Ford adopts Astute Knowledge deep learning technology
Car manufacturer Ford has selected Astute Solutions to implement the Astute Knowledge service across 21 European countries, supporting 18 different languages. Included in the service are Astute's artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) and natural language processing capabilities. Ford customers will be able to engage in 2-way conversation with a "virtual agent" on Ford's website, social media, or mobile app. This virtual agent will analyze what the customer is saying and apply deep learning to provide the best answer from multiple data sources, even sources originally written in a different language.

There's no human instinct more basic than speech, and yet, for many people, talking can be taxing. One in 14 working-age Americans suffer from voice disorders that are often associated with abnormal vocal behaviors -- some of which can cause damage to vocal cord tissue and lead to the formation of nodules or polyps that interfere with normal speech production. Unfortunately, many behaviorally-based voice disorders are not well understood. In particular, patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) often experience deteriorating voice quality and vocal fatigue ("tired voice") in the absence of any clear vocal cord damage or other medical problems, which makes the condition both hard to diagnose and hard to treat. But a team from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) believes that better understanding of conditions like MTD is possible through machine learning.
New AI Tool Helps High Schoolers with College Admissions -- THE Journal
SchoolWise, a web-based student information system, has launched GoSchoolWise.com, The new site utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools such as IBM Watson, a platform that uses natural language processing and personality traits to reveal insights from large amounts of unstructured data, to help students find the right college for them. SchoolWise aims to improve that number by assisting students at the beginning of the college admissions process. By providing a college/student personality matching tool, as well as a financial aid calculator, SchoolWise seeks to give as much information up front as possible and help prevent students from encountering unpleasant surprises, such as financial shocks or environmental discomforts. The personality matching tool on SchoolWise uses IBM Watson to analyze applicant writings and essays to determine personality characteristics and individual college fits.
Deep Learning Resources
This is a list of resources I think would be useful for those who are just starting to explore the amazing Machine Learning domain of Computer Science and want to learn more about Neural Networks and their applications. The general idea behind putting these resources together and publishing this list is that when I just started I saw posts with hundreds of links without description and I simply didn't know which of them are worth spending time on. Focusing on most useful ones and giving short summaries instead is a good idea. I am not a Deep Learning expert and everything I wrote down is just my personal experience with these resources, very subjective opinion. In-depth Convolutional Neural Networks course highly recommended if one wants to learn about image recognition, Computer Vision-related problems and so on. The problemset is amazing; it has probably the best numpy tutorial I have ever seen and makes people implement algorithms they saw in lectures in pure Python numpy, which seems to be a great idea as it helps to get better understanding of how everything actually works.
SAP Targets Terrorism With AI
A specialized division of the business software powerhouse SAP (System Application Products) is building tools to harness machine learning and artificial intelligence for antiterrorist intelligence missions and cybersecurity--though details of how exactly the software has been used are shrouded in secrecy. SAP National Security Services, which describes itself as an independent subsidiary of the German-based software giant that's operated by U.S. citizens on American soil, works with homeland government agencies to find ways to track potential terrorists across social media. "One [use] is the identification of bad actors: People that may be threats to us--people and organizations," says Mark Testoni, president and CEO of SAP NS2, as the company is known. "Secondarily, once we've identified those kinds of players and actors, we can then track their behaviors and organizations." SAP NS2 is also working with cybersecurity firm ThreatConnect to use some of the same underlying technology to track intruders and menaces in computer networks in real time, the companies announced this week.

Zuckerberg gave an update on the status of his AI system during a public Q&A in Italy on Monday. He said that the AI is "still a work in progress" but already uses facial recognition to scan his face and let him into his gated compound in San Francisco. "It just sees my face and it lets me in," he said. "So that is pretty fun." "I got it to this point where now I can control the lights," he told the crowd.
