Linear Regression (Python Implementation) - GeeksforGeeks

#artificialintelligence

Linear regression is a statistical approach for modelling relationship between a dependent variable with a given set of independent variables. Note: In this article, we refer dependent variables as response and independent variables as features for simplicity. In order to provide a basic understanding of linear regression, we start with the most basic version of linear regression, i.e. Simple linear regression is an approach for predicting a response using a single feature. It is assumed that the two variables are linearly related.

Data Preparation for Machine Learning (7-Day Mini-Course)

#artificialintelligence

Data preparation involves transforming raw data into a form that is more appropriate for modeling. Preparing data may be the most important part of a predictive modeling project and the most time-consuming, although it seems to be the least discussed. Instead, the focus is on machine learning algorithms, whose usage and parameterization has become quite routine. Practical data preparation requires knowledge of data cleaning, feature selection data transforms, dimensionality reduction, and more. In this crash course, you will discover how you can get started and confidently prepare data for a predictive modeling project with Python in seven days. This is a big and important post.

Low-light Environment Neural Surveillance

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Furthermore, the rate of reported crimes is dependent on the victims or bystanders to self-report. We design and implement an end-to-end system for real-time Though there exist algorithms for fully automated action crime detection in low-light environments. Unlike Closed-recognition [1-5], many are not applied in real-time Circuit Television, which performs reactively, the Low-Light or low-light environments. The existing benchmark action Environment Neural Surveillance provides real time crime recognition datasets such as HMDB-51 [6] (Human Motion alerts. The system uses a low-light video feed processed DataBase), UCF-101 [7] (University of Central Florida), in real-time by an optical-flow network, spatial and temporal and Sports-1M [8] contain primarily daytime videos. UCF networks, and a Support Vector Machine to identify released the UCF-Crime dataset [9] for general anomaly shootings, assaults, and thefts. We create a low-light actionrecognition detection and recognizes 13 crime categories, including arrest, dataset, LENS-4, which will be publicly available.

A New Basis for Sparse PCA

arXiv.org Machine Learning

The statistical and computational performance of sparse principal component analysis (PCA) can be dramatically improved when the principal components are allowed to be sparse in a rotated eigenbasis. For this, we propose a new method for sparse PCA. In the simplest version of the algorithm, the component scores and loadings are initialized with a low-rank singular value decomposition. Then, the singular vectors are rotated with orthogonal rotations to make them approximately sparse. Finally, soft-thresholding is applied to the rotated singular vectors. This approach differs from prior approaches because it uses an orthogonal rotation to approximate a sparse basis. Our sparse PCA framework is versatile; for example, it extends naturally to the two-way analysis of a data matrix for simultaneous dimensionality reduction of rows and columns. We identify the close relationship between sparse PCA and independent component analysis for separating sparse signals. We provide empirical evidence showing that for the same level of sparsity, the proposed sparse PCA method is more stable and can explain more variance compared to alternative methods. Through three applications---sparse coding of images, analysis of transcriptome sequencing data, and large-scale clustering of Twitter accounts, we demonstrate the usefulness of sparse PCA in exploring modern multivariate data.

Coupling Learning of Complex Interactions

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Complex applications such as big data analytics involve different forms of coupling relationships that reflect interactions between factors related to technical, business (domain-specific) and environmental (including socio-cultural and economic) aspects. There are diverse forms of couplings embedded in poor-structured and ill-structured data. Such couplings are ubiquitous, implicit and/or explicit, objective and/or subjective, heterogeneous and/or homogeneous, presenting complexities to existing learning systems in statistics, mathematics and computer sciences, such as typical dependency, association and correlation relationships. Modeling and learning such couplings thus is fundamental but challenging. This paper discusses the concept of coupling learning, focusing on the involvement of coupling relationships in learning systems. Coupling learning has great potential for building a deep understanding of the essence of business problems and handling challenges that have not been addressed well by existing learning theories and tools. This argument is verified by several case studies on coupling learning, including handling coupling in recommender systems, incorporating couplings into coupled clustering, coupling document clustering, coupled recommender algorithms and coupled behavior analysis for groups.

Multimodal Text Style Transfer for Outdoor Vision-and-Language Navigation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In the vision-and-language navigation (VLN) task, an agent follows natural language instructions and navigate in visual environments. Compared to the indoor navigation task that has been broadly studied, navigation in real-life outdoor environments remains a significant challenge with its complicated visual inputs and an insufficient amount of instructions that illustrate the intricate urban scenes. In this paper, we introduce a Multimodal Text Style Transfer (MTST) learning approach to mitigate the problem of data scarcity in outdoor navigation tasks by effectively leveraging external multimodal resources. We first enrich the navigation data by transferring the style of the instructions generated by Google Maps API, then pre-train the navigator with the augmented external outdoor navigation dataset. Experimental results show that our MTST learning approach is model-agnostic, and our MTST approach significantly outperforms the baseline models on the outdoor VLN task, improving task completion rate by 22\% relatively on the test set and achieving new state-of-the-art performance.

Prescribing Deep Attentive Score Prediction Attracts Improved Student Engagement

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have been developed to provide students with personalized learning experiences by adaptively generating learning paths optimized for each individual. Within the vast scope of ITS, score prediction stands out as an area of study that enables students to construct individually realistic goals based on their current position. Via the expected score provided by the ITS, a student can instantaneously compare one's expected score to one's actual score, which directly corresponds to the reliability that the ITS can instill. In other words, refining the precision of predicted scores strictly correlates to the level of confidence that a student may have with an ITS, which will evidently ensue improved student engagement. However, previous studies have solely concentrated on improving the performance of a prediction model, largely lacking focus on the benefits generated by its practical application. In this paper, we demonstrate that the accuracy of the score prediction model deployed in a real-world setting significantly impacts user engagement by providing empirical evidence. To that end, we apply a state-of-the-art deep attentive neural network-based score prediction model to Santa, a multi-platform English ITS with approximately 780K users in South Korea that exclusively focuses on the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communications) standardized examinations. We run a controlled A/B test on the ITS with two models, respectively based on collaborative filtering and deep attentive neural networks, to verify whether the more accurate model engenders any student engagement. The results conclude that the attentive model not only induces high student morale (e.g. higher diagnostic test completion ratio, number of questions answered, etc.) but also encourages active engagement (e.g. higher purchase rate, improved total profit, etc.) on Santa.

From Spectrum Wavelet to Vertex Propagation: Graph Convolutional Networks Based on Taylor Approximation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Graph convolutional networks (GCN) have been recently applied to semi-supervised classification problems with fewer labeled data and higher-dimensional features. Existing GCNs mostly rely on a first-order Chebyshev approximation of the graph wavelet-kernels. Such a generic propagation model may not always be well suited for the datasets. This work revisits the fundamentals of graph wavelet and explores the utility of spectral wavelet-kernels to signal propagation in the vertex domain. We first derive the conditions for representing the graph wavelet-kernels via vertex propagation. We next propose alternative propagation models for GCN layers based on Taylor expansions. We further analyze the choices of detailed propagation models. We test the proposed Taylor-based GCN (TGCN) in citation networks and 3D point clouds to demonstrate its advantages over traditional GCN methods.
