Study identifies brain-based dimensions of mental health disorders using machine learning

#artificialintelligence

A new study using machine learning has identified brain-based dimensions of mental health disorders, an advance towards much-needed biomarkers to more accurately diagnose and treat patients. A team at Penn Medicine led by Theodore D. Satterthwaite, MD, an assistant professor in the department of Psychiatry, mapped abnormalities in brain networks to four dimensions of psychopathology: mood, psychosis, fear, and disruptive externalizing behavior. The research is published in Nature Communications this week. Currently, psychiatry relies on patient reporting and physician observations alone for clinical decision making, while other branches of medicine have incorporated biomarkers to aid in diagnosis, determination of prognosis, and selection of treatment for patients. While previous studies using standard clinical diagnostic categories have found evidence for brain abnormalities, the high level of diversity within disorders and comorbidity between disorders has limited how this kind of research may lead to improvements in clinical care.

Use public procurement to boost artificial intelligence, urge Lords - Supply Management

#artificialintelligence

The public sector should use targeted procurement to boost the development and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK, according to Lords. In a report, the House of Lords Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence said the UK was "in a strong position to be among the world leaders in the development of artificial intelligence" and the technology, if "handled carefully", could solve complex problems and improve productivity. In evidence, the committee was told the use of AI across government departments and the public sector could save an estimated £4bn a year and "enable more informed policy decisions". The report said the government's annual spend of £45bn on goods and services gave it "immense power in encouraging the adoption of new behaviours and practices in its supply chains". The report said Brexit provided an opportunity to alter EU public procurement rules "to ensure that these rules and thresholds benefit businesses in the UK, in particular when it comes to public sector procurement and the stimulation of a fertile AI development sector, as long as it is still a competitive process".

Hyper Chariot: 4,000mph pods could go from London to Edinburgh in 8 minutes, company claims

The Independent - Tech

People could soon travel from London to Edinburgh in eight minutes, claims Hyper Chariot, a company that has announced its intention to build an extremely ambitious new transport system. It would be capable of reaching speeds of 4,000mph, and could also be emission-free and 100 per cent solar-powered, "thanks to the use of solar panels mounted on the outside of the tunnels", according to the company. It says it wants the network to be fully operational by 2040, and plans to unveil a working'proof of concept' demonstrator, called'The Velocitator', in 2021. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Canada Introduces Rules for Recreational Drone Users

U.S. News

Canada is bringing in strict measures and fines for recreational users of drones. Transport Minister Marc Garneau on Thursday announced restrictions to curb the number of incidents in which recreational drones have come too close to planes, which has more than tripled since 2014. Recreational drone operators must now mark their drone with their contact information and are forbidden to fly them at night or in cloudy conditions. Drones will no longer be allowed to fly higher than 90 meters (295 feet), within 75 meters (245 feet) of any buildings, vehicles or people, or within 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) of airports. Violators are subject to a fine of up to $3,000 Canadian (US$2,251), and up to $15,000 Canadian (US$11,256) for corporations.

Startup Wizer releases AI-based marketing survey platform

#artificialintelligence

The platform parses various business reports and other sources to assemble background information in specific industry verticals, like ready meals or food/beverages. Currently, the focus is on consumer packaged goods (CPG) and retailers, although new categories can be built. Marketers define goals, then answer a series of questions. The platform pulls appropriate questions from hundreds pre-written by human researchers, and the questions are auto-assembled, without any writing by the marketer, into an online questionnaire of 25–30 questions. The platform learns about a specific business from the questionnaire's results and feedback from the business.

Veteran CHP officer arrested in child pornography case

A veteran California Highway Patrol officer is on administrative leave after being arrested this week on suspicion of transmitting child pornography. Placer County sheriff's detectives arrested Patrick Francis Cooney Jr., around 4 p.m. Monday.
