OpenAI's Codex looks impressive -- and slightly scary

#artificialintelligence

OpenAI has released a new version of Codex, an AI system that translates written language into code. The company unveiled the upgraded software on Tuesday. It looks like a seriously powerful programming tool -- and a slightly scary one. In a live demo, OpenAI used the system to convert written English commands into simple games and websites. Here's how your business can benefit from free citizen data Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, said the system is merely a rudimentary version of what's possible.

Watch out, GPT-3, here comes AI21's 'Jurassic' language model

#artificialintelligence

Such is just one of the attributes of Jurassic, a computer program introduced Wednesday by Tel Aviv-based artificial intelligence startup AI21 Labs. GPT-3, of course, is the language program from the San Francisco-based startup OpenAI that rocked the world in 2020 by generating sentences and whole articles that seemed quite human-like. GPT-3 also shocked the world by being kept inside a fairly restrictive beta testing arrangement by OpenAI. AI21 is promising to go OpenAI not one better, but two better, with what it claims are superior benchmark results on a test known as ยซ few shot learning, ยป and a more open program for beta testers. On the latter score, AI21 is making development use of the program available as an ยซ open beta, ยป it said, where anyone can sign up to use the program and there is ยซ no wait list.

Without Code for DeepMind's Protein AI, One Lab Wrote Its Own

WIRED

For biologists who study the structure of proteins, the recent history of their field is divided into two epochs: before CASP14, the 14th biennial round of the Critical Assessment of Protein Structure conference, and after. In the decades before, scientists had spent years slowly chipping away at the problem of how to predict the structure of a protein from the sequence of amino acids that it comprises. After CASP14, which took place in December 2020, the problem had effectively been solved, by researchers at the Google subsidiary DeepMind. A research company focused on a branch of artificial intelligence known as "deep learning," DeepMind had previously made headlines by building an AI system that beat the Go world champion. But their success at protein structure prediction, which they achieved using a neural network they call AlphaFold2, represented the first time they had built a model that could solve a problem of real scientific relevance.

Artificial Intelligence: Everything About AI

#artificialintelligence

Why is Artificial Intelligence important? Artificial intelligence can cover almost everything from search engine algorithms to robotics. Complex tasks, including those requiring human intelligence, can be accomplished by these machines. AI uses a variety of approaches such as deep learning and machine learning to make things more natural. At the heart of artificial intelligence is the computer science industry, which goal is to create or reproduce human intelligence in machines.

OpenAI Codex and GPT-3

#artificialintelligence

A few months ago Sam Altman wrote a blog post called Moore's Law for Everything. In it, he spoke about what the world could look like as AI becomes more advanced. First what is an API and GPT-3? We will start with an API. An application programming interface (API) is a connection that allows computers or computer programmes to communicate with one another.

Israel's 10 'Hottest' Startups In 2021, According To WIRED

#artificialintelligence

Israel's tech and innovation ecosystem has had a monumental year so far in 2021, breaking funding records and yielding 10 new unicorns โ€“ private companies valued at $1 billion or more -- just in the first three months of the year, more than any country in Europe. Israeli high-tech activity on public markets also increased significantly this year, a trend reflected in the number of IPOs, SPAC (special-purpose acquisition company) transactions, and follow-on offerings. "Year in and year out, Tel Aviv's startup community has proven that it can achieve more than whole countries within its 52km2, thanks to investment in world-class research facilities, robust government support, and an ever-reliable influx of investment," writes WIRED UK Contributor Allyssia Alleyne in a new post this week highlighting 10 "hottest startups from Tel Aviv as part of the UK edition of the American tech publication's annual round-up (except in 2020) of Europe's 100 hottest startups. They include startups and companies from London, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Barcelona, Dublin, Helsinki, Berlin, Paris, and Lisbon. These 100 companies "are a cohort like no other," says Greg Williams, the deputy global editorial director of WIRED. "They survived an unprecedented year, embodying what entrepreneurial spirit is all about." The companies, featured in the September/October issue on newsstands this month, are not necessarily "the largest, best-known or most-funded," but they "are generating buzz" and they are organizations "people are talking about and inspired by," added Williams. The Tel Aviv entry is a mix of established companies with prominent backers, high-flying unicorns, and determined startups. Many operate in the deep tech sector. "Tel Aviv has long been known as a place where founders have built innovative companies in verticals such as fintech and cybersecurity.
