Robocop-style security guards used in a LA shopping mall

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A shopping centre in Los Angeles has introduced its first robot security guard to patrol the mall to help identify potential shop lifters. The robocop-style guard is capable of picking up video footage and sending information back to security headquarters, so they can respond quickly. It is equipped with a 360-degree camera, WiFi, sensing units and can stream live video, read license plates and detect people. The bot operates autonomously and looks like a cross between a dalek from Doctor Who and the main character in Wall-E. The objective of the machine is to differentiate between a harmless passerby and a possible criminal.

We reviewed the Ring Video Doorbell 2 in August 2017. We found the install process a little frustrating, but overall it's a solid improvement of the original.

Scalable multi-node training with TensorFlow Amazon Web Services

#artificialintelligence

We've heard from customers that scaling TensorFlow training jobs to multiple nodes and GPUs successfully is hard. TensorFlow has distributed training built-in, but it can be difficult to use. Recently, we made optimizations to TensorFlow and Horovod to help AWS customers scale TensorFlow training jobs to multiple nodes and GPUs. With these improvements, any AWS customer can use an AWS Deep Learning AMI to train ResNet-50 on ImageNet in just under 15 minutes. To achieve this, 32 Amazon EC2 instances, each with 8 GPUs, a total 256 GPUs, were harnessed with TensorFlow. All of the required software and tools for this solution ship with the latest Deep Learning AMIs (DLAMIs), so you can try it out yourself. You can train faster, implement your models faster, and get results faster than ever before. This blog post describes our results and shows you how to try out this easier and faster way to run distributed training with TensorFlow. Figure A. ResNet-50 ImageNet model training with the latest optimized TensorFlow with Horovod on a Deep Learning AMI takes 15 minutes on 256 GPUs.

Seven-Eleven tries out a store in Tokyo with unmanned payment system

The Japan Times

Major convenience store operator Seven-Eleven Japan Co. has launched an experimental outlet in Tokyo with an unmanned payment system and facial recognition technology. The facial recognition system was developed by technology giant NEC Corp. Seven-Eleven Japan plans to open such outlets in locations where customers can be identified, such as office buildings and factories, after resolving various technological challenges. The trial shop, located in a building that hosts NEC group companies, can be used only by their employees. The NEC-developed system checks customers' faces against pre-registered facial images of employees using cameras when they enter the outlet and make payments. After shoppers scan barcodes on products in the self-checkout area, the purchase amounts are automatically deducted from their salaries.

Walmart (WMT) is in the early stages of testing a kitchen robot assistant named "Flippy" at its Bentonville, Arkansas, headquarters to see whether or not it's the right fit for its in-store delis. Flippy is the world's first autonomous robotic kitchen assistant powered by artificial intelligence from Miso Robotics, a two-year-old startup. The robot made headlines a year ago debuting as the burger-flipping robot at a CaliBurger franchise in Pasadena. More recently, Flippy got a gig at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles with vending food service company Levy Restaurants, part of Compass Group, to fry up chicken tenders and tater tots. "Walmart saw what we were doing and said, 'Could you bring Flippy from Dodgers Stadium to our Culinary Institute?'"
