Imperialist Competitive Algorithm with Independence and Constrained Assimilation for Solving 0-1 Multidimensional Knapsack Problem

The multidimensional knapsack problem is a well-known constrained optimization problem with many real-world engineering applications. In order to solve this NPhard problem, a new modified Imperialist Competitive Algorithm with Constrained Assimilation (ICAwICA) is presented. The proposed algorithm introduces the concept of colony independence - a free will to choose between classical ICA assimilation to empire's imperialist or any other imperialist in the population. Furthermore, a constrained assimilation process has been implemented that combines classical ICA assimilation and revolution operators, while maintaining population diversity. This work investigates the performance of the proposed algorithm across 101 Multidimensional Knapsack Problem (MKP) benchmark instances. Experimental results show that the algorithm is able to obtain an optimal solution in all small instances and presents very competitive results for large MKP instances.


Agile Earth observation satellite scheduling over 20 years: formulations, methods and future directions

Agile satellites with advanced attitude maneuvering capability are the new generation of Earth observation satellites (EOSs). The continuous improvement in satellite technology and decrease in launch cost have boosted the development of agile EOSs (AEOSs). To efficiently employ the increasing orbiting AEOSs, the AEOS scheduling problem (AEOSSP) aiming to maximize the entire observation profit while satisfying all complex operational constraints, has received much attention over the past 20 years. The objectives of this paper are thus to summarize current research on AEOSSP, identify main accomplishments and highlight potential future research directions. To this end, general definitions of AEOSSP with operational constraints are described initially, followed by its three typical variations including different definitions of observation profit, multi-objective function and autonomous model. A detailed literature review from 1997 up to 2019 is then presented in line with four different solution methods, i.e., exact method, heuristic, metaheuristic and machine learning. Finally, we discuss a number of topics worth pursuing in the future.


Improved Binary Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm

The Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm is an evolutionary optimization algorithm based on swarm intelligence and inspired by the honey bees' food search behavior. Since the ABC algorithm has been developed to achieve optimal solutions by searching in the continuous search space, modification is required to apply this method to binary optimization problems. In this paper, we improve the ABC algorithm to solve binary optimization problems and call it the improved binary Artificial Bee Colony (ibinABC). The proposed method consists of an update mechanism based on fitness values and processing different number of decision variables. Thus, we aim to prevent the ABC algorithm from getting stuck in a local minimum by increasing its exploration ability. We compare the ibinABC algorithm with three variants of the ABC and other meta-heuristic algorithms in the literature. For comparison, we use the wellknown OR-Library dataset containing 15 problem instances prepared for the uncapacitated facility location problem. Computational results show that the proposed method is superior to other methods in terms of convergence speed and robustness. A modified single and multi-objective bacteria foraging optimization for the solution of quadratic assignment problem

Non-polynomial hard (NP-hard) problems are challenging because no polynomial-time algorithm has yet been discovered to solve them in polynomial time. The Bacteria Foraging Optimization (BFO) algorithm is one of the metaheuristics algorithms that is mostly used for NP-hard problems. BFO is inspired by the behavior of the bacteria foraging such as Escherichia coli (E-coli). The aim of BFO is to eliminate those bacteria that have weak foraging properties and maintain those bacteria that have breakthrough foraging properties toward the optimum. Despite the strength of this algorithm, most of the problems reaching optimal solutions are time-demanding or impossible. In this paper, we modified single objective BFO by adding a mutation operator and multi-objective BFO (MOBFO) by adding mutation and crossover from genetic algorithm operators to update the solutions in each generation, and local tabu search algorithm to reach the local optimum solution. Additionally, we used a fast nondominated sort algorithm in MOBFO to find the best-nondominated solutions in each generation. We evaluated the performance of the proposed algorithms through a number of single and multi-objective Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) instances. The experimental results show that our approaches outperform some previous optimization algorithms in both convergent and divergent solutions.


A Comparative Study on Parameter Estimation in Software Reliability Modeling using Swarm Intelligence

This work focuses on a comparison between the performances of two well-known Swarm algorithms: Cuckoo Search (CS) and Firefly Algorithm (FA), in estimating the parameters of Software Reliability Growth Models. This study is further reinforced using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). All algorithms are evaluated according to real software failure data, the tests are performed and the obtained results are compared to show the performance of each of the used algorithms. Furthermore, CS and FA are also compared with each other on bases of execution time and iteration number. Experimental results show that CS is more efficient in estimating the parameters of SRGMs, and it has outperformed FA in addition to PSO and ACO for the selected Data sets and employed models.


