Darwinian Machine Learning: Principles of Machine Learning in Evo-devo, Evo-eco and Evolutionary Transitions in Individuality

Current evolutionary theory describes a Darwinian machine – i.e., heritable variation in reproductive success that assumes fixed mechanisms of variation and selection operating on a fixed reproductive unit. But, in fact, none of these mechanisms is fixed in nature. For example, the distribution of phenotypic variation changes over evolutionary time as a result of the evolution of development, the selective pressures on traits change as a result of the evolution of ecological interactions, and even the identity of the evolutionary unit changes as a result of the evolution of new reproductive strategies and new mechanisms of inheritance. The circular causality implied by an evolutionary process that alters its own mechanisms results in conceptual difficulties and controversies in many areas of evolutionary biology. However, in computer science, the idea that an algorithmic process can improve over time as a function of past experience, including its own past behaviour, has been thoroughly studied in the field of machine learning.

According to an EY report, the average age globally for a newly minted CFO is 42. Unsurprisingly, they're a highly educated bunch, with 27% of CFO's surveyed having completed an MBA and 27% holding a chartered accountancy qualification. Highly educated talent with years of experience usually doesn't come cheap. And for small to medium businesses, this could mean forking out a salary in the range of 130,000 to 250,000 to land themselves a C-Suite financial executive. So with CFO's trading at premium, is there any way the knowledge, analytical brains and strategic insights a CFO possesses could be mass produced for less? For companies turning over between 1M to 5M per year, deep learning, big data and AI is quite possibly the answer.

Here's the technology news you need to know this Tuesday. The FBI says it has hacked into the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone without Apple's help. The fact that the FBI was apparently able to get the encrypted data without Apple's help raised new security questions about Apple's devices. The photo app plans to completely change the way its feed works by algorithmically ranking photos, instead of showing them in reverse chronological order. NTT Data Corp wants to expand in North America and improve its services business.

DARPA Wants to Give Radio Waves AI to Stretch Bandwidth

The radio spectrum is a mess: It's congested, expensive and there's no room for expansion. But DARPA has a plan to change that, by building a system where radio waves can work together using artificial intelligence, rathe than fighting for space. DARPA launched its latest Grand Challenge last week, and it plans to encourage researchers around the world to develop "smart systems that collaboratively, rather than competitively, adapt in real time to today's fast-changing, congested spectrum environment... to maximize the flow of radio frequency." That sounds exciting, because making radio frequency flow more easily means--theoretically, at least --faster data rates, fewer dropped signals, and cheaper connections. How does it plan to do it?

While researching the Fast Forward Labs Deep Learning: Image Analysis report, we played with a lot of very cool technology. These APIs accept images and/or video, and quickly classify objects, ideas, and items shown in the images and video. Liverpool FC sponsor Standard Chartered invests in robots and artificial intelligence

Banking group Standard Chartered, Liverpool FC's shirt sponsor, is aiming to use robots or artificial intelligence to offer bespoke wealth advice or handle customer enquiries. The Asia-facing bank has hired thousands of extra compliance officers in a bid to stick to regulations. In 2013 the bank was fined 650m by US authorities for breaching sanctions on trading with Iran. Last year it announced its regulatory costs had risen 44% to 447m due to an increase in investment in its financial crime risk compliance capability. Now, chief executive Bill Winters wants to tap into technology to avoid further regulatory problems.
