Wireless signals can detect your feelings with new device
What if your computer or smartphone could tell if you're happy or sad? A new device developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology aims to detect emotions by sending wireless signals that measure heartbeats as the signals bounce off a person's body. Researchers from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory say their device is 87 percent accurate in using heartrate and what it's already learned about a person to recognize joy, pleasure, sadness or anger, after the device first measures how each individual's body reacts in various emotional states. It works like an electrocardiogram monitor but without needing a sensor on the body to measure heartbeats. They say it could one day be used by advertising agencies to gauge audience reaction or in health care to diagnose depression or anxiety.
Innovation, safety sought in self-driving car guidelines
Saying they were doing something no other government has done, Obama administration officials rolled out a plan Tuesday they say will enable automakers to get self-driving cars onto the road without compromising safety. In drawing up 112 pages of guidelines, the government tried to be vague enough to allow innovation while at the same time making sure that car makers, tech companies and ride-hailing firms put safety first as the cars are developed. Only time will tell whether the mission was accomplished, but the document generally was praised by businesses and analysts as good guidance in a field that's evolving faster than anyone imagined just a few years ago. "How do you regulate a complex software system?" asked Timothy Carone, a Notre Dame University professor who has written about the future of automation. "They want to allow innovation, but they want to be very proscriptive in managing the risk side of this. In my mind, they're trying to manage the unknown."
Google finally launches its Allo messaging app
Google promised it would release both Allo and Duo, it's new chat and video calling apps, this summer. Duo landed more than a month ago, but Allo is just barely squeaking under the wire before it's technically Autumn. The Allo site is now live, and it gives you a rundown of the most important features of Google's new messaging app. The app itself is still rolling out worldwide, and may or may not yet be available for you by the time you read this. As with Duo, Allo is available for both Android and iOS.

Allo brings Google's 'Assistant' to your phone today
If you're going to unveil a new messaging app, it had better do something unique. At this point, finding a place amongst entrenched options like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and iMessage is not an easy task. Google didn't quite pull it off with Hangouts when it launched in 2013. Sure, it's installed on basically every Android phone out there and anyone with a Gmail account has probably tried it, but Google's messaging strategy never quite came together in a compelling or clear way. So Google is rebooting yet again with Allo, a mobile-only messaging app that leverages the company's biggest strengths in an effort to stand out from the pack.
Cognonto Empowers Knowledge-based Artificial Intelligence
CORALVILLE, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cognonto, a new start-up in knowledge-based artificial intelligence (KBAI), announced today the dual release of its Cognonto Platform and KBpedia, a computable knowledge structure to automate much of the effort needed for machine learning.
