Like to Fight? 1977 Soviet Cartoon Predicted Artificial Intelligence Weapons

#artificialintelligence

The work of Soviet Director Anatoliy Petrov, Polygon is set on a remote island. A military crew is finishing preparations for a weapon testing range, cutting down palm trees, leveling sand, ejecting natives from their homes. As they work, a soldier notes the next closest island is five kilometers away, and the island is far removed from major shipping lanes and airways. The weapon in question then looms into view -- a gigantic tank. A Professor dressed in white also appears, and as he places a proud hand on the tank's armor plating, the scene flashes back to a younger version of the character, beaming as his son runs to him from the family house.

Mysterious new version of Windows 10 created for Chinese government

The Independent - Tech

Microsoft has built a special customised version of Windows 10 for the Chinese government. The operating system is available to consumers in China, but the country's government hasn't been overly keen on Windows. It placed a ban on Windows 8 for government use in the aftermath of Edward Snowden's NSA spying revelations, and partnered with Canonical in 2013 in an ultimately doomed effort to create a Windows alternative called Kylin. UK laptop ban comes into effect by Saturday, government confirms

The Independent - Tech

The UK will ban people from flying into the country with large electronic devices by Saturday. The Department for Transport said that it will implement the ban on laptops and tablets from a range of countries this week. Any large gadgets flying from a range of affected countries will have to be put into the luggage hold, and can't be taken onto the plane. Airlines are being told to implement the rules "over the coming days and no later than 25 March", a DfT spokesperson said. Passengers "should go to the airport with the expectation that the measures are already in effect", she said.

Next frontier in smart voice assistants: your ear

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

The Bragi Dash "glows" green or blue, depending on whether it's charged and in use. A red hue means it's time to charge it back up. The tussle for supremacy between Amazon and Google to create the most useful voice assistant is getting louder. But while this battle is largely taking place in home speakers and phones, another player โ€“ IBM -- is carving out territory in the ear. At Barcelona's Mobile World Congress in February, Big Blue showed that it is getting down to business with voice, previewing applications that help a wide swath of professionals, from firefighters to family doctors, work smarter by using voice to tap into the Watson cognitive engine.

How Zocdoc's New Machine Learning Search Engine Makes Medicine More Human

#artificialintelligence

And, wait, are internists doctors who specialize in internal medicine - or just their interns? Some well-versed readers may indeed know the answer to all three of these questions (for the record: ophthalmologists are the ones who can perform eye surgery, psychiatrists can prescribe medications, and internists are your good old-fashioned general medicine practitioners). But the complexities of medical jargon can make an already complicated U.S. health system even more convoluted for millions of people seeking care. Click here to subscribe to Brainstorm Health Daily, our brand new newsletter about health innovations. That's why Zocdoc, the online doctor-locating and medical appointments platform, launched a new feature today on desktop and mobile devices that it dubs the "Patient-Powered Search." The firm describes this new engine as a "more intuitive search experience, built specifically to bridge the gap between healthcare industry and human speak."

AI Chatbot puts consumer insights in your pocket

#artificialintelligence

Amazon, Facebook and Apple already know it: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is here to stay and it will have a huge impact on our lives. And instead of fearing the inevitable, we had better talk about all the opportunities. We already see examples popping up were AI machines help with research tasks like survey design, qualitative moderation and data analysis. It will help us save time, which will allow us to focus on those parts of our jobs that are really of added value: understanding the business issues, crafting powerful consumer insights and bringing those to life in front of managers. But can AI do even more for us?

Big Data is a term that has been around for some time now but there is still confusion about what it actually is. The concept is continuing to evolve and to be reconsidered, as it remains the driving force behind many ongoing waves of digital transformation, including artificial intelligence, data science and the Internet of Things (IoT). With that in mind I thought it was time to write a beginner's guide to what Big Data means in 2017. In a similar way to my beginner's guides to Blockchain and FinTech, this will be jargon-free and aims to explain the core concepts and ideas to anyone regardless of background knowledge. It all starts with the exponential explosion in the amount of data we have generated since the dawn of the digital age.

The Five Senses of Computing

#artificialintelligence

The trend in computing towards more natural user interfaces is unmistakable. Graphical user interfaces have long been dominant, but machines driven by more intuitive inputs, like touch and voice, are now mainstream. Today, audio, motion, and even our thoughts, are the basis for the most innovative computer-user interaction models powered by advanced sensor technology. Each computing paradigm maps to one or more of the five human senses; exploring each sense gives us an indication of the direction in which technology is heading. The introduction of the graphical user interface (GUI) drove a step function change in computers as productivity tools, because users could rely heavily on sight, our dominant sense.
