National Grid examining artificial intelligence to make power grid 10 per cent more efficient
National Grid is to examine how artificial intelligence can be used to make the UK's power distribution infrastructure more efficient. The company admitted over the weekend that it is in talks with Google's DeepMind artificial intelligence unit, which it acquired for $400m in January 2014, as well as a number of other AI specialists. "We are in the very early stages of looking at the potential of working with DeepMind and exploring what opportunities they could offer for us," a spokesperson for National Grid told City AM. "There's huge potential for predictive machine learning technology to help energy systems reduce their environmental impact," they added. The news was broken on Saturday when DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis claimed in an interview with the Financial Times. Brexit is less stressful than losing your smartphone, study finds
British adults feel more stressed about the prospect of losing their smartphone than they do about Brexit, according to a new study conducted by the Physiological Society. The Stress in modern Britain survey asked people to rate how stressful they find โ or imagine they would find โ 18 different life events, with the Physiological Society using the results to assign an average score to each one from a scale of zero to ten, with zero meaning'Not at all stressful' and ten'Very stressful'. Smartphone loss came 14th on the list, with a score of 5.79, making it more stressful than Brexit (4.23), but slightly less stressful than terrorist threats (5.84). Scientists want to define just how smart robot surgeons are
The system ranges from level zero to level five. The lowest one describes tele-operated robots that have no autonomous abilities. It then rises to level one, where a robot can provide some "mechanical guidance" while a human has "continuous control." Level two describes a robot that can handle small tasks on its own, chosen and initiated by an operator. Level three allows the robot to create "strategies," which a human has to approve first. Level four means the robot can execute decisions on its own, but with the supervision of a qualified doctor, while level five grants full autonomy.
With $30 Million Infusion, Mobile Health Startup Bets On AI To Flag Heart Conditions
AliveCor's Kardia Mobile records ECGs in 60 seconds and beams the data to a smartphone app. AliveCor, the Silicon Valley-based maker of the $99 Kardia Mobile, a portable electrocardiogram device, is now betting that artificial intelligence will help doctors monitor patients' heart conditions. Its machine learning algorithms will automatically flag abnormal ECGs, leading to early detection of common heart arrhythmias and helping to prevent strokes. The company, which is led by former Microsoft and Google exec Vic Gundotra, on Thursday unveiled Kardia Pro, a platform that connects doctors and patients. It uses AI to detect atrial fibrillation, the most common cardiac arrhythmia, which it then flags for physicians.
Chipmaker Nvidia Says Working With Paccar on Driverless Trucks

Paccar, which manufactures the Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF lines of trucks, has developed a proof-of-concept self-driving truck using Nvidia's technology, the chipmaker said in a blog post. Nvidia, known for making graphics chips for the high-end gaming computers, has been focusing on self-driving systems and makes the DRIVE PX 2 self-driving system used by Tesla Inc. The rapidly growing market for self-driving technology has attracted companies ranging from Alphabet Inc's Waymo to chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. Intel Corp, the world's largest computer chipmaker, also jumped into the fray when it agreed on Monday to buy Israeli autonomous vehicle technology firm Mobileye for $15.3 billion.
