It has awareness of its battery, and it nags me to charge it when it is low. Meat is not magical so I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to have awareness "in sillico". What would be needed for awareness is to have an evolving system trying to maintain its balance in relation to the external conditions and perturbations. Then, any information it learns to use in order to balance out, is part of its awareness. Awareness is just a feedback mechanism for optimal behavior in a complex environment.
Why Shopify's Michael Perry is afraid bots will fail small businesses
Earlier this week, Mindtree and Conversable announced plans to work together to automate customer service for businesses. A small business should never automate chatting with customers, said Kit founder Michael Perry, not until natural language processing has made a lot of strides. Perry is founder of Kit, a bot that helps business owners create Facebook ads and promotional material by SMS or chat. One day after news of a Messenger API was shared by CEO Mark Zuckerberg at F8 and Shopify became the first commerce platform to announce an integration with Facebook Messenger, Shopify announced that it had acquired Kit for an undisclosed amount of money. Following the acquisition, Kit is working with 5,000 small businesses and merchants in 76 countries.

Google has reached a milestone in its DeepMind artificial intelligence (A.I.) project with the successful development of technology that can mimic the sound of human voice. Dubbed as WaveNet, the breakthrough was described as a deep neural network that can generate raw audio wave forms to generate speech. It can reportedly beat existing Text-to-Speech systems. According to researchers in the Britain-based WaveNet unit, the gap in human performance, which could be demonstrated in an actual A.I. -- human conversation -- is reduced by as much as 50 percent. What is also interesting about the WaveNet technology is that it is capable of learning different voices and speech patterns to the point that it can even simulate mouth movements and artificial breaths in addition to emotions, language inflections and accents.

It is uncontroversial that the human brain has capabilities that are, in some respects, far superior to those of all other known objects in the cosmos. It is the only kind of object capable of understanding that the cosmos is even there, or why there are infinitely many prime numbers, or that apples fall because of the curvature of space-time, or that obeying its own inborn instincts can be morally wrong, or that it itself exists. Nor are its unique abilities confined to such cerebral matters. The cold, physical fact is that it is the only kind of object that can propel itself into space and back without harm, or predict and prevent a meteor strike on itself, or cool objects to a billionth of a degree above absolute zero, or detect others of its kind across galactic distances. But no brain on Earth is yet close to knowing what brains do in order to achieve any of that functionality. The enterprise of achieving it artificially -- the field of'artificial general intelligence' or AGI -- has made no progress whatever during the entire six decades of its existence. Why? Because, as an unknown sage once remarked, 'it ain't what we don't know that causes trouble, it's what we know for sure that just ain't so' (and if you know that sage was Mark Twain, then what you know ain't so either). I cannot think of any other significant field of knowledge in which the prevailing wisdom, not only in society at large but also among experts, is so beset with entrenched, overlapping, fundamental errors. Yet it has also been one of the most self-confident fields in prophesying that it will soon achieve the ultimate breakthrough. Despite this long record of failure, AGI must be possible. And that is because of a deep property of the laws of physics, namely the universality of computation.
Elon Musk says details on Tesla's Autopilot improvements coming Sunday
Apologizing for delays and an "unusually difficult couple of weeks," Elon Musk tweeted Saturday that he finally will provide more details about promised updates to Tesla's Autopilot program. The Tesla CEO said he will do an hourlong Q&A with reporters, then publish information about Autopilot on Sunday to the company's blog. Musk had said on Aug. 31 that "major improvements" to Autopilot were coming and would be announced that day. But the next morning, a SpaceX rocket exploded in a fireball on the launch pad, putting the announcement on hold. Musk is the chief executive of both Tesla and SpaceX.

A cybersecurity startup is applying the same "deep learning" techniques that are used in modern image and voice recognition to detect malware. Deep Instinct launched late last year with a system that it says can go beyond typical antivirus programs by not only detecting known malware but also flagging dangerous software it's never encountered before. The company doesn't need to have security experts create digital rules specifying what kind of characteristics should trigger alerts, says Maya Schirmann, Deep Instinct's chief marketing officer. Instead, the system essentially trains itself by studying enormous numbers of applications, documents, images, and other common types of files, labeled simply for whether they contain malware or not. "The training phase happens on our own premises, at Deep Instinct," Schirmann says.
