Microsoft snatches Sam Altman and former OpenAI colleagues to form its own AI research team
In another twist on the OpenAI saga that raged over the weekend, Microsoft has swooped in and hired Sam Altman and Greg Brockman just after OpenAI confirmed Altman won't be returning, CEO Satya Nadella announced in a post on X. The pair, along with colleagues are joining Microsoft "to lead a new advanced AI research team." Nadella added that Microsoft "remain[s] committed to our partnership with OpenAI," but the move looks a giant hedge on that bet. It also means the much of OpenAI's talent may be moving to Microsoft, which may stall progress on the widely-used ChatGPT product. We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners.

OpenAI Board Hires Emmett Shear as CEO, Rejecting Campaign to Reinstate Sam Altman
OpenAI's board hired former Twitch chief Emmett Shear as chief executive officer, defying calls from investors to reinstate the ousted Sam Altman, according to people familiar with the matter. Shear stepped down as CEO of Amazon's game-streaming site Twitch earlier this year. He won over directors because he appeared to recognize the existential threats that AI presented, one of the people said. A computer scientist who spent more than a decade building Twitch into one of the world's most successful video platforms, Shear is regarded as having the heft to lead a large engineering group, the person added. Like some members of OpenAI's board, Shear has ties to the AI-skeptical effective altruism movement, which sees risks posed by advanced AI.
Sam Altman will not return as OpenAI CEO after talks fail โ reports
Sam Altman will reportedly not be returning as chief executive of ChatGPT developer OpenAI after talks to reinstate him failed. The non-profit board of the San Francisco-based company has instead installed Emmett Shear, co-founder of video streaming site Twitch, as OpenAI's third CEO in three days, according to multiple reports. Altman was fired on Friday after being accused of not being "consistently candid in communications" with the board in a move that sent shockwaves through Silicon Valley. OpenAI's investors, led by Microsoft, then led an attempt to reinstate Altman and talks over an about-turn took place at the weekend โ with Altman tweeting a picture of himself wearing a guest pass outside OpenAI's offices. However, the talks failed and OpenAI's board has appointed Shear as interim CEO, replacing Altman's short-lived temporary successor Mira Murati.
Sam Altman won't return to OpenAI despite company's overtures, report says
Sam Altman, the ousted CEO of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, will not return to the company he co-founded despite executives' efforts to bring him back, tech news site The Information has reported. Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI co-founder and board director, told staff on Sunday night that Altman would not be coming back after a weekend of negotiations with the board of directors, company leaders and investors, The Information reported on Sunday. Emmett Shear, co-founder of video streaming site Twitch, will take over as interim CEO, The Information said. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Al Jazeera. Altman, who became the public face of artificial intelligence with the releases of ChatGPT and GPT-4, was abruptly fired on Friday after the company's board determined he was "not consistently candid in his communications".
Sam Altman will not be returning to OpenAI
Talks over reinstating co-founder and former CEO Sam Altman at OpenAI have apparently broken down. According to The Information and Bloomberg, the board has now hired Altman's fellow Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear as OpenAI's new interim CEO. This appointment was apparently announced internally by co-founder and board director Ilya Sutskever. Altman was originally fired from OpenAI over "a breakdown in communication between Sam and the board," according to an oddly blunt internal staff memo published by Axios earlier. The news was subsequently followed by resignations from several key members, including co-founder Greg Brockman -- who was ousted as the chairman of the board -- along with a few senior researchers.
Sam Altman's Attempt to Return as OpenAI CEO Fails as Board Turns to ex-Twitch CEO
It took Steve Jobs 12 years to return as CEO after leaving the company he cofounded, and it looked like ousted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman might do it in three days. But late Sunday Emmett Shear, who formerly led Amazon's streaming platform Twitch, was appointed interim CEO at the AI company, according to multiple outlets. The Information first reported Shear's appointment. Shear and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Shear's arrival follows a dramatic and chaotic weekend at the world's most prominent artificial intelligence company, which develops the ChatGPT chatbot.
OpenAI stands by its ouster of Sam Altman. Emmett Shear named interim CEO
The latest development came after a chaotic weekend, where OpenAI investors and employees, blindsided by the board's move to fire Altman on Friday, mounted a campaign to get him reinstated. In its vague statement explaining the rationale for his ouster, OpenAI had said Altman wasn't always "candid" in his communications with them. The news reverberated through Silicon Valley and the halls of government, where Altman had become a major influencer of policy and regulation on AI.
Sam Altman will not return as CEO of OpenAI, report says
Sam Altman will not return as the CEO of OpenAI and ex-Twitch boss Emmett Shear will become the new interim CEO, The Information reported on Sunday, citing board director Ilya Sutskever's statement to the company's staff. Shear co-founded Twitch and had stepped down from the Amazon-owned live video streaming platform earlier this year. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
