Movidius Introduces Fathom, A Deep-learning Accelerator On A USB Stick

It's not often a unique product shows up in our email and news feeds, but we became curious over something a little different today: a USB compute module for neural networks and machine learning. Movidius' new Fathom Neural Compute Stick is an ultra-low power processor featuring a Myriad 2 VPU (vision processing unit), providing up to 150 GFLOPS of compute for about 1 Watt of power. Neural networks and machine learning have fascinated people for a long time; teaching machines and computers to think rather than simply'do'. The problem is that it's extremely difficult; not just from a hardware perspective (people aren't binary), but from an academic and psychological perspective too; the how we think. Instead of writing code that goes through images or live camera feeds, doing edge detection, writing more algorithms to define shapes and generally teach the computer what it needs to do (explicitly), neural networks are a way to teach a computer to teach itself โ€“ often creating systems that are faster and more accurate than the hand-coded method.

A humanoid robotic diver has been developed that scientists and archeologists hope will open up a new realm of deep sea exploration. OceanOne, created by researchers at Stanford University, combines artificial intelligence with human-controlled haptic feedback systems to carry out underwater tasks too dangerous for human divers. Guided by a team of deep-sea archeologists, OceanOne has already been used to investigate the shipwreck of La Lune, the flagship vessel of King Louis XIV that sank in 1664 off the southern coast of France. "OceanOne will be your avatar," said Oussama Khatib, a professor of computer science at Stanford. "The intent here is to have a human diving virtually, to put the human out of harm's way.

Mana, with the Infosys Aikido service offerings, dramatically lowers the cost of maintenance for both physical and digital assets; captures the knowledge and know-how of people, and fragmented and complex systems; simplifies the continuous renovation of core business processes; and enables businesses to bring new and delightful user experiences leveraging state of the art technology. "Looking to the future, the next big step will be for the very concept of the'device' to fade away," Pichai wrote in the technology giant's annual founders' letter to shareholders. His vision: Over time, computers, whatever shape they take, a mobile device in your hand or a mini computer on your wrist, "will be an intelligent assistant helping you through your day." Google is far from alone. Artificial intelligence in which Google was a pioneer, is an increasingly crowded field.


You're Asking Too Much of Chat Bots. Just Let Them Grow Up
