transformative potential of LLMs along with the current applications, future directions, and strategic recommendations for marketers. In particular, we focus on LLMs major business drivers such as personalization, real-time-interactive customer insights, and content automation, and how they enable customers and business outcomes. For instance, the ethical aspects of AI with respect to data privacy, transparency, and mitigation of bias are also covered, with the goal of promoting responsible use of the technology through best practices and the use of new technologies businesses can tap into the LLM potential, which help growth and stay one step ahead in the turmoil of digital marketing. This article is designed to give marketers the necessary guidance by using best industry practices to integrate these powerful LLMs into their marketing strategy and innovation without compromising on the ethos of their brand.

FSMoE: A Flexible and Scalable Training System for Sparse Mixture-of-Experts Models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Recent large language models (LLMs) have tended to leverage sparsity to reduce computations, employing the sparsely activated mixture-of-experts (MoE) technique. MoE introduces four modules, including token routing, token communication, expert computation, and expert parallelism, that impact model quality and training efficiency. To enable versatile usage of MoE models, we introduce FSMoE, a flexible training system optimizing task scheduling with three novel techniques: 1) Unified abstraction and online profiling of MoE modules for task scheduling across various MoE implementations. 2) Co-scheduling intra-node and inter-node communications with computations to minimize communication overheads. 3) To support near-optimal task scheduling, we design an adaptive gradient partitioning method for gradient aggregation and a schedule to adaptively pipeline communications and computations. We conduct extensive experiments with configured MoE layers and real-world MoE models on two GPU clusters. Experimental results show that 1) our FSMoE supports four popular types of MoE routing functions and is more efficient than existing implementations (with up to a 1.42$\times$ speedup), and 2) FSMoE outperforms the state-of-the-art MoE training systems (DeepSpeed-MoE and Tutel) by 1.18$\times$-1.22$\times$ on 1458 MoE layers and 1.19$\times$-3.01$\times$ on real-world MoE models based on GPT-2 and Mixtral using a popular routing function.

Jailbreaking Large Language Models in Infinitely Many Ways

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We discuss the "Infinitely Many Meanings" attacks (IMM), a category of jailbreaks that leverages the increasing capabilities of a model to handle paraphrases and encoded communications to bypass their defensive mechanisms. IMMs' viability pairs and grows with a model's capabilities to handle and bind the semantics of simple mappings between tokens and work extremely well in practice, posing a concrete threat to the users of the most powerful LLMs in commerce. We show how one can bypass the safeguards of the most powerful open- and closed-source LLMs and generate content that explicitly violates their safety policies. One can protect against IMMs by improving the guardrails and making them scale with the LLMs' capabilities. For two categories of attacks that are straightforward to implement, i.e., bijection and encoding, we discuss two defensive strategies, one in token and the other in embedding space. We conclude with some research questions we believe should be prioritised to enhance the defensive mechanisms of LLMs and our understanding of their safety.

EmbodiedGPT: Vision-Language Pre-Training via Embodied Chain of Thought

Neural Information Processing Systems

Embodied AI is a crucial frontier in robotics, capable of planning and executing action sequences for robots to accomplish long-horizon tasks in physical environments. In this work, we introduce EmbodiedGPT, an end-to-end multi-modal foundation model for embodied AI, empowering embodied agents with multi-modal understanding and execution capabilities. To achieve this, we have made the following efforts: (i) We craft a large-scale embodied planning dataset, termed EgoCOT. The dataset consists of carefully selected videos from the Ego4D dataset, along with corresponding high-quality language instructions. Specifically, we generate a sequence of sub-goals with the "Chain of Thoughts" mode for effective embodied planning.(ii) We introduce an efficient training approach to EmbodiedGPT for high-quality plan generation, by adapting a 7B large language model (LLM) to the EgoCOT dataset via prefix tuning.

Fine-Grained Visual Prompting

Neural Information Processing Systems

Vision-Language Models (VLMs), such as CLIP, have demonstrated impressive zero-shot transfer capabilities in image-level visual perception. However, these models have shown limited performance in instance-level tasks that demand precise localization and recognition. Previous works have suggested that incorporating visual prompts, such as colorful boxes or circles, can improve the ability of models to recognize objects of interest. Nonetheless, compared to language prompting, visual prompting designs are rarely explored. Existing approaches, which employ coarse visual cues such as colorful boxes or circles, often result in sub-optimal performance due to the inclusion of irrelevant and noisy pixels.

