Stanford-hosted study examines how AI might affect urban life in 2030 Stanford News

A panel of academic and industrial thinkers has looked ahead to 2030 to forecast how advances in artificial intelligence (AI) might affect life in a typical North American city โ€“ in areas as diverse as transportation, health care and education โ€“ and to spur discussion about how to ensure the safe, fair and beneficial development of these rapidly emerging technologies. Titled "Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030," this year-long investigation is the first product of the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100), an ongoing project hosted by Stanford to inform societal deliberation and provide guidance on the ethical development of smart software, sensors and machines. "We believe specialized AI applications will become both increasingly common and more useful by 2030, improving our economy and quality of life," said Peter Stone, a computer scientist at the University of Texas at Austin and chair of the 17-member panel of international experts. "But this technology will also create profound challenges, affecting jobs and incomes and other issues that we should begin addressing now to ensure that the benefits of AI are broadly shared." The new report traces its roots to a 2009 study that brought AI scientists together in a process of introspection that became ongoing in 2014, when Eric and Mary Horvitz created the AI100 endowment through Stanford.

For the 1964 World Fair, science fiction author Isaac Asimov wrote an article for the New York Times, envisioning what the exhibits at the event would look like in fifty years' time. Asimov's predictions were scrutinized and used in numerous think pieces and tech forecasts of 2014, the year that marked the passing of the five decades since the article's publish date. Since a large body of Asimov's work concerned itself with human relationship with artificial intelligence, much attention was focused on the following quote: "If machines are that smart today, what may not be in the works 50 years hence? It will be such computers, much miniaturized, that will serve as the "brains" of robots." Most writers summarized that, while the closest we have to an android housekeeper is a Roomba, Asimov was right to draw the parallel between brains and computers.

For years, science-fiction moviemakers have been making us fear the bad things that artificially intelligent machines might do to their human creators. But for the next decade or two, our biggest concern is more likely to be that robots will take away our jobs or bump into us on the highway. Now five of the world's largest tech companies are trying to create a standard of ethics around the creation of artificial intelligence. While science fiction has focused on the existential threat of AI to humans, researchers at Google's parent company, Alphabet, and those from Amazon, Facebook, IBM, and Microsoft have been meeting to discuss more tangible issues, such as the impact of AI on jobs, transportation, and even warfare. Tech companies have long overpromised what artificially intelligent machines can do.


These Apps' Creations Sure Look Like Masterworks, But Is It Art?

These days you just need some artificial intelligence, which can be delivered through your smartphone. Two of this summer's much buzzed-about apps are Prisma, which turns your photos into what look like paintings, and Artisto, which does the same for videos. Both are available for iOS and Android. Whether the results are true works of art can be debated, but millions of the apps' users are having fun trying to imitate the masters. Prisma uses neural networks and deep learning algorithms to process photos and make them look like art, applying styles such as that of The Scream by Edvard Munch or the pop art of a Roy Lichtenstein.


Asset managers face margin pressure as AuM declines

Dubai: In keeping with the global decline the growth of assets under management (AuM), the Middle East also witnessed a sharp fall in the total AuM last year, according to a study by Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Globally, AuM stalled with marginal growth last year. The BCG report shows the global value of AuM rose just 1 per cent in 2015, to 71.4 trillion (Dh262 trillion) from 70.5 trillion in 2014, after growing 8 per cent that year, and at an average annualised rate of 5 per cent from 2008 through 2014. In contrast, the Middle East's AuM declined 10 per cent and net new flows of assets, revenue growth, and revenue margins all dipped lower in 2015. In absolute terms the region's AuM plummeted from 1.4 trillion in 2014 to 1.3 trillion in 2015.


New Turing phone specs so unbelievable it looks like a fake

Turing Robotic Industries' new device is so advanced it contains processors that don't exist yet, a 60 Megapixel camera, 6K, and more than 1 TB in storage. No wonder people think it's a practical joke Well, after two readings of Turning Robotic Industries' announcement, we could not find any disclaimers in small print or an emoji. Ostensibly, it looks like this is an official announcement by the company, which is unveiling its ultra-ultra-advanced smartphone. The company says it will have artificial intelligence and (AI) security capabilities โ€“ and absolutely unbelievable technical specifications. The new device, to be called the Turing Phone Cadenza, will be the heir of the company's current smartphone, and according to the company, will include impressive specifications.

He has served MIT as Head of the MIT Marketing Group, Head of the Management Science Area, Research Director of the Center for Innovation in Product Development, and co-Director of the International Center for Research on the Management of Technology.He is the co-author of two textbooks, Design and Marketing of New Products and Essentials of New Product Management, and a former editor of Marketing Science (now on the advisory board).I think it wouldn't be smart to start this interview with something as dull and complex as a definition. AI-powered business intelligence is the future ET CIO

New Delhi: While artificial intelligence is making waves globally, Cognitive Business Intelligence (BI) is the next stage of machine learning to design and analyse unstructured data, video, images and human language, say experts. According to them, we are generating data but is this data being analysed to create insights which could help in running businesses more effectively is the real concern for businesses. "This potential can be leveraged using Business Intelligence. Using BI, we can understand what really the data means," said Nikhilesh Tiwari, Co-Founder, Helical Insight, the world's first open source Business Intelligence (BI) framework. At the moment, less than 0.5 per cent of all data is ever analysed and used globally.


developerWorks talks "Applied Artificial Intelligence" with entrepreneurs

As an IBM developerWorks information architect, I gave a presentation last week about cognitive computing to entrepreneurs and staffers at tekMountain, a co-working and tech incubator in Wilmington, North Carolina where I work as a tech mentor. The title is a bit tongue and cheek, but I really tried to position the Watson application development demo I gave as the "applied" part of a series that we launched in the area last year on artificial intelligence. At a previous "Exploring Artificial Intelligence" TechTalk, my buddies Mike Orr (IBM Watson University program chair) and Julian Keith (UNC Wilmington Psychology Chair and brain guy), began a series of conversations about artificial intelligence that quickly blossomed into several different AI events with different AI focuses at different venues. An upcoming talk in this very popular series (for example) is titled "Is artificial intelligence going to do my job better than me?" As a software development enthusiast who sometimes teaches kids and others how to start coding, I naturally conceived of a hands-on version of Watson services as a way to take the conversation further.
