What it Takes to Deliver Successful AI-Driven Search
Artificial intelligence (AI) promises to deliver enterprises higher efficiency, increased accuracy and greater utilization of corporate information assets. But these promises can only come true if the AI is built on a solid information architecture. While many would like to believe that AI is combination of magic and pixie dust, for human-to-machine conversations to become reliable, a significant amount of foundational effort must take place. And this process begins with the basics of knowledge management. Developing a framework starts with the concept of a "domain model."
Nest developing a security system that recognizes visitors
Alphabet's smart thermostat Nest will not only monitor the temperature in your home, but it could soon keep an eye on your front door. The firm is developing an end-to-end home security solution consisting of alarm sensors and an upgraded camera system that identifies visitors using facial recognition. The system will be similar to other smart locks, as it lets homeowners see who is at their door and grant entry to specific visitors using only their smartphone. Nest is developing an end-to-end home security solution consisting alarm sensors and an upgraded camera system that identifies visitors using face-recognition. Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Nest is expanding its security product line.
Microsoft And NVIDIA Announce HGX-1 Platform Standard For AI/ML Cloud Computing
NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Ingrasys, a subsidiary of Foxconn) announced today their plans for HGX-1, a hyperscale GPU accelerator for AI and cloud computing. This open-source design is being released in conjunction with Microsoft's Project Olympus initiative at the OCP (Open Compute Project) conference and is designed to give hyperscale datacenters a high performance and flexible path for the machine learning industry. I see this release part of a larger narrative for NVIDIA, which has truly been seeing incredible momentum in cloud/hyperscale over the past year--their Tesla business tripled (yes, tripled) last year. The compute model is changing, and machine learning training currently favors GPU computing--NVIDIA's bread and butter. HGX-1 is a component of Microsoft's Project Olympus contribution to OCP, which, for those who are unfamiliar, is a consortium that is seeking to speed up the pace of innovation by applying the benefits of open source to hardware, which then opens up the design to the OCP community so it can easily be built and deployed.
Ensuring Effective Collaboration Between Data Scientists and Software Engineers
How do you ensure a smooth hand-off between data science and engineering on ML projects? How do you ensure a smooth hand-off between data science and engineering on ML projects? Excellent question, and one that I've been thinking a lot. At Quora, my data science team works closely with machine learning engineers. Joe Isaacson already provided a great answer to this question, and I will add some of my learnings.
Pakistan considers social media ban due to blasphemous content online
An Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge has called for a ban on social media sites in Pakistan, due to the spread of'blasphemous' images online. Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui also wants people found to have posted blasphemous content online to have their names added to the Exit Control List, thereby prohibiting them from leaving the country. "I will go to every extent to bring this case to its logical end and if needed I will even ban social media in Pakistan," he is reported to have said. CIOs: AI Is Now Top Priority for New Technology Investment
Big Data Analytics Tokyo is an event which brings together 400 experts and entrepreneurs from the US and Japanese tech hubs. The event featured 20 talks, panel discussions, business pitch sessions, and lightning talks, where all presentations were bilingual with simultaneous interpretation. Whether you are a business leader, data scientist or investor, this event would be of relevance to you. Presenting at this event was AI Business' Director, Daniel Pitchford, who enlightened the audience about the true business impact of artificial intelligence. Pitchford started off by defining artificial intelligence by looking at practical AI.
Machine Learning in a nutshell, Issue no. 5: Spam classification - Using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) - openForce Information Technology
Last time we discussed where Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) come from and basic concepts behind Multilayer Perceptrons (MLP). This time we use such a MLP for the spam classification problem of issue no. 3. This was good enough for our baseline model, since we just filtered on specific words, numbers and currency symbols. However, real-world machine learning algorithms only understand numbers and thus we need to transform the words into numbers, a task which falls into an area called natural language processing (NLP) which is a huge research area by itself. A very common approach is bag-of-words, where the vocabulary of the problem domain is represented as a sparse vector, where each element of the vector represents a single word and the value is either the number of occurrences in a certain document or just a binary value indicating that the word occurred one or several times, which is also called one-hot-encoding.

NVIDIA Launches Jetson TX2 for AI at the Edge NVIDIA Blog
NVIDIA Tuesday unveiled the NVIDIA Jetson TX2, a credit card-sized platform that puts AI computing to work in the world all around us. At the same time, GPU-based deep learning has given computers the ability to understand -- and react to -- the data streaming in from all these devices in uncanny new ways. Both through training -- which creates smart systems -- and through inference -- which creates systems that are able to react intelligently to the world around them in real time. "We're seeing a lot of this inference not just in the cloud, but also moving towards the edge, whether it's a robot, or a drone or a security camera," Talla said. "And Jetson is our platform for doing inference and AI computing at the edge."
