How machine learning can drive retail success - Dataconomy

#artificialintelligence

After retailers suffered a bad year with bankruptcies, store closures and lower store footfall, we discuss why now is the time for retailers to invest in data and advanced technologies to boost consumer relations. Bricks and mortar retailers would sooner forget 2018. The year that brought 16 U.S. bankruptcies, falling share prices for leading European brands, and the UK's worst festive sales in 10 years isn't an industry high point. But it does offer a crucial lesson for those struggling in a tough climate: the need to harness digital. While footfall in stores continues to decline, online retail continues to thrive globally, with annual sales exceeding $2.4 trillion.

What Retail Workers Say About Technology Potentially Eliminating Their Jobs

#artificialintelligence

Two out of three retail workers believe that technology will eventually replace some of their job responsibilities, underscoring the rising concern about the impact of automation and cutting-edge technology on the workplace. That's according to a new survey Thursday by The Fair Workweek Initiative, a project spawned from the non-profit labor-monitoring groups The Center for Popular Democracy and Organization United for Respect. The report is intended to reveal how U.S. retail employees perceive the growing use of technology in their daily work-lives. In short, they see it as both a concern and potential opportunity. Organizations like the World Economic Forum have forecast that innovations like machine learning will significantly alter the labor market, potentially leading to major job losses while creating new kinds of work. The retail sector is particularly prone to major disruption, led by online giant Amazon as it increases spending on new technology in an effort to cut costs.

Humanity AI: Better Together

We are increasingly addicted to Amazon Prime and its global equivalents, with its same-day or two-day free delivery service. To feed our addiction, Amazon has been building distribution centers closer and closer to our homes and deploying hundreds of thousands of Kiva robots to carry 25-pound yellow bins from one location to another.Alongside those robots, Amazon has been hiring hundreds of thousands of human workers to position the Kiva robots and troubleshoot issues when the robots get stuck. Nissa Scott, shown in the picture above, says about her job in a New York Times article, "For me, it's the most mentally challenging thing we have here. When machines take over simple repetitive tasks, humans are freed to do what they do best; thinking outside of the box and solving complex problems in creative ways. Here's another example.
