Baidu's Deep Speech 2 is a cloud-based voice recognition software based on a deep learning neural network. "But we were noticing that in the past two to three years, speech recognition was actually improving a lot, benefiting from big data and deep learning to train its neural networks to produce faster, more accurate results. For English, the speech recognition software was three times faster with a 20.4 percent low error rate. Why Amazon and the CIA want algorithms to understand satellite photos
Why can't computers watch the Earth from above and automatically map our roads, buildings, and trash heaps? Satellite operator DigitalGlobe is teaming up with Amazon, the venture arm of the CIA, and chipmaker Nvidia to try to make it happen. In a joint project, DigitalGlobe today released satellite imagery depicting the whole of Rio de Janeiro to a resolution of 50 centimeters. The outlines of 200,000 buildings inside the city's roughly 1,900 square kilometers have been manually marked on the photos. The SpaceNet data set, as it is called, is intended to spark efforts to train machine-learning algorithms to interpret high-resolution satellite photos by themselves.

Informatica CEO: 'Data security is an unsolved problem'
Companies today are awash in data, but current tools and processes are not enabling them to keep it secure. That's according to Informatica CEO Anil Chakravarthy, whose says his company -- which has traditionally focused on data management and integration -- is embarking on a major push to go further into data security. "You hear about breaches all the time -- just imagine all the ones you're not hearing about," Chakravarthy said in a recent interview. "Data security today is an unsolved problem for customers." But a machine sees none of this; to a machine, it's just a bunch of pixels. It's up to computer-vision technology like the one developed at FAIR to segment each object out. Considering that real-world objects come in so many shapes and sizes as well as the fact that photos are subject to varying backgrounds and lighting conditions, it's easy to see why visual recognition is so complex. The answer, Dollar writes, lies in deep convolutional neural networks that are "trained rather than designed." The networks essentially learn from millions of annotated examples over time to identify the objects. "The first stage would be to look at different parts of the image that could be interesting," he says. "The second step is to then say, 'OK, that's a sheep,' or'that's a dog.' "Our whole goal is to get at all the pixels, to get at all the information in the image," he says.
Christian drama 'Natural Selection' is no subtle offering
There's little that comes off as "natural" in "Natural Selection," a stiffly heavy-handed, drawn-out, faith-based drama about a Christ-like teen struggling to find his true path. Facebook open sources more machine vision, AI code
Facebook's artificial intelligence research team is open sourcing more code, frameworks and research on machine vision and facial recognition. In a blog post, Facebook AI Research, or FAIR, said its latest code on machine vision is being opened up. For Facebook, this technology is critical since its users are sharing and using more visual content. Ultimately, Facebook is hoping to enable image searching without tags or captions. Machine vision hasn't been able to catch up with humans yet, but the gap between the two is closing.
