LowResource at BLP-2023 Task 2: Leveraging BanglaBert for Low Resource Sentiment Analysis of Bangla Language

This paper describes the system of the LowResource Team for Task 2 of BLP-2023, which involves conducting sentiment analysis on a dataset composed of public posts and comments from diverse social media platforms. Our primary aim is to utilize BanglaBert, a BERT model pre-trained on a large Bangla corpus, using various strategies including fine-tuning, dropping random tokens, and using several external datasets. Our final model is an ensemble of the three best BanglaBert variations. Our system has achieved overall 3rd in the Test Set among 30 participating teams with a score of 0.718. Additionally, we discuss the promising systems that didn't perform well namely task-adaptive pertaining and paraphrasing using BanglaT5. Pragmatics in Language Grounding: Phenomena, Tasks, and Modeling Approaches

People rely heavily on context to enrich meaning beyond what is literally said, enabling concise but effective communication. To interact successfully and naturally with people, user-facing artificial intelligence systems will require similar skills in pragmatics: relying on various types of context -- from shared linguistic goals and conventions, to the visual and embodied world -- to use language effectively. We survey existing grounded settings and pragmatic modeling approaches and analyze how the task goals, environmental contexts, and communicative affordances in each work enrich linguistic meaning. We present recommendations for future grounded task design to naturally elicit pragmatic phenomena, and suggest directions that focus on a broader range of communicative contexts and affordances.


Sentiment Analysis of Twitter Posts on Global Conflicts

Sentiment analysis of social media data is an emerging field with vast applications in various domains. In this study, we developed a sentiment analysis model to analyze social media sentiment, especially tweets, during global conflicting scenarios. To establish our research experiment, we identified a recent global dispute incident on Twitter and collected around 31,000 filtered Tweets for several months to analyze human sentiment worldwide.


A Comprehensive Review on Sentiment Analysis: Tasks, Approaches and Applications

Sentiment analysis (SA) is an emerging field in text mining. It is the process of computationally identifying and categorizing opinions expressed in a piece of text over different social media platforms. Social media plays an essential role in knowing the customer mindset towards a product, services, and the latest market trends. Most organizations depend on the customer's response and feedback to upgrade their offered products and services. SA or opinion mining seems to be a promising research area for various domains. It plays a vital role in analyzing big data generated daily in structured and unstructured formats over the internet. This survey paper defines sentiment and its recent research and development in different domains, including voice, images, videos, and text. SBTRec- A Transformer Framework for Personalized Tour Recommendation Problem with Sentiment Analysis

When traveling to an unfamiliar city for holidays, tourists often rely on guidebooks, travel websites, or recommendation systems to plan their daily itineraries and explore popular points of interest (POIs). However, these approaches may lack optimization in terms of time feasibility, localities, and user preferences. In this paper, we propose the SBTRec algorithm: a BERT-based Trajectory Recommendation with sentiment analysis, for recommending personalized sequences of POIs as itineraries. The key contributions of this work include analyzing users' check-ins and uploaded photos to understand the relationship between POI visits and distance. We introduce SBTRec, which encompasses sentiment analysis to improve recommendation accuracy by understanding users' preferences and satisfaction levels from reviews and comments about different POIs. Our proposed algorithms are evaluated against other sequence prediction methods using datasets from 8 cities. The results demonstrate that SBTRec achieves an average F1 score of 61.45%, outperforming baseline algorithms. The paper further discusses the flexibility of the SBTRec algorithm, its ability to adapt to different scenarios and cities without modification, and its potential for extension by incorporating additional information for more reliable predictions. Overall, SBTRec provides personalized and relevant POI recommendations, enhancing tourists' overall trip experiences. Future work includes fine-tuning personalized embeddings for users, with evaluation of users' comments on POIs,~to further enhance prediction accuracy.


Prompt Pool based Class-Incremental Continual Learning for Dialog State Tracking

Continual learning is crucial for dialog state tracking (DST) in dialog systems, since requirements from users for new functionalities are often encountered. However, most of existing continual learning methods for DST require task identities during testing, which is a severe limit in real-world applications. In this paper, we aim to address continual learning of DST in the class-incremental scenario (namely the task identity is unknown in testing). Inspired by the recently emerging prompt tuning method that performs well on dialog systems, we propose to use the prompt pool method, where we maintain a pool of key-value paired prompts and select prompts from the pool according to the distance between the dialog history and the prompt keys. The proposed method can automatically identify tasks and select appropriate prompts during testing. We conduct experiments on Schema-Guided Dialog dataset (SGD) and another dataset collected from a real-world dialog application. Experiment results show that the prompt pool method achieves much higher joint goal accuracy than the baseline. After combining with a rehearsal buffer, the model performance can be further improved.