Neighborhood Information-based Probabilistic Algorithm for Network Disintegration

Many real-world applications can be modelled as complex networks, and such networks include the Internet, epidemic disease networks, transport networks, power grids, protein-folding structures and others. Network integrity and robustness are important to ensure that crucial networks are protected and undesired harmful networks can be dismantled. Network structure and integrity can be controlled by a set of key nodes, and to find the optimal combination of nodes in a network to ensure network structure and integrity can be an NP-complete problem. Despite extensive studies, existing methods have many limitations and there are still many unresolved problems. This paper presents a probabilistic approach based on neighborhood information and node importance, namely, neighborhood information-based probabilistic algorithm (NIPA). We also define a new centrality-based importance measure (IM), which combines the contribution ratios of the neighbor nodes of each target node and two-hop node information. Our proposed NIPA has been tested for different network benchmarks and compared with three other methods: optimal attack strategy (OAS), high betweenness first (HBF) and high degree first (HDF). Experiments suggest that the proposed NIPA is most effective among all four methods. In general, NIPA can identify the most crucial node combination with higher effectiveness, and the set of optimal key nodes found by our proposed NIPA is much smaller than that by heuristic centrality prediction. In addition, many previously neglected weakly connected nodes are identified, which become a crucial part of the newly identified optimal nodes. Thus, revised strategies for protection are recommended to ensure the safeguard of network integrity. Further key issues and future research topics are also discussed.


Shahryar Origami Optimization (SOO): A Novel Approach for Solving Large-scale Expensive Optimization Problems Efficiently

Many real-world problems are categorized as large-scale problems, and metaheuristic algorithms as an alternative method to solve large-scale problem; they need the evaluation of many candidate solutions to tackle them prior to their convergence, which is not affordable for practical applications since the most of them are computationally expensive. In other words, these problems are not only large-scale but also computationally expensive, that makes them very difficult to solve. There is no efficient surrogate model to support large-scale expensive global optimization (LSEGO) problems. As a result, the algorithms should address LSEGO problems using a limited computational budget to be applicable in real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a simple novel algorithm called Shahryar Origami Optimization (SOO) algorithm to tackle LSEGO problems with a limited computational budget. Our proposed algorithm benefits from two leading steps, namely, finding the region of interest and then shrinkage of the search space by folding it into the half with exponential speed. One of the main advantages of the proposed algorithm is being free of any control parameters, which makes it far from the intricacies of the tuning process. The proposed algorithm is compared with cooperative co-evolution with delta grouping on 20 benchmark functions with dimension 1000. Also, we conducted some experiments on CEC-2017, D=10, 30, 50, and 100 to investigate the behavior of SOO algorithm in lower dimensions. The results show that SOO is beneficial not only in large-scale problems, but also in low-scale optimization problems.


AutoML-Zero: Evolving Machine Learning Algorithms From Scratch

Machine learning research has advanced in multiple aspects, including model structures and learning methods. The effort to automate such research, known as AutoML, has also made significant progress. However, this progress has largely focused on the architecture of neural networks, where it has relied on sophisticated expert-designed layers as building blocks---or similarly restrictive search spaces. Our goal is to show that AutoML can go further: it is possible today to automatically discover complete machine learning algorithms just using basic mathematical operations as building blocks. We demonstrate this by introducing a novel framework that significantly reduces human bias through a generic search space. Despite the vastness of this space, evolutionary search can still discover two-layer neural networks trained by backpropagation. These simple neural networks can then be surpassed by evolving directly on tasks of interest, e.g. CIFAR-10 variants, where modern techniques emerge in the top algorithms, such as bilinear interactions, normalized gradients, and weight averaging. Moreover, evolution adapts algorithms to different task types: e.g., dropout-like techniques appear when little data is available. We believe these preliminary successes in discovering machine learning algorithms from scratch indicate a promising new direction for the field.


Interactive Constrained MAP-Elites Analysis and Evaluation of the Expressiveness of the Feature Dimensions

We propose the Interactive Constrained MAP-Elites, a quality-diversity solution for game content generation, implemented as a new feature of the Evolutionary Dungeon Designer: a mixed-initiative co-creativity tool for designing dungeons. The feature uses the MAP-Elites algorithm, an illumination algorithm that segregates the population among several cells depending on their scores with respect to different behavioral dimensions. Users can flexibly and dynamically alternate between these dimensions anytime, thus guiding the evolutionary process in an intuitive way, and then incorporate suggestions produced by the algorithm in their room designs. At the same time, any modifications performed by the human user will feed back into MAP-Elites, closing a circular workflow of constant mutual inspiration. This paper presents the algorithm followed by an in-depth analysis of its behaviour, with the aims of evaluating the expressive range of all possible dimension combinations in several scenarios, as well as discussing their influence in the fitness landscape and in the overall performance of the mixed-initiative procedural content generation.


Novel Meta-Heuristic Model for Discrimination between Iron Deficiency Anemia and B-Thalassemia with CBC Indices Based on Dynamic Harmony Search

In recent decades, attention has been directed at anemia classification for various medical purposes, such as thalassemia screening and predicting iron deficiency anemia (IDA). In this study, a new method has been successfully tested for discrimination between IDA and \b{eta}-thalassemia trait (\b{eta}-TT). The method is based on a Dynamic Harmony Search (DHS). Complete blood count (CBC), a fast and inexpensive laboratory test, is used as the input of the system. Other models, such as a genetic programming method called structured representation on genetic algorithm in non-linear function fitting (STROGANOFF), an artificial neural network (ANN), an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), a support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and certain traditional methods, are compared with the proposed method.
