Platform-based talent markets help put the emphasis in human-capital management back where it belongs--on humans. The best way to organize corporations--it's a perennial debate. But the discussion is becoming more urgent as digital technology begins to penetrate the labor force. Although consumers have largely gone digital, the digitization of jobs, and of the tasks and activities within them, is still in the early stages, according to a recent study by McKinsey Global Institute (MGI). Even companies and industries at the forefront of digital spending and usage have yet to digitize the workforce fully (Exhibit 1).1 1.See McKinsey Global Institute, "Digital America: A tale of the haves and have-mores," December 2015. The stage is set for sweeping change as artificial intelligence, after years of hype and debate, brings workplace automation not just to physically intensive roles and repetitive routines but also to a wide range of other tasks. MGI estimates that roughly up to 45 percent of the activities employees perform can be automated by adapting currently demonstrated technologies.

These outrageous, though plausible, thoughts make the idea of artificial intelligence less attractive when giving a helping hand to everything in your everyday life. Someone that truly understood the beginnings of A.I. was the brilliant yet tragic Alan Turing. He was an English scientist who broke the Nazi Enigma Machine's code and helped bring WWII to an end. Turning made many predictions about artificial intelligence, his lesser known yet most significant warns about AI's future threat. In 1951 he wrote, "At some stageโ€ฆ we should have to expect the machines to take control.

I've heard a lot of people saying that Machine Learning is nothing else than a synonymous of Artificial Intelligence but that's not true at all. The reality is that Machine Learning is just one approach to AI (in fact it's called the statistic approach). Let me first give a definition of Machine Learning. It's a type of artificial intelligence that gives computers the ability to learn to do stuff via different algorithms. On the other hand Artificial Intelligence is used to develop computer programs that perform tasks that are normally performed by human by giving machines (robots) the ability to seem like they have human intelligence.


OK Google, Siri, Echo: the many voices of AI

Forget your smartphones and other accessories: voice communication underpinned by artificial intelligence (AI) is going to be the basis for our connected day-to-day lives. And the shift has already begun! Some pointers: a recent survey, which polled a representative sample of 500 US residents, revealed that only 2% of iPhone users have never used the virtual assistant Siri. Meanwhile Google revealed during the Google IO developer festival held in Mountain View in May just how much emphasis the Internet giant is now placing on voice technology. In the very near future, voice might well be used to direct Google searches, a prospect which could explain the firm's massive investment in Google Assistant. Another pointer: we can count on seeing increasingly high-performance and lower-cost artificial intelligence tools.

Startup Gong.io came out of stealth mode recently, announcing a 6 million in Series A funding. Gong's cloud-based artificial intelligence software helps improve the performance and productivity of B2B sales teams by analyzing their conversations with prospects and providing guidance about the best way to close a deal. Says Amit Bendov, Gong co-founder and CEO: "There are probably a thousand books on successful selling on Amazon--and they are all based on anecdotes." Instead, Gong brings science to the art of the deal, augmenting experience and intuition with facts and figures drawn from analysis of big unstructured data--all the conversations conducted by all members of the sales team. Over the last 20-plus years (most recently as CEO of fast-growing business intelligence startup Sisense), Bendov has developed a number of successful sales teams, all selling remotely.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will soon transform the way we work With recent developments like the launch of Facebook's chatbot store, Apple's acquisition of Emotient, and the release of Viv, a virtual assistant from the founders of Siri, there's no doubt that artificial intelligence (AI) has started to quickly proliferate across consumer applications. Nonetheless, many of these new applications are still more novelty than necessity as their functionality is rudimentary at best, though we've come to rely on them daily โ€“ from Amazon product recommendations to Facebook facial recognition (auto tagging). Until consumer-facing AI can usher in new technological advancements that provide deeper and more human-like interaction, it still has a long way to go before it reaches its tipping point.

The headline isn't mine โ€“ it was from Bloomberg (I think'robots' sell). The article is really talking about online dispute resolution tools powered by artificial intelligence. Most people are familiar with this kind of tool primarily because of eBay. Its site has an automated dispute-resolution tool which settles 60 million claims every year. Now, some countries are deploying similar technology to let people negotiate divorces, landlord-tenant disputes, and other legal conflicts.


You may soon be able to control your computer with your eyes

Controlling a computer screen with nothing but your eyes may be coming closer and closer to reality, and it's all thanks to Eyefluence, a Silicon Valley-based startup whose mission revolves around hands-free navigation. While much of the team's progress has been kept closely under wraps, TechCrunch reports that Eyefluence has been testing out a number of different prototypes, using augmented reality glasses outfitted with cameras that keep track of what you're looking at. This technology, the team notes, could be used in a wide variety of applications -- whether you're looking to buy a dress online or send a photo of that dress to your friends, you can do it without lifting a finger. This hands-free system "moves as fast as you can think," said Jim Marggraff, founder and CEO at Eyefluence. And while there's other similar technology on the market, Marggraff insists that Eyefluence differs in its ability to function "without winking and without waiting."