OrchestraLLM: Efficient Orchestration of Language Models for Dialogue State Tracking

Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized the landscape of Natural Language Processing systems, but are computationally expensive. To reduce the cost without sacrificing performance, previous studies have explored various approaches to harness the potential of Small Language Models (SLMs) as cost-effective alternatives to their larger counterparts. Driven by findings that SLMs and LLMs exhibit complementary strengths in a structured knowledge extraction task, this work presents a novel SLM/LLM routing framework designed to improve computational efficiency and enhance task performance. First, exemplar pools are created to represent the types of contexts where each LM provides a more reliable answer, leveraging a sentence embedding fine-tuned so that context similarity is close to dialogue state similarity. Then, during inference, the k-nearest exemplars to the testing instance are retrieved, and the instance is routed according to majority vote. In dialogue state tracking tasks, the proposed routing framework enhances performance substantially compared to relying solely on LLMs, while reducing the computational costs by over 50%.


LEEETs-Dial: Linguistic Entrainment in End-to-End Task-oriented Dialogue systems

Linguistic entrainment, or alignment, represents a phenomenon where linguistic patterns employed by conversational participants converge to one another. While alignment has been shown to produce a more natural user experience, most dialogue systems do not have any provisions for it. In this work, we introduce methods for achieving dialogue alignment in a GPT-2-based end-to-end dialogue system through the utilization of shared vocabulary. We experiment with training instance weighting, alignment-specific loss, and additional conditioning to generate responses that align with the user. By comparing different entrainment techniques on the MultiWOZ dataset, we demonstrate that all three approaches produce significantly better-aligned results than the baseline, as confirmed by both automated and manual evaluation metrics.


End-to-end Task-oriented Dialogue: A Survey of Tasks, Methods, and Future Directions

End-to-end task-oriented dialogue (EToD) can directly generate responses in an end-to-end fashion without modular training, which attracts escalating popularity. The advancement of deep neural networks, especially the successful use of large pre-trained models, has further led to significant progress in EToD research in recent years. In this paper, we present a thorough review and provide a unified perspective to summarize existing approaches as well as recent trends to advance the development of EToD research. The contributions of this paper can be summarized: (1) \textbf{\textit{First survey}}: to our knowledge, we take the first step to present a thorough survey of this research field; (2) \textbf{\textit{New taxonomy}}: we first introduce a unified perspective for EToD, including (i) \textit{Modularly EToD} and (ii) \textit{Fully EToD}; (3) \textbf{\textit{New Frontiers}}: we discuss some potential frontier areas as well as the corresponding challenges, hoping to spur breakthrough research in EToD field; (4) \textbf{\textit{Abundant resources}}: we build a public website\footnote{We collect the related papers, baseline projects, and leaderboards for the community at \url{https://etods.net/}.}, where EToD researchers could directly access the recent progress. We hope this work can serve as a thorough reference for the EToD research community.


CoRE-CoG: Conversational Recommendation of Entities using Constrained Generation

End-to-end conversational recommendation systems (CRS) generate responses by leveraging both dialog history and a knowledge base (KB). A CRS mainly faces three key challenges: (1) at each turn, it must decide if recommending a KB entity is appropriate; if so, it must identify the most relevant KB entity to recommend; and finally, it must recommend the entity in a fluent utterance that is consistent with the conversation history. Recent CRSs do not pay sufficient attention to these desiderata, often generating unfluent responses or not recommending (relevant) entities at the right turn. We introduce a new CRS we call CoRE-CoG. CoRE-CoG addresses the limitations in prior systems by implementing (1) a recommendation trigger that decides if the system utterance should include an entity, (2) a type pruning module that improves the relevance of recommended entities, and (3) a novel constrained response generator to make recommendations while maintaining fluency. Together, these modules ensure simultaneous accurate recommendation decisions and fluent system utterances. Experiments with recent benchmarks show the superiority particularly on conditional generation sub-tasks with close to 10 F1 and 4 Recall@1 percent points gain over baselines.
