Samsung Galaxy S8 Review: 2017 Flagship Just Pretty Enough To Make You Think Twice

International Business Times

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus have been on the market for just over one month and continue to be a hot topic among smartphone enthusiasts. Whether it's Samsung celebrating favorable sales of the handsets or hackers attempting to spoof the device's iris scanner, there is still a lot to say about the Galaxy S8. The smartphone introduces to Samsung's line a new design and new software features, such as the AI assistant Bixby. It also touts several feature improvements, including a sharper and faster camera and more efficient processors. Whether the Galaxy S8 is worth the buy is completely up to the consumer; however, there are many things to take into consideration when selecting a new premium smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a beautiful smartphone. It stands out during a time when mobile devices have become just ubiquitous enough for many consumers to not care about design, and would rather just have a functional device.

Dating App Tips: When Should You Send That Second Text? Hinge Wants To Help

International Business Times

Dating can be nerve-racking, especially when you don't know if you should send that second text. After a person asked if texting someone twice to get his or her attention comes off as too desperate, the iOS dating app Hinge gave some advice on when you should send someone a second message. Molly Fedick, Editor-in-Chief Hinge's blog of IRL, said double messaging on a dating app might not come off as too needy. "I am one of those people who believes (believed?) "Here's the thing though -- dating apps aren't'real life,' if you consider'real life' good old fashioned texting.

WSJ: Bixby Voice won't debut on Galaxy S8 until late June

Engadget

To hear Samsung's Galaxy S8 ad campaign tell it, the company's Bixby digital assistant was already fully featured and ready to go at the handset's launch. The reality is quite a bit different, however. Bixby Voice, the would-be competitor to Siri and Google Assistant apparently won't be available until late next month, somewhat narrowing the "later this spring" timeframe from April. Wall Street Journal reports that the cause for tardiness has to do with how the assistant comprehends English syntax and grammar. To be fair, that's a sore spot for pretty much every artificial intelligence system at the moment.

ARM's new processors are designed to power the machine-learning machines

#artificialintelligence

On the eve of Computex, Taiwan's big showpiece event where PC makers roll out the latest and best implementations of Intel CPUs, mobile rival ARM is announcing its own big news with the unveiling of a new generation of ARM CPUs and GPUs. Official today, the ARM Cortex-A75 is the new flagship-tier mobile processor design, with a claimed 22 percent improvement in performance over the incumbent A73. It's joined by the new Cortex-A55, which has the highest power efficiency of any mid-range CPU ARM's ever designed, and the Mali-G72 graphics processor, which also comes with a 25 percent improvement in efficiency relative to its predecessor G71. The efficiency improvements are evolutionary and predictable, but the revolutionary aspects of this new lineup relate to artificial intelligence: this is the first set of processing components designed specifically to tackle the challenges of onboard AI and machine learning. Plus, last year's updates to improve performance in the power-hugry tasks of augmented and virtual reality are being extended and elaborated.

SoftBank's Son chases boyhood dreams with $100 billion fund

The Japan Times

When Masayoshi Son was a boy growing up in Kyushu, he kept a notebook to scribble down inventions he hoped to create one day. Today, the SoftBank founder has almost $100 billion to invest in making the next big thing a reality. Son's SoftBank Group Corp. closed the first round of a planned $100 billion investment fund, with money raised from Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, as well as Apple Inc. and Qualcomm Inc. The Vision Fund gives the 59-year-old access to a pool of capital unparalleled in the worlds of private equity or venture capital -- the equivalent of four Silver Lakes or 15 Sequoia Capitals. He has said, without irony, that he has a 300-year plan for SoftBank and aims to build the world's most valuable company.
