Teaching machines to predict the future

When we see two people meet, we can often predict what happens next: A handshake, a hug, or maybe even a kiss. Our ability to anticipate actions is thanks to intuitions born out of a lifetime of experiences. Machines, on the other hand, have trouble making use of complex knowledge like that. Computer systems that predict actions would open up new possibilities ranging from robots that can better navigate human environments, to emergency response systems that predict falls, to Google Glass-style headsets that feed you suggestions for what to do in different situations. The WaveNet system can be thought of as an improvement upon concatenative text to speech, in that it still employs recordings of real human voices. But instead of chopping these up and reorganizing them in the old way, it uses an artificial neural network to generate synthetic utterances based upon the voices it was trained with. The downside is that this system is computationally intensive. Modeling raw audio typically requires 16,000 samples per second, with each sample being influenced by all the previous ones. This is well beyond the processing power of a typical smartphone, but not unthinkable for GPUs like Nvidia's DGX-1 deep learning supercomputer.

Science fiction abounds with tales of benign computer systems that suddenly conclude people are simply inadequate and set about destroying humanity. As amusing as it is, though, how realistic is it that artificial intelligence (AI) could someday pose a hazard due to its development as it continues to evolve? Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund in the world, hired IBM's Watson programming team to incorporate artificial intelligence into the investment process. Later this year, I will be doing something similar so stay tuned to learn more about this exciting endeavor. Today, we have Jamie Wise from BUZZ Indexes, based in Toronto, who recently launched an Artificial Intelligence driven ETF based index fund BUZ (US). The investment process uses natural language processing software and artificial intelligence to scour the Internet for tweets, blogs, and searches for company names. One of the most interesting things is that the software is able distinguish between someone typing amazon when talking about a bad product they bought on line and AMZN and a bad outlook for the stock.


AI Can Recognize Your Face Even If You're Pixelated

Pixelation has long been a familiar fig leaf to cover our visual media's most private parts. Blurred chunks of text or obscured faces and license plates show up on the news, in redacted documents, and online. The technique is nothing fancy, but it has worked well enough, because people can't see or read through the distortion. The problem, however, is that humans aren't the only image recognition masters around anymore. As computer vision becomes increasingly robust, it's starting to see things we can't.


Ozobot's Evo is a smarter, more social coding robot

Ozobot's Bit impressed us a few years ago with its simply take on programming education: kids just need to draw lines on a piece of paper or mobile device to program the tiny robot. As they get more comfortable, they can start to program on mobile devices and computers. Now Ozobot is taking a major step forward with the 100 Evo, a new robot that has sensors to interact with its environment, lights, a speaker and social capabilities. While Ozobot's previous devices were aimed directly at kids, it's hoping that Evo can break through to high schoolers and even college students, according to founder and CEO Nader Hamda. The new bot has a shot of appealing to older students simply because it can do a lot more than before.