Sam Altman's OpenAI backing initiative headed by several anti-Trump staff pushing liberal causes

FOX News

Fox News chief national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reports on what the US and Israel are doing to stay ahead of adversaries in AI on'Special Report.' OpenAI has partnered with a new AI initiative led by a group co-founded with outgoing Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry that has pushed left-wing causes and has several board members aligned with Democrats. OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, is backing an initiative known as AI 2030, which is aimed at shaping "public dialogue about U.S. competition against China on AI," Politico reported in October. The initiative is led by the "non-partisan" think tank American Security Project (ASP), where Kerry was a founding member and served two stints on the board of directors. ASP has promoted the idea that climate change is a national security threat, and argued on its website that pulling out of the Iran Nuclear Deal was a bad idea that "harms national security."

BeaverTails: Towards Improved Safety Alignment of LLM via a Human-Preference Dataset

Neural Information Processing Systems

In this paper, we introduce the BeaverTails dataset, aimed at fostering research on safety alignment in large language models (LLMs). In total, we have gathered safety meta-labels for 333,963 question-answer (QA) pairs and 361,903 pairs of expert comparison data for both the helpfulness and harmlessness metrics. We believe this dataset provides vital resources for the community, contributing towards the safe development and deployment of LLMs. Our project page is available at the following URL: https://sites.google.com/view/pku-beavertails.

Democratic lawmakers pen letter accusing Meta, OpenAI, Google and more of trying to 'buy favor' with Trump

FOX News

Fox News congressional correspondent Aishah Hasnie has more on who will be in attendance and policies President-elect Donald Trump will enact during his first day in office on'Special Report.' Democratic lawmakers have penned a letter accusing Big Tech companies and leaders of engaging in an "effort to influence and sway" the incoming administration following substantial donations to President-elect Donald Trump's inaugural fund. The letter, obtained by Fox News Digital, was distributed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Michael Bennet to Amazon, Apple, Google, OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft and Uber. "Big Tech companies have come under increased scrutiny from federal regulators for antitrust violations, violations of privacy, and harms to workers, consumers, and competition. At the same time, lawmakers in both parties have voiced support for regulating tech platforms, in recognition that there is currently no comprehensive set of rules for the tech sector," the letter states.

Event Stream GPT: A Data Pre-processing and Modeling Library for Generative, Pre-trained Transformers over Continuous-time Sequences of Complex Events

Neural Information Processing Systems

Generative, pre-trained transformers (GPTs, a type of "Foundation Models") have reshaped natural language processing (NLP) through their versatility in diverse downstream tasks. However, their potential extends far beyond NLP. This paper provides a software utility to help realize this potential, extending the applicability of GPTs to continuous-time sequences of complex events with internal dependencies, such as medical record datasets. Despite their potential, the adoption of foundation models in these domains has been hampered by the lack of suitable tools for model construction and evaluation. To bridge this gap, we introduce Event Stream GPT (ESGPT), an open-source library designed to streamline the end-to-end process for building GPTs for continuous-time event sequences. ESGPT allows users to (1) build flexible, foundation-model scale input datasets by specifying only a minimal configuration file, (2) leverage a Hugging Face compatible modeling API for GPTs over this modality that incorporates intra-event causal dependency structures and autoregressive generation capabilities, and (3) evaluate models via standardized processes that can assess few and even zero-shot performance of pre-trained models on user-specified fine-tuning tasks.

Make an Omelette with Breaking Eggs: Zero-Shot Learning for Novel Attribute Synthesis

Neural Information Processing Systems

Most of the existing algorithms for zero-shot classification problems typically rely on the attribute-based semantic relations among categories to realize the classification of novel categories without observing any of their instances. However, training the zero-shot classification models still requires attribute labeling for each class (or even instance) in the training dataset, which is also expensive. To this end, in this paper, we bring up a new problem scenario: ''Can we derive zero-shot learning for novel attribute detectors/classifiers and use them to automatically annotate the dataset for labeling efficiency?'' Basically, given only a small set of detectors that are learned to recognize some manually annotated attributes (i.e., the seen attributes), we aim to synthesize the detectors of novel attributes in a zero-shot learning manner. Our proposed method, Zero-Shot Learning for Attributes (ZSLA), which is the first of its kind to the best of our knowledge, tackles this new research problem by applying the set operations to first decompose the seen attributes into their basic attributes and then recombine these basic attributes into the novel ones.
