Council Post: 15 Ways Retailers Leverage AI That Every Consumer Should Know About
If you've ever researched a topic online only to be presented with an ad for a related product seconds later, you've experienced the power of artificial intelligence in the retail industry. Most consumers know AI is playing an ever-larger role in enticing us to make purchases--it's a level of personalization that can be welcome at times (and a little alarming at others). But retailers are using AI for far more than sending out email promotions or displaying timely online ads. AI is helping the retail industry track consumers' behavior both online and in stores; guiding retailers in making smarter decisions when it comes to pricing, inventory levels and store layouts; and much more. Below, 15 members of Forbes Technology Council explain some of the ways retail businesses leverage AI that many consumers don't know about (but should).

Amazon's drone delivery division was reportedly hit hard by layoffs
Earlier this month, Amazon confirmed plans to lay off around 18,000 workers. The move has hit certain divisions hard, including Comixology and Prime Air. The latter's drone delivery program was just starting to gain traction after commencing deliveries in test markets and unveiling a new model, but the layoffs have reportedly had a significant impact on that team. Prime Air employees learned about the cuts on Wednesday, according to CNBC. Employees in the drone delivery department's design, maintenance, systems engineering, flight testing and flight operations teams are said to have been laid off.
Amazon's Fire tablets are up to 43 percent off, plus the rest of the week's best tech deals
This week, Apple announced and set the release date for the new MacBook Pros and both Amazon and Best Buy rushed to offer a slight discount on pre orders. Amazon also knocked a hefty 40 percent off many of their Fire Tablets, including the new Fire HD 8. Bose's QC II earbuds are back down to $250, and a couple robot vacuums are on sale, including the best budget vac we've tried, iRobot's Roomba 694. We also found a few deals on SSD cards from both Samsung and Crucial, plus a tidy 32 percent discount on one of our favorite tiny Bluetooth speakers. Here are the best tech deals from this week that you can still get today. As part of a larger Fire tablet sale at Amazon, the brand's latest 8-inch slab is 40 percent off.
Set up Amazon SageMaker Studio with Jupyter Lab 3 using the AWS CDK
Amazon SageMaker Studio is a fully integrated development environment (IDE) for machine learning (ML) partly based on JupyterLab 3. Studio provides a web-based interface to interactively perform ML development tasks required to prepare data and build, train, and deploy ML models. In Studio, you can load data, adjust ML models, move in between steps to adjust experiments, compare results, and deploy ML models for inference. The AWS Cloud Development Kit (AWS CDK) is an open-source software development framework to create AWS CloudFormation stacks through automatic CloudFormation template generation. A stack is a collection of AWS resources, that can be programmatically updated, moved, or deleted. AWS CDK constructs are the building blocks of AWS CDK applications, representing the blueprint to define cloud architectures.
Top 16 Artificial Intelligence Applications: 14 Uses of AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) is hailed as the disruptive technology that is set to revolutionize the 21st century. The function and popularity of this technology are soaring by the day. It has the potential to solve many of humanity's most pressing problems. AI is an umbrella term for technologies that can display some kind of intelligence such as machine learning computer vision, natural language processing, etc… These intelligent agents are algorithms trained using vast amounts of data to give machines some kind of reasoning ability. Instead of purely logical processing that computers usually perform, intelligent agents are designed around human thinking patterns and problem-solving skills. Artificial intelligence technologies create intelligent systems capable of self-learning and adapting to any new challenge. These specification has led to the rapid adoption of AI across different fields and industries around the world. Artificial intelligence has been around for decades, but its applications are only now opening up as more and more resources are dedicated to it. Over the last few years, AI has significantly evolved and is being extensively used in different aspects of human life and industry. Companies have begun using intelligent machines to mine data to optimize just about everything within their business operations. Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science that aims to create intelligent machines that work and react like humans. It is the broad term for any device that is capable of performing a task normally restricted to human intelligence. AI combines several disciplines such as computer science, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience. The concept underlying AI is to get a non-human entity to make decisions just as an intelligent human would. Artificial intelligence research is about the creation of computer systems capable of visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. So many fields are using AI nowadays, from research and home automation to data processing and analysis. The technology is used to solve problems in many different ways and it is found in many types of systems such as household appliances, automobiles, financial systems, medical applications, and many other common tools. AI has undergone rapid development over the past decades, fueled by significant research and trail-blazing technological advancements.
