Man and Machine: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, Cybersecurity, and Society
On Oct. 13, 2016, the White House hosted the "White House Frontiers Conference" (#WHFrontiers) on the #FutureofAI. The White House had also released two reports on artificial intelligence ("AI") the previous day: (1) Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence on the current state of AI, the existing and potential applications of AI, and the societal and public policy questions relevant to AI, and (2) The National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan for Federally-funded research and development in AI. As stated in the Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence report, "Future AI systems could perform predictive analytics to anticipate cyberattacks by generating dynamic threat models from available data sources that are voluminous, ever-changing, and often incomplete." To this end, a representative from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) at the #WHFrontiers conference highlighted the "promise of artificial intelligence" in view of the recent Cyber Grand Challenge. The DARPA representative stated that, with artificial intelligence, cyber-attacks could be addressed in minutes and not hours, days, or months.
Actors and video game companies clash over safety and pay
As one of the most in-demand voice-over actors in Hollywood, Phil LaMarr has worked on a slew of prominent video games, including the "Metal Gear" and "Star Wars" series, last year's "Mortal Kombat X" and the "Injustice" superhero games. The former "MADtv" cast member has experienced some of the physical perils that come with this burgeoning segment of the acting profession. He once worked on a "Terminator 3" game where he was required to shout and scream, and "threw my voice out in under 30 minutes," LaMarr recalled. More recently, he performed a motion-capture role on a game in which he was asked to dangle from a scaffolding. The production, which he declined to name, lacked a stunt coordinator who could ensure his safety.
Breaking the Black Box: How Machines Learn to Be Racist
This is the fourth installment in a series that aims to explain and peer inside the black-box algorithms that increasingly dominate our lives. Early computers were mostly just big calculators, helping us process large numbers. Now, however, computers are so powerful that they are learning how to make decisions on their own in the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence. But AI-enabled machines are only as smart as the knowledge they have been fed. Microsoft learned that lesson the hard way earlier this year when it released an AI Twitter bot called Tay that had been trained to talk like a Millennial teen.
Trump refuses to commit to accepting vote, Airbnb faces NYC eviction and a plea against helicopter parenting
Donald Trump refused to guarantee that he would accept the result of the US election if he loses, in a fiery third and final presidential debate in which Hillary Clinton accused her Republican rival of being a "puppet" of Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to a YouGov poll, 49 per cent of respondents said Mrs Clinton won the debate, while 39 per cent thought Mr Trump the victor. Here is what FT readers thought. Airbnb faces fight for survival in NYC Governor Andrew Cuomo is preparing to sign a bill that would in effect end the home-sharing company's business in New York City. The San Francisco-based company has waged a last-minute campaign to thwart the law, which would impose fines of up to 7,500 on any host who advertised short-term accommodation through Airbnb.
eBay's (EBAY) Devin Wenig on Q3 2016 Results - Earnings Call Transcript
Replatforming a business of our size and scale takes time. However, our pace of innovation is accelerating. We're increasingly using structured data and artificial intelligence to transform shopping on eBay, delivering more personalization capabilities, continuing to iterate our mobile experience, and bringing more unique inventory and categories to our customers. We've got more work to do, but I'm confident we're on the right path. Now, let me turn it over to Scott, and he'll provide more details on our Q3 results.
Tesla announces fully self-driving fleet
Tesla is partnering with Panasonic to supply batteries for its upcoming Model 3. Newslook Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to his company to acquire SolarCity. SAN FRANCISCO -- Tesla's fleet is going autonomous. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Wednesday that its Model S, X and forthcoming Model 3 sedan will start being outfitted with "the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver." That constitutes full Level 5 autonomy, which doesn't require any driver involvement. That's the ultimate goal for a range of automakers and tech companies, including Google, Ford and Volvo, which have vowed to produce such self-driving vehicles by 2021.
Stephen Hawking says artificial intelligence could be humanity's greatest disaster
The invention of artificial intelligence could be the biggest disaster in humanity's history, Professor Stephen Hawking has said, warning that if they are not properly managed, thinking machines could spell the end for civilisation. "The rise of powerful AI will be either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity. We do not know which," the British physicist said. He was speaking at the opening of a new Cambridge centre that will seek to address the potential dangers and conundrums of AI. Professor Hawking, a prominent critic of making unchecked advances in AI, said that the technology promised to bring great benefits, such as eradicating disease and poverty, but "will also bring dangers, like powerful autonomous weapons or new ways for the few to oppress the many".
ProPublica Reveals Discriminatory Pricing By Computer Algorithms
We are relying more and more on machines to make decisions for us -- which route to take, what to buy and where to buy it -- but we have no idea how these decisions are made. NPR's Robert Siegel talks with Julia Angwin, a ProPublica reporter, who has spent the year with her team looking at algorithms companies use to decide everything from what headlines we will read to what we will pay for a product. Among her most surprising findings, Asians were nearly twice as likely to get that higher price on SAT prep courses from The Princeton Review than non-Asians.
The Future of Retail is not E-Commerce. The Current Model of Internet will Disappear!
Today with the growth of the internet of things there is a surge in usage of fast internet, smartphones, portable devices, smart TV, smart wearable and connected cars among retail consumers. This indicates the rise of connected consumers. This has made the huge impact in the retail landscape and the retail experience is evolving from multi-channel to Omni-channel. The connected consumer requires connected retail. Omni-channel retailing means establishing a presence on many channels and platforms (i.e. Physical stores remain the foundation of retailing, evidenced by the fact that - in the internet era, 90% of retail sales still take place in physical stores. According to eMarketer, the total retail sales in the US topped 4.53 trillion in 2013, of this brick-and-mortar sales still command a vast majority of the retail market nearly 4.27 trillion. According to A.T. Kearney, 95 percent of all retail sales are captured by retailers with a brick-and-mortar presence in total retail. Two-thirds of consumers who purchase online use the store before or after the transaction. The role of the brick & mortar store is changing, NOT going away. Stores remain at the heart of retailers' relationships with consumers, even in today's "Omni Channel" world where online and physical sales appear to rule. According to a report, When it comes to product trial and tests, respondents indicate a clear preference for physical stores. Despite the growing popularity of e-commerce and digital retailing are capturing headlines in news media and inspiring spirited debates (blah, blah..) retailers plan how best to invest for future success, including a plan to build an another planet. The e-commerce retail market share is only 263 billion. It is only 5.8% of the market share. Small basket, single channel, ineffective delivery, can't see, can't feel or try made it as a hard business model. Is pure play e-commerce is an unprofitable business model? Investment on e-commerce is "river of no returns"? Are we nearing the end of the e-commerce bubble? Is M-commerce the future of retail? Drop out, make an app, go viral and make money?
IoT news - WISeKey to Integrate Artificial Intelligence at Chip Level into Its IoT Cybersecurity Vertical Platform
While IoT remains wildly insecure, thanks to the integrated solution operated by the WISeKey Vertical Platform, IoT devices would be able to organize themselves into trusted networks based on mutual authentication, identity and integrity. This trusted cybersecurity platform will only enable IoT devices which can provide a recognized identity and a valid integrity report to communicate with peer devices that are part of the trusted community. Adding AI at the chip level together with the WISeKey RoT it will allow the IoT to provide authenticated sensor data. Current IoT data do not provide value for their manufacturers unless it can be converted into actionable, contextualized information generated by IoT sensors fully identifiable. The majority of IoT devices are not built with embedded secured systems thus are very vulnerable.
